I’m just blown away by her acting, why hasn’t she got more recognition?
Addicted to Happy valley, the writing and acting is superb

You are not unreasonable for being blown away by her acting, because she is an amazing actor.

You are being unreasonable suggesting she hasn't had enough recognition. She is surely recognised by most people as one of our finest acting talents.

Herroyal · 18/01/2023 12:45

Bloody love her, but she has deservedly won tons of awards and get huge praise for anything she does these days!

TrentCrimm · 18/01/2023 12:45

She also seems very lovely- I've never seen anyone approach her (and I haven't either!) but I've seen her around Hebden and Sowerby Bridge, both filming and off set. She wafts around in floaty clothes and smiles at everyone.

They shot the school scenes in Last Tango in my old school ( well, part of it, not the bit I actually attended) !

An Old Girl of Bolton School then! Amazing how often it crops up in dramas, they must be making a fortune, it was a miltary barracks in one thing, I recognised it from the beautiful staircase. I'm not an Old Girl but my daughter is.

"It's interesting how many of the women who started off in Coronation Street have gone on to do very well, Suranne Jones and Angela Griffiths spring to mind whereas the men who left tended to sink without trace."

I agree, also Katherine Kelly. I did a little whoop when I saw her in series 2 of Happy Valley and thought haven't our Raquel and Becky done well for themselves.😄

That's the name I couldn't remember, she was fantastic in Mr Selfridge, such a change from her Becky days! I must have missed series 2 of Happy Valley so that's one to catch up on.

WhichPage · 18/01/2023 12:49

Just watching her with a welsh accent in The Accident on More4

According to some that 10 minute scene in the cafe with her sister was the best ever in British drama. I have to agree.

It certainly was.

Watch Julia. It's an American show about US cookery legend Julia Child. She's fabulous in it. It's been a big hit in the states and there's a second series. I think she's heading to character actress super stardom.

Where is this available to watch?

Emotionalsupportviper · 18/01/2023 13:07

Throwncrumbs · 18/01/2023 10:42

She’s a really good actress, but she not one of those in your face look at me types who are always in the news coming out of places like awards ceremonies, etc, where you get a free ticket to attend, get drunk and tell everyone what designer clothes she’s wearing. Which makes her even more likeable imo.

This.

She just gets on with doing a superb acting job, not particularly drawing attention to herself as a "sleb", keeping her personal and family life private, and not drawing attention to herself for the sake of it.

And all the better for it.

luckylavender · 18/01/2023 13:08

@Cigarettesaftersex1 - I'm hardly the only one that this irritates. Hey ho.

That's a good point - I hadn't thought of it but you're right. Corrie has produced some fabulous women - not so much men.

I can't say I was surprised when Reg Holdsworth disappeared over the horizon.

Thewinterofillness · 18/01/2023 13:24

@OhMonDieux 😂Why bother posting that, go onto another thread, it’s ok.
My aibu was really that I felt she didn’t get enough recognition for the fantastic actress she is.
I now see that she does, but that it’s due to her low profile that we don’t hear of her so often.

Ok?

Pinotpleasure · 18/01/2023 13:24

@Hobbesmanc - I’ve just Googled ‘Julia’ and it’s on Amazon Prime video.

It’s not free, even for Prime Members; High Definition is 2.49 per episode (SD is 1.89)

The series costs 14.99 in both HD and SD formats.

I might watch it. (I will also google Sky as we have some of their channels)

newnamethanks · 18/01/2023 13:25

And not one of these fantastic female actors went to Eton whereas male roles are increasingly snapped up by the already privileged. I was beginning to think public school was a necessity for potential actors buy maybe not.

Thewinterofillness · 18/01/2023 13:25

Any idea where I can now watch Last tango in Halifax?

OP posts:
Motelschmotel · 18/01/2023 13:25

She's amazing. There are some absolutely world class British actresses of her age. Cate Blanchett, if she were British, would be right there amongst them. There is so much richness and complexity that this generation of actresses is bringing to our screens.

Emotionalsupportviper · 18/01/2023 13:27

midsomermurderess · 18/01/2023 12:12

‘I am very sad that this is the last series of Happy Valley (unless Sarah can be persuaded to do another one, fingers crossed)’. SW has decided it should end with series 3: ‘We made a definite decision that this was going to be the final season,". "Just because it’s been successful, we weren’t going to let it drift on until it became a pale shadow of itself."

Very wise.

Writing and acting of this quality is precious because it is so rare.

Far too many excellent programmes continue too long, long after ideas have run out and the characters have nowhere to go. Leave on a high - always.

<Even though it breaks my cold, hard heart to lose them . . . >

I'll be the first in the queue when the box set comes out.

It's a BBC show so I'd imagine it's on the iplayer.

newnamethanks · 18/01/2023 13:29

Last Tango is/was on iplayer.

Pinotpleasure · 18/01/2023 13:29

@Hobbesmanc - ‘Julia’ starring Sarah Lancashire is also available for streaming on NOW TV (which I think is a division of Sky Atlantic?)

MadameOvary81 · 18/01/2023 13:29

Last tango is on BBC Iplayer, OP.

I found it boring, personally. Of course I didn't want a slanging match or a screaming showdown, but I was 'meh' about it.

Lannielou · 18/01/2023 13:33

I had to binge watch series 1 and 2, so I was ready for series 3. Sarah Lancashire is outstanding

Chocolateyshakes · 18/01/2023 13:37

MissBattleaxe · 18/01/2023 10:42

I think she's better than Olivia Colman. Colman is good, but you still know it's Olivia Colman, in the same way that you always know it's Helena Bonham Carter, no matter who she plays.

Whereas with Sarah Lancashire you completely forget it's her and not a Yorkshire police sergeant called Catherine. She is a chameleon.

100% agree.
