CF and the City

I live in NYC.

A couple of months ago, an old friend got in touch with me for the first time in about a year and expressed that she wanted to come to the US on holiday. I said cool, I'll give you my recommendations for NYC.

Just now, she's said to me "I'm arriving on March 10th and heading to New Orleans on the 17th. Is it still okay for me to stay with you?"

Needless to say, she never even asked. I'm quite breathtaken by the cheek. Last time I saw this girl was 6 years ago, when she....invited herself to stay (different city).

I'm not down to save this girl $2,000 in hotel and convenience bills. But how should I phrase my reply? Hold me back....

Everything has changed a lot. My lovely two-bed apartment with solid herringbone wood block flooring and an uninterrupted view to the twin towers cost $240 per month with (sporadic) heating and hot water included.

I would guess you could put a Zero behind that rent now, at the least. could have, and seriously considered. buying a house in JC downtown. it was then a very dodgy, edgy neighbourhood. But a brownstone house with an octagonal library for $98000? I am still kicking my lack of courage.

I love these threads where people actually have the balls to call out the CFs rather than rolling over then being pissed off. Lots of people want to come for a free holiday in Sydney (where I live) too. It has never ended well so now it is a hard no.

I would definitely say something like ‘ummm, I can’t see any exchanges regarding accommodation? I can’t host you, but I hope you have a lovely trip!’

its so empowering calling out wankery like this, I’ve done it twice this week with two work issues and honestly it’s so satisfying purging it and not obsessing over how to word potential replies and winding yourself up in self doubt and gaslighting yourself into wondering what you’ve said or down that’s been misconstrued, fuck it just say it:

Hi xyz, we never discussed you staying with me! Its simply not an option. I did offer to give you some recommendations on places to stay and still happy to do that?

then insert something about coffee or dinner if you so desire.

I would actually have been quite worried for my friend in this situation. If she was drunk enough to lose her license and to not consider birth control was she really in a state to properly consent to sex with your best friend? Did you check with her how she felt about the incident or were you too busy thinking how 'rude' she had been?

If she's in Auckland, she's probably got other things on her mind right now
