I’m just blown away by her acting, why hasn’t she got more recognition?
Addicted to Happy valley, the writing and acting is superb

And Lesley Manville is another great.

Love her.

Especially in "Mum"

The casting of SL and SF as sisters in Happy Valley is brilliant. You can really believe they could be sisters.

Just an aside about the boy who plays Ryan, I think it's inspired to wait for him to grow up to play the same part. I couldn't believe it was him. Still hasn't got total control of his face though, bless him 😁

MarshaBradyo · 18/01/2023 18:48

I much prefer Ryan as the older one.

We only just watched all series so it was amazing to see him grow up.

SL looks exactly the same though, hardly any aging

I also thought they could be sisters to the extent my mind felt funny like I had thought they were the same actress - I’ve not watched much with them in it

Carpediem15 · 18/01/2023 19:03

James Norton on 1 Show - 7pm.

Murdoch1949 · 18/01/2023 21:55

All of Last Tango is on iPlayer, as is Happy Valley. Ms Lancashire is universally recognised as a brilliant actor, has won awards and will continue to be celebrated.

TangoBrava · 18/01/2023 21:58

On the whole "is this believable", can a character behave in this way? In the same area as Happy Valley is set, a groom murdered his new bride and put her body in a suitcase. Nobody at that wedding presumably thought he could do that.

www.itv.com/news/calendar/2022-08-19/moment-groom-dragged-new-brides-body-out-of-house-in-suitcase

People do utterly unimaginable acts. There have been bodies found in the reservoir like in episode one.

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/laurence-winstanley-murder-oldham-reservoir-15219188.amp

There was also a dead body dumped on the street fairly recently from a gang related incident:

www.examinerlive.co.uk/news/west-yorkshire-news/police-called-mans-body-found-20596444

There is nothing in the series that isn't in real life, and not just in that particular geographical area either (I've read how pissed off some Calder valley locals are about how their area is portrayed and point out that it's not unique to this area!)

I love her. I'd watch her in anything.

MarshaBradyo · 20/01/2023 09:47

After recommendations on here we’re watching Last Tango in Halifax

So good too. She’s utterly brilliant as the headteacher of the private school

Love her mum too and the story is nice

Us too! Although dh has already lost interest after episode 4

I thought Last Tango was a bit of a snooze.

Same.

Mare of Easttown with Kate Winslet is the nearest thing to happy valley. Almost a US copy really. It’s really good.

MarshaBradyo · 20/01/2023 11:29

I couldn’t get on with the Kate Winslet one and stopped watching

We’re only a couple in to Halifax so will see. I don’t mind gentler some of it is sharply observed

I'm intrigued to watch that one to see exactly how 'inspired' the writers were by Happy Valley.

There are a LOT of similarities- I was going to list them all but then I realised I’d be spoiling it if anyone does decide to watch it. But yes it’s really similar! I enjoyed it.

midsomermurderess · 20/01/2023 11:55

Lots of similarities with Mare but that really lacked humour. It was dreadfully, unrelentingly po faced.

Yes and also the victim remained a victim unlike HV1

And I haven't had one of those for over 40 years Blush

Where will I find this obviously inferior, but it will do, I suppose programme?

KimberleyClark · 20/01/2023 17:03

She does a fair Welsh accent as well, as evidenced by The Accident (Netflix). I think she must have listened carefully.

She will be a Dame before long I’m sure.

Oddly enough Anne Reid started inCoronation Street too as the first Mrs Ken Barlow. Ooh I'm going back a bit now.....

I'll show my age too, the dodgy hairdrier, wonder if it was Ken's DIY skills?

Now Tv. I think it’s probably available to buy via Prime maybe. Not sure!

Emotionalsupportviper · 20/01/2023 20:37

Cheers, Xrays - I'll have a search.

www.hellomagazine.com/brides/20230127162868/happy-valley-sarah-lancashire-horrifying-reason-first-marriage-gary/

I found this interview with SL this morning. She says some bizarre things. I do believe Peter Salmon cheated with her, too. From 2000:

"ITV'S highest-paid actress Sarah Lancashire has fallen in love with BBC boss Peter Salmon - a father-of-three who has now left his family.
The couple have had a lengthy secret affair and are said to be "deeply in love".
Last night news of the romance stunned the TV world, where BBC1 controller Salmon, 44, is known as a devoted family man.
Lancashire - who shot to fame as Coronation Street barmaid Raquel Wolstenhulme and won a National TV Award on Tuesday for ITV's Seeing Red - is a 36-year-old divorcee who lives with her two sons in Cheshire.
She signed a pounds 1.3million "golden handcuffs" deal to work exclusively for ITV three months ago.
Salmon, who takes over as BBC director of sport next month, shared a Victorian house in Oxford with wife Penny Watt and their three sons aged five to 15.
He is now renting a flat near his old house. He and Lancashire have not set up home together.
Friends stressed that Salmon's children were of "paramount importance".
One said: "Moving out and away from his children - even thought it is only a matter of yards - has been an incredibly hard thing for Peter to do.
"He adores them and is fiercely proud of all three of them. It has been an agonising decision but he and Sarah didn't want to live a lie."

TheKeatingFive · 30/01/2023 14:37

She's incredible and right up there for me.

Narrowly pipped by Keeley Hawks and Jodie Comer in the 'best British actress' stakes.
