I’m just blown away by her acting, why hasn’t she got more recognition?
Addicted to Happy valley, the writing and acting is superb

And that's real cafe in Bolton, not Leeds! I got quite excited when I saw Bridge Street and the old back entrance to the Woolworths of my youth!
She is an exceptional actress, capable of such a wide range of roles. It's interesting how many of the women who started off in Coronation Street have gone on to do very well, Suranne Jones and Angela Griffiths spring to mind whereas the men who left tended to sink without trace.

They shot the school scenes in Last Tango in my old school ( well, part of it, not the bit I actually attended) !

Not my cup of tea. Won’t watch her in anything.

I feel that way about Suranne Jones. Her ott acting in Gentleman Jack was so irritating.

Lottapianos · 18/01/2023 11:41

'Watch Julia. It's an American show about US cookery legend Julia Child. She's fabulous in it'

Beyond fabulous. Couldnt be more different to Happy Valley

Agree that she's just wonderful. I remember her as Raquel in Corrie many years ago and she was so brilliant, and the character was so sweet 😊

Siobhan Finneran is just as brilliant. Last saw her in 'Alma's Not Normal'. WOW. Would watch absolutely anything that she's in

viques · 18/01/2023 11:21

Your loss. Mind you I do have sympathy, I too get irrational blocks about actors. I refused to watch anything with Sean Penn in for ages on the spurious grounds that anyone who married Madonna was bound to be an idiot. Sorry Sean. I still find it hard to watch young Tom Hanks in early roles but love him as an actor now.

I have an irrational block about Olivia Coleman. On the grounds that her West Country accent sounds just that bit to me as though she’s taking the piss. Yup, I know not watching Broadchurch is my loss but there we go.

Anoisagusaris · 18/01/2023 11:42

Siobhan Finneran is also brilliant in Alma’s Not Normal. It’s such a funny series but also very sad.

According to some that 10 minute scene in the cafe with her sister was the best ever in British drama. I have to agree.

I saw a great Tweet saying something about how the Lord of The Rings spin off drama was around 38 million an episode but all you need is a cafe, two mobile phones and two phenomenal actresses.

Absolutely. That scene gave me goosebumps. Just amazing.

SleeplessInEngland · 18/01/2023 10:37

What's your aibu?

Oh boy. What about "AIBU to think that Sarah Lancashire should have more recognition?" - would that wording have satisfied you, sleepless?

Then, you can come on and say whatever you like... for instance "actually I feel that she does already have the recognition she deserves..." or whatever you wish to say. Or, you can say to yourself "I don't really have an opinion", and move on to another thread.

Comefromaway · 18/01/2023 11:44

Back in the day I was convinced that when she left Coronation Street she would fine it hard not to be typecast as another Raquel character. How wrong was I?

She is also a fantastic stage and musical actress. I thought she was fantastic in the recent film of Everybody's Talking About Jamie (especially since Josie Walker who played the mum on stage was a lot to live up to)

RobertsRadio · 18/01/2023 11:45

"It's interesting how many of the women who started off in Coronation Street have gone on to do very well, Suranne Jones and Angela Griffiths spring to mind whereas the men who left tended to sink without trace."

I agree, also Katherine Kelly. I did a little whoop when I saw her in series 2 of Happy Valley and thought haven't our Raquel and Becky done well for themselves.😄

AbsoluteYawns · 18/01/2023 11:46

She is outstanding.
Agree with a PP that Siobhan Finneran is also an amazingly talented actor.

SleeplessInEngland · 18/01/2023 11:46

She'a about as accalaimed as a british tv actor can be right now.

YABU.

Xrays · 18/01/2023 11:47

I really want to like Olivia Coleman and Sheridan Smith but something about them both puts me off. I don’t even know why. I struggle to watch anything with them in it. I feel like I can just see them, not the characters they play. Whereas with SL I feel wholly invested in the story.

CrossPurposes · 18/01/2023 11:49

Coxspurplepippin · 18/01/2023 10:51

Absolutely. Did you see her in the darama about Julia Child? Couldn't be a more different role than Happy Valley. She really is a stonking actress. We enjoyed Rose and Maloney but it never seems to be repeated. Incidentally with another underrated actor, Phil Davis.

Rose and Maloney is on Prime and STV Player.

MissBattleaxe · 18/01/2023 10:42

I think she's better than Olivia Colman. Colman is good, but you still know it's Olivia Colman, in the same way that you always know it's Helena Bonham Carter, no matter who she plays.

Whereas with Sarah Lancashire you completely forget it's her and not a Yorkshire police sergeant called Catherine. She is a chameleon.

This is why Colman isn't that great imo, she's always Olivia Colman playing a part.

Good and great actors like Lancashire are those who embody the part so you 100% believe this is Catherine Cawood being filmed. Same with most of the other actors in Happy Valley.

newnamethanks · 18/01/2023 11:50

Just seen the D Mail has a pic of her out with husband. Agree with all praise but I love her more because she looks like a real person, ageing naturally. I like that, so rare in tv land.

SuperSange · 18/01/2023 11:50

I think she's fantastic. Does anyone have a link to the cafe scene please? I can find lots of articles, but not one with the scene.

Bahhhhhumbug · 18/01/2023 11:50

Oh l agree ,we're loving Happy Valley, brilliant acting ,by not just her ,who can imagine Tommy Lee character as that vicar for example, he just oozes evil in this part. But yes Sarah Lancashire has got that dry humour and world weary cynicism of a police officer off to a T. I loved the bit where she rattled off her life with all its problems to someone she was arresting in a ' you think youve got problems' way l thinks its in the trailer, brilliant.

Sarah Lancashire and Siobhan Finneran are amazing in HV. But Olivia Coleman is brilliant too. She has amazing range. From the slightly dippy HR woman in Green Wing, where she stole every scene she was in, to the abused wife in Tyrannosaur, to the broken hearted detective in Broadchurch, to the passive aggressive woman you want to punch on the nose in Fleabag, she brings something else to the writing that makes it so believable. As do the other two actresses.

It's such a skill to be believable. Very few people can do it so well that you don't think about the fact they're acting.

It's on iPlayer and occurs at the beginning of episode 3 of series 3.

waterlego · 18/01/2023 11:52

She’s phenomenal. I also really like Siobhan Finneran, Olivia Colman and Sheridan Smith. They’re the best of British female acting talent IMO, but I think Lancashire has an edge over the others. As PPs have said, she is just so believable as Cawood.

Goldpaw · 18/01/2023 11:53

Xrays · 18/01/2023 11:47

Olivia Colman is terrible in some of the parts she plays, such as the Queen in The Crown. Totally miscast. I really liked her in The Night Manager, I felt she played a good part in that and it's the only thing I've seen her in where I haven't thought it's just Olivia Colman playing a part. Angela Burr seemed like a real person.

But overall I think she's incredibly overrated, despite the awards, and that Sarah Lancashire is vastly underrated in comparison.

TheWernethWife · 18/01/2023 11:55

Sarah Lancashire should be made a Dame, along with the wonderful Maxine Peake.

It is right at the start of this weeks episode. Should be on iPlayer or another streaming service.

MarshaBradyo · 18/01/2023 11:56

I agree with pp you forget her and just get an amazing part

OC was incredible in early films but lately she feels on autopilot eg The Crown. Although a few good lines and maybe not that easy a part

I hope SL sweeps the boards with awards, she deserves them

I can’t take to Nicola Walker though at all, another mention in pp

MarshaBradyo · 18/01/2023 11:57

The cafe scene was amazing but also the school scene woth the teacher and Ryan
