To wonder why they can’t make a Covid vaccine that actually fucking works?

Everyone I’ve known who’s had it/got it has been vaccinated and/or boosted.

There’s been two years in which to create a vaccine that actually works rather than just reduces symptoms, in some cases…

Well, there’s no cure for the common cold so I think the vaccine is pretty good. It’s allowed us to get back to normal. YABU.

Set out your criteria for "works".
It looks like you don't know what vaccines are supposed to do.

mynameiscalypso · 23/01/2023 17:48

I imagine there's much less incentive/pressure/resources being thrown at it now (probably rightly)

Orangebadger · 23/01/2023 17:49

Unlikely with a coronavirus. It's reduced mortality from covid which is massive and reduced morbidity to a point. Unfortunately not so much with long covid.

Rebel2023 · 23/01/2023 17:49

I was still amazed how shit I felt. That was with 6 vaccines. Felt better after anti virals but then was still off work for 16 days
Not dead though so...

antipodeancanary · 23/01/2023 17:49

It's super annoying isn't it op? I reckon you should write to someone and complain. Or maybe you could could mix up a few bits in your kitchen and send that off to the government, see if it works any better.

ThreeLittleDots · 23/01/2023 17:49

You don't know how vaccines work.

MademoiselleTrunchbull · 23/01/2023 17:49

People still get colds and they've had decades to create a vaccine that works. 🤷‍♀️ Guess they all need sacked innit.

Emmamoo89 · 23/01/2023 17:50

Yabu

Abraxan · 23/01/2023 17:50

They probably won't.

Its like the flu vaccine. You can still catch it and the flu vaccine's effectiveness varies each year as they change it to match what they believe will be the main strain in the coming months. It's often only 45-60% effective.

However, these vaccines, whilst not preventing you from catching the virus, do work well in reducing the seriousness of the symptoms. This is especially important with more vulnerable people.

I agree. I think the progress they've made has been far better than I expected at the beginning of the pandemic.

Tinkerbyebye · 23/01/2023 17:50

There’s no vaccine to stop flu, the jab helps but each year they have to guess what might happen, and even vaccinated you still can catch flu

Marigoldandivy · 23/01/2023 17:50

The vaccines do work. They reduce the impact of the symptoms and have prevented countless deaths.

FannyFifer · 23/01/2023 17:51

Ah c'mon, are you in the windup? It doesn't stop you getting it, but it will hopefully stop you dying from it though.

Shesasuperfreak · 23/01/2023 17:51

If that's how all vaccines worked, there wouldn't be such a thing as herd immunity and anti vaxxers wouldn't be called selfish.

SpaceMonitor · 23/01/2023 17:52

Did you fail GCSE biology OP?

Slowingdownagain · 23/01/2023 17:52

It does work. It's vastly reduced death and serious illness. What did you expect from it?

MarshaMelrose · 23/01/2023 17:52

Are you alive? It's working.

IamThegreaterMole · 23/01/2023 17:53

No one will mind you having a go, if you think you can do it better!

butterfliedtwo · 23/01/2023 17:53

Also, along with what everyone is saying already, the virus is mutating. From what I've read, scientists are working to adapt the vaccine.

It was never meant to stop us getting covid. I had an awful case of it last year, but I'm pretty glad I had the vaccine. I'm sure, personally, that it prevented hospitalisation.

Absolutely this!

GenuinelyDone · 23/01/2023 17:53

I know plenty of people who've had the vaccine and not covid - me included. I'm inclined to lean toward the vaccine working from my small sample and those that caught it were almost asymptomatic.

On the flip side I knew 4 people who died of covid prior to the vaccinations starting.

Hbh17 · 23/01/2023 17:53

It does work. It has reduced Covid to a minor illness for millions of people.

If you've had 6 vaccines - I'm assuming 3 main jabs and 3 boosters - then you must be in the highly vulnerable group, meaning your immune system must struggle regardless. Therefore, the effectiveness of the vaccine may be even less effective than for your average person. It doesn't surprise me then that you were still badly affected.

Were you not eligible for the antivirals? I found that the antiviral infusion worked pretty fast once I'd had it.

Have you had an antibody test to see if you are getting any from the vaccines themselves?
