I’m just blown away by her acting, why hasn’t she got more recognition?
Addicted to Happy valley, the writing and acting is superb

Amazing actress

Tamarindtree · 18/01/2023 11:59

She is first and foremost an actress, not a celebrity.

Hollywood is about celebrity not acting which is why you think she is not widely recognised.

OhMonDieux · 18/01/2023 12:01

why didn't you post this in Chat or Telly Addicts @Thewinterofillness
what are you being unreasonable about?

Oh yes, let me think.....

Has AIBU become the new place for any topic where a poster wants a lot of replies?

For that reason, you are very ureasonable.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 18/01/2023 12:02

I love Nicola Walker. Binge watched Unforgotten last autumn.

Anne Reid, who's in Last Tango in Halifax with NW and SL gets on my wick though. I thought that show should have been a 'one and done' actually.

Kazzyhoward · 18/01/2023 10:55

She's had plenty of recognition as mentioned by others.

What I like about her (and probably why people don't know more about her) is that she's not always in the media, not all over Twitter, etc., and by & large keeps herself to herself with no scandal, no attention seeking appearances in reality TV shows or daytime TV etc.

Yes I don't think I've seen Sarah doing any press at all about Happy Valley, unless I've missed it. If she went on something like Jonathan Ross the ratings would ho through the roof as she's so loved and respected. Talk shows must be banging on her door constantly.

But to be fair, Happy Valley really doesn't need the actors to do every TV talk show too drum up business, it promotes itself by being an amazing drama and then through word of mouth. I've got quite a few people watching the first two series by banging on about it all the time.

I have huge respect for Sarah for being such a private person.

BatshitBanshee · 18/01/2023 12:04

One of my favourite actresses of all time. Happy Valley, Last Tango - Can't wait to watch Julia. My favourite is when she gets into full flow, almost like a monologue, during a scene as Catherine Cawood and it's all a little bit monotone with subtle inflections so you really have to pay attention to realise she's found a very clever way of telling someone they're wrong like that scene with the principal and Hepworth in the second episode this season. Chills.

LizzieSiddal · 18/01/2023 12:06

I just absolutely love her to bits.

According to some that 10 minute scene in the cafe with her sister was the best ever in British drama. I have to agree.

It was a masterclass in understated acting, @TarasHarp55 - though my favourite scene from the current series so far was her talking to her sister about yoga and farting, and how a yoga session at the local nick had released so much gas that it caused floods in Hebden Bridge.

I am very sad that this is the last series of Happy Valley (unless Sarah can be persuaded to do another one, fingers crossed), but I'm sure she'll be in plenty more dramas that will be just as good.

I might have to binge-watch DCI Banks and Shetland to get my fix of gritty crime drama once HV finishes.

Carpediem15 · 18/01/2023 12:08

Lisa Farrand was a West Yorkshire police woman who coached Sarah for Happy Valley and was on TV the other day talking about it, interesting chat.

Sarah Lancashire should be made a Dame, along with the wonderful Maxine Peake.

I will be disappointed in Maxine Peake's hypocrisy if she ever accepts a damehood since she is a socialist. But I can definitely see Dame Sarah in the future.

midsomermurderess · 18/01/2023 12:12

‘I am very sad that this is the last series of Happy Valley (unless Sarah can be persuaded to do another one, fingers crossed)’. SW has decided it should end with series 3: ‘We made a definite decision that this was going to be the final season,". "Just because it’s been successful, we weren’t going to let it drift on until it became a pale shadow of itself."

ChatSamosa · 18/01/2023 12:13

Have you seen her in 'Julia'? Sublime.

MadameOvary81 · 18/01/2023 12:14

I'm still lusting after her in Last Tango in Halifax. I hope Sally Wainwright starts on a new series of that, now that Happy Valley is in the can. She and Nicola Walker are sublime!

midsomermurderess · 18/01/2023 12:14

That was from here: www.radiotimes.com/tv/drama/happy-valley-sally-wainwright-big-rt-interview/

Aprilx · 18/01/2023 12:16

Yes she gets lots of recognition. I am intrigued to watch this cafe scene, but I am not going to watch this series as I found the previous Happy Valley storylines hard to watch (as in disturbing, not that I could not appreciate the quality of acting and screenwriting).

Maytodecember · 18/01/2023 12:20

Siobhan Finneran seems to be able to play any role, too, and always completely believable.

LionsandLambs · 18/01/2023 12:21

She’s marvellous, very understated. She just IS the character, every time.

Stephen Graham is the male equivalent, a wonderful actor.

I know what people mean about Coleman, Dench etc. it’s always them, playing at acting.

Twinsmummy1812 · 18/01/2023 12:23

I have a huge pretty serious girl crush on her. Honestly I think she’s wonderful.

BeatrixPottery · 18/01/2023 12:30

@MissBattleaxe YES! The other two for me aren't actors in the same way, they're personalities, Sarah is an actual actor. All good in their own way, Olivia and Helen financially for the producers/studios as well as to audiences - because they have a pull base on them being schlebs alone which puts bums on seats and makes them good at the pre-promotion. But Sarah is another class on screen.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/01/2023 12:35

Hello Sarah.

Lottapianos · 18/01/2023 11:41

'Watch Julia. It's an American show about US cookery legend Julia Child. She's fabulous in it'

Beyond fabulous. Couldnt be more different to Happy Valley

Agree that she's just wonderful. I remember her as Raquel in Corrie many years ago and she was so brilliant, and the character was so sweet 😊

Siobhan Finneran is just as brilliant. Last saw her in 'Alma's Not Normal'. WOW. Would watch absolutely anything that she's in

She was fantastic in that. I wish they'd do more.

Baldrickhasaplan · 18/01/2023 12:37

I still remember her as Raquel in her last Corrie appearance. She was leaving and acted the guy playing Curly off the screen. She’s always brilliant.

Iamwhatiam52 · 18/01/2023 12:37

MissBattleaxe · 18/01/2023 10:42

I think she's better than Olivia Colman. Colman is good, but you still know it's Olivia Colman, in the same way that you always know it's Helena Bonham Carter, no matter who she plays.

Whereas with Sarah Lancashire you completely forget it's her and not a Yorkshire police sergeant called Catherine. She is a chameleon.

Yes! this!! I love her.

PAFMO · 18/01/2023 12:39

If anyone is too young (unlike me!) to remember, find the episode of Coronation St where Raquel discovers Slimy Des is shagging Tanya.
It was either 1993 or 1994 and SL's acting in that scene was raw and harrowing, and what we've all done at times. That was when everyone watching I think knew she wasn't going to be a long forgotten ditzy barmaid for long. It was superb.

PAFMO · 18/01/2023 12:40

Agree also with MissB about Olivia Colman. I thought she was ok in Broadchurch but her Queen was about as weird as Gillian Anderson's MrsT and I stopped watching at that point. Felt like I was watching a mediocre school play.
