Is a takeaway considered a treat for you?

Which day/days do you have one?

What do you choose? Pizza, Indian, Chinese etc etc

People are saying with the price of food, it’s getting almost on par with eating out/getting a takeaway 🤷🏻‍♀️

I always love the idea of one and consider it a “treat” but then afterwards get buyers remorse that we’ve spend close to our weekly food shop on one meal that is never as good as you imagine it will be.

There’s a very good Chinese near us but because we like to share a few bits, it’s about £35 for just two of us. Even our local fish and chip shop is a good £13 each for cod and chips which feels a lot compared to a few years ago.

Comedycook · 26/01/2023 20:11

Definitely a treat. My favourite is Chinese but none of my family like it so I don't bother just for myself.

We all love an Indian takeaway but last one we got came to nearly £50 for four of us!

CaptainMyCaptain · 26/01/2023 20:13

We never have take away. I don't know why it's become such a thing.

LeopardPrintTits · 26/01/2023 20:14

Why don’t you tell us first Mr Journalist? Wink

MamaNell · 26/01/2023 20:14

@Comedycook do you think £12.50 per person is expensive? I think that's good value for a hot meal delivered to my house.
Takeaways a definitely a treat for that reason, £50 is half my weekly shop. But also as they aren't very healthy to eat often

Findyourneutralspace · 26/01/2023 20:14

I like one on a Friday. Depends who’s in to eat it. If my teens are in it’s likely pizza, if I’m home alone, Thai.

Thehop · 26/01/2023 20:15

We have a lot less now they've got so expensive. I spend less a week on a food shop and save takeaway money to eat out now and again instead.

DottyLittleRainbow · 26/01/2023 20:15

Takeaway is definitely a payday treat here. But nowhere near as cheap as making your own meal. We usually spend up to £25 on a takeaway for 4-5 of us. Few places within walking distance of us so we collect and saves any delivery fees. And we will cook our own rice to go with an Indian or a Chinese.

TheChosenTwo · 26/01/2023 20:15

We get them, sometimes once a week, Sometimes the kids will have one twice a week if dh and I are going out, sometimes we go a month without one at all.
And what we order will totally depend on what we fancy at the time, my favourite is Thai, dh would choose curry, dc might like pizza/fried chicken/ - it’s literally just a choose what you want type evening when we have a takeaway, sometimes with the 5 of us there could be 5 different deliveries!

polkadotdinosaur · 26/01/2023 20:16

Our wonderful local Chinese takeaway comes in at £18 for the two of us. If I were to make up a Chinese takeaway from scratch it would be £10+ and a lot of washing up. I’d say we probably have one 2-3 times per month.

Hbh17 · 26/01/2023 20:16

Never had one.

ImmigrantAlice · 26/01/2023 20:16

We have it less than once a week, but that’s down to calorie intake rather than cost.

Arewejustalwayscoldnowthen · 26/01/2023 20:17

@Comedycook My favourite Indian food is £40 for three of us, well dd is only 4 so barely wants any, so it’s really just for two of us, but it’s so good, just so much 😫

We never have take away. I don't know why it's become such a thing.

It's not new - we got chippy, Indian or Chinese when I was growing up in the 70s / early 80s.

It's either a treat or a 'really can't be arsed' cooking after a long, busy and tiring day.

My first choice would be Chinese because there's more on the menu I like. Indian second, Greek third then a rotation around burgers, pizza, fried chicken, chippy and chicken kebabs.

Reluctantadult · 26/01/2023 20:19

We have a takeaway less than once a month. Fish and chips most often, because its cheapest and the kids like it. I like curry or Chinese. Probably get one of those maybe three times a year. Probably eat out at wetherspoons a few times a year for less. We go to cafes for coffee and cake maybe once a month.

Arewejustalwayscoldnowthen · 26/01/2023 20:19

@LeopardPrintTits Eh? No, just a bored 45 year old looking forward to a possible treat takeaway (is a real treat for us) and watching Happy valley this weekend.

Would this be an interesting enough topic for a journalist 🙈😅

I know they have been available for a long time but it seems quite recent thing to have them so often. Each to their own but I'd rather cook my own and always have done.

Arewejustalwayscoldnowthen · 26/01/2023 20:21

Where we are, a huge pizza is the cheapest takeaway, it’s nice, but sometimes I fancy just a proper meal, but like others have said, it’s often half the weeks shopping budget and feels excessive

IDontCareMatthew · 26/01/2023 20:23

The prices of takeaways here have gone up with the new menus 'for 2023'

Funny that! So nope.

dudsville · 26/01/2023 20:23

We're "lucky" in that our local offers aren't any good, so we've taken to buying Tailor Spice curry sauces, that with roasted mixed veg is not only so much cheaper but healthy too. Haven't yet found equally tasty chinese sauces. As for pizzas we like sainsbury's ttd, also comes in at fewer calories than pizza shop pizza.

Galadriel90 · 26/01/2023 20:23

Indian or thai. Once a week. I love it. Cook from scratch the rest of the week.

CPHB2021 · 26/01/2023 20:24

Generally once a week. If just DH and me, Thai, Indian, Kebab ( it's nice meat and salad ) DC love a dominos and I would say we get one at least twice a month.
We both work full time and though a treat, it's more laziness! 🙈 some nights I just really cannot be bothered to cook!

GiltEdges · 26/01/2023 20:25

We tend to get one every 1-2 weeks, normally on a Friday or Saturday night. It’s a treat purely in the sense that we’re not having to cook, so it’s more enjoyable being able to relax etc. Don’t really consider the financial aspect, as it’s something we’ve always done. Our Mindful Chef boxes work out at around £15/meal anyway so not vastly different to a takeaway if DH and I share.

Yes as I can get a meal at my local pub for that including a drink or so.

SuffolkUnicorn · 26/01/2023 20:26

I never buy them
