CF and the City

I live in NYC.

A couple of months ago, an old friend got in touch with me for the first time in about a year and expressed that she wanted to come to the US on holiday. I said cool, I'll give you my recommendations for NYC.

Just now, she's said to me "I'm arriving on March 10th and heading to New Orleans on the 17th. Is it still okay for me to stay with you?"

Needless to say, she never even asked. I'm quite breathtaken by the cheek. Last time I saw this girl was 6 years ago, when she....invited herself to stay (different city).

I'm not down to save this girl $2,000 in hotel and convenience bills. But how should I phrase my reply? Hold me back....

"Aw, I wish that was an option! But as I mentioned, here are my recommendations (insert however graceful you're feeling). Let me know where you are, I'd love to come meet you! Xxx" However you choose to respond, don't apologise. There's only one cheeky busterd here and it ain't you!

Don't be too polite or regretful. Just be too the point. No you can't stay with me you ........... Enjoy the USA.

Off topic, but looking at the OPs picture of the subway, I see footprints painted on one floor tile. I wonder if this is how far back you're supposed to stand whilst waiting for the train to arrive? If so, it's massively different to the London tube where we're right close to the edge of the platform.

People in NYC stand much closer to the platform edge than that. I think that tile is placed to show where the doors will open.

Clearly, she only got in touch for free accommodation. A polite refusal is all you need. Don’t make up excuses because CFs always argue (“ You’re at wrk? That’s ok, we’ll look after ourselves”/ No room? that’s ok; we’ll crash on the floor”). Don’t even mention meeting up. Bet you never hear from her again.

My lovely friend actually moved out of her apartment in NY and went and stayed with a friend to let me and my family stay there for a weekend. Looking back on it, I can't think why I let her do that but at the time it seemed so kind and the hotels would have been expensive. We could have done it we were on a bit East coast trip.

I think people in NYC do do that alot. When DH and I got together we spent a few days there staying in a friend of his apartment.... who had also moved out to host us.

Crazy really, but so kind. Having said that you are obviously not so close with this friend. I am basically posting for the updates. Love a CF thread because I encounter them and have clearly been a CF myself in the past, more than once!!

Well, there is serious flooding in NZ, AKLD seen 75% of summer rain in 15hrs! She may be a bit busy!

But no need to offer bad recommendations. What's the point of that other than just to be nasty? Jeez.
