I’m just blown away by her acting, why hasn’t she got more recognition?
Addicted to Happy valley, the writing and acting is superb

Me too, she’s brilliant

Writing is good too

Tlolljs · 18/01/2023 11:01

Think it was Mark Billingham who said Ruth Rendell can make a scene between two women in a cafe more violent than one with two guys with baseball bats.
This is exactly what this scene reminded me of.
Excellent acting, excellent writing.

mondaytosunday · 18/01/2023 11:02

She is probably getting the recognition she wants, rather than the fame that can make life a nightmare.
She is well respected actress, has plenty of good roles and is very successful. What else would she need or want?

DesertIslandCondiment · 18/01/2023 11:09

The other day I saw an part of an old episode of Coronation Street when Ken was teaching Raquel to speak French, it was so funny.

I need to watch Happy Valley, I know I'm missing out.

Thewinterofillness · 18/01/2023 11:11

Just reading up on her, apparently she had a 14 month breakdown when acting as Raquel in Coronation street (remember watching as a kid, she was fantastic even then)
It also states that she does shy away from all the extra attention that comes with it all-I think I’d be the same, she likely just wants to do her job to the best of her ability, without all the intrusion into her personal life, that often comes with the job

From Raquel Wolstenhulme to Catherine Cawood she has been brilliant in all the roles I have seen her in. Last tango in Halifax is another of my favourite shows, I do hope they make another series of that.

Pasithean · 18/01/2023 11:12

Not my cup of tea. Won’t watch her in anything.

girlfriend44 · 18/01/2023 11:14

Last Tango in Halifax she was brilliant.
Her and Sheridan Smith very lucky ladies.

Hydrangeatea · 18/01/2023 11:16

I have just rewatched Last Tango in Halifax and she's amazing in that too, love her!

FallonofDynasty · 18/01/2023 11:16

She is very good as is writer Sally Wainwright

Why is this an AIBU? Also she has loads of credit.

Oh FFS does it really matter whether it's an AIBU or not - just move along if you don't like it.

Some people will really pick at anything

BumpyaDaisyevna · 18/01/2023 11:18

That scene between Catherine and Clare in the cafe was incredible. I couldnt even tell you why but I think it is because the characters are just so very real. TBF I think Sally Wainwright's incredible writing plays a big part, but the way the two actresses capture the very long relationship between them, love, rage, all the things they have been through together, is something else.

Shunkleisshiny · 18/01/2023 11:19

Sarah Lancashire smashed it as American icon Julia Childs, she is amazing!

MmeDefrag · 18/01/2023 11:19

I just have to think of her in certain scenes in Last Tango to raise a smile.

I think she and Nicola Walker are my favourite actresses.

Your loss. Mind you I do have sympathy, I too get irrational blocks about actors. I refused to watch anything with Sean Penn in for ages on the spurious grounds that anyone who married Madonna was bound to be an idiot. Sorry Sean. I still find it hard to watch young Tom Hanks in early roles but love him as an actor now.

Whydidimarryhim · 18/01/2023 11:21

The cafe is in Bolton 😁great actress - great writing - real British Drama that we need more of. Love everything she has been in.

It’s like when people call something a hidden gem, when what they mean is they have only just come across it.

Exactly.

BrioNotBiro · 18/01/2023 11:28

I remember a touching two-hander between Raquel and Curley when she came back as a sophisticated frenchified ex-pat who was pregnant and needed a quickie divorce before her child was born.

Even then there was a glimpse that she was capable of a lot more than playing a sweet airhead.

StroppyTop · 18/01/2023 11:28

@Whydidimarryhim Thank you! It had been bugging me because it definitely wasn’t Sheffield

According to some that 10 minute scene in the cafe with her sister was the best ever in British drama. I have to agree.

And that's real cafe in Bolton, not Leeds! I got quite excited when I saw Bridge Street and the old back entrance to the Woolworths of my youth!
She is an exceptional actress, capable of such a wide range of roles. It's interesting how many of the women who started off in Coronation Street have gone on to do very well, Suranne Jones and Angela Griffiths spring to mind whereas the men who left tended to sink without trace.

PollyAmour · 18/01/2023 11:33

She has always been an astonishingly talented actor and never seems to be out of work. Some people obviously think she jumped from Coronation Street into serious acting without anything happening in between. Grin

HRTQueen · 18/01/2023 11:34

PAFMO · 18/01/2023 10:39

I think she's universally recognised as one of Britain's best actresses tbf.

I agree

she isn’t what I would call a celebrity she isn’t promoting herself or selling products

QueenSmartypants · 18/01/2023 11:34

MissBattleaxe · 18/01/2023 10:42

I think she's better than Olivia Colman. Colman is good, but you still know it's Olivia Colman, in the same way that you always know it's Helena Bonham Carter, no matter who she plays.

Whereas with Sarah Lancashire you completely forget it's her and not a Yorkshire police sergeant called Catherine. She is a chameleon.

Olivia colman is great but a lot of the praise for her seems to come from how easily she cries.

I need to watch Happy Valley, I know I'm missing out.

That was back in the day when Coronation Street was believeable and watchable, many of her scenes as Raquel were so funny and often very poignant!
