Every time I watch Happy Valley, I want to live there.
I live abroad, but am originally from the North west, no idea why I never visited Yorkshire 🤷🏻‍♀️
Is it as lovely as it looks, people who live there/have visited?

Piece Hall. Originally the market place for pieces of cloth. Not an aspiration for world harmony.

Something good has come out of it though. Its now a thriving hive of independent retailers and a fantastic live music venue.
Huddersfield, Halifax and Bradford were full of woolen mills, it was the main employment in these areas in the 17 and 1800's. It was the central trading post for this and like it or not, it's part of our history.

This is North Yorkshire. Well you clearly haven't been to them all!

Know what's missing in the Shambles pictures. The queue for the ghost shop and the Harry Potter shops.

A lot of Yorkshire towns/city's are rundown and have problems with anti social behaviour/crime. The little villages in the middle of green land are beautiful (except the ones that have built massive roads now in the middle of them) but you can't get a house in them for love nor money!!

Again - rundown you say? I live here and I can assure there's plenty of housing and nowhere run down or grim Confused

Some Yorkshire folk get a bit upset if there is a hint of Derbyshire in them.

My husband is from Yorkshire. My cousins and aunt all also relocated to Harrogate at various points. There is some beautiful scenery but I don't think I have ever met so many small-minded bigots in my life as various people I have come across in my 25 years plus of various visits and stays. And God help you if you've got anything approaching a southern accent 😂The scenery can't make up for a generally supercilious attitude that seems to exist wherever we go in good old Yorkieshire! My husband definitely got out as soon as he could at 18...

Obviously this is personal experience and not indicative of all people that live there in the slightest. I am from south-east London which is roundly derided on here regularly for being dirty, unfriendly and downright dangerous but that's not my experience or perception at all. Different strokes for different folks I guess!

Well I was born & raised in Harrogate and neither myself nor anyone I know is bigoted or small minded Hmm Biscuit

LordSugarTits · 15/01/2023 12:34

Rochdale?! 😱

Wash yer mouth out lass

I can show you rundown parts of Yorkshire. Not too far from Harrogate. But a different world away

Ladyincrimson · 15/01/2023 12:36

Lived in York all my life. It’s a beautiful, historic city. I love having little local holidays to Bridlington/Scarborough/Whitby. I wouldn’t ever want to live anywhere else.

I'm aware there are rundown parts of Yorkshire but to imply that there aren't any towns which aren't rundown which have housing available is just not true

You can’t judge the whole of Yorkshire by Harrogate or York. There are plenty of grim and run down places in the county. I have lived in some of them! There are plenty of beautiful places too but certainly not everywhere is Harrogate!

Because they’re all heathens on the wrong side of the Pennines !

Mustardcustardgrumblebellyandgravy · 15/01/2023 12:42

This is why they've just called it a 3 bed "home" in the listing - it's basically a maisonette!

I'm in the south east and will likely down size to a flat at some point, ideally two bed. I like Yorkshire although more familiar with Lancashire. Don't need much space and would value location over size. The window situation could feel claustrophobic in dining room though, hadn't spotted that.

VeronicaVanHoopen · 15/01/2023 12:46

@SchoolTripDrama I mean, I literally said in my post that it wasn't everyone and it was just a personal experience but I am entitled to my opinion. I knew I'd get the Yorkshire Defence League jumping on my post but that's life I guess 😂

iklboo · 15/01/2023 12:58

Those are picture postcard photos of Yorkshire, though. Showing it at its best.

There are lots of beautiful, chocolate box places. Equally there are a lot of run down, shabby, dismal places. Like anywhere else.

I would add I've not beg any small minded bigots from Yorkshire, though. Obviously not met every single one but those I know are lovely folk.

happygertie · 15/01/2023 12:59

The best. I feel lucky to of been born and raised in Yorkshire

Yeah, l live very near the Derbyshire border.

Sometkned people say l have a slight Midlands accent. I get offended.

Harrogate really needs a ring road.

Harrogate's had a ring road for decades. The traffic is worse than it's ever been though!

clutchingatpearls · 15/01/2023 13:39

I am a soft southerner who went to live in Yorkshire and I adore the place. It's where my heart is.

Knickerthief1 · 15/01/2023 13:40

Countryside is lovely - some of the bigger towns and cities not so much! People are friendly though and housing in some areas is cheap.

I really wouldn't describe the A59 and A61 as a ring road.

It goes into Harrogate, through the town and has a lot of lights.

StormzyWho · 15/01/2023 14:18

Harrogate isn't all picture postcard though! I wouldn't choose to live there.

It has Jennyfields for a start and similar crime issues to every other market town in the country, county lines etc.

It might have lovely old buildings from an age of gentrification/spa but it is just a northern town in 2022 with the same issues as many of the others mentioned on this thread.

PrincessConstance · 15/01/2023 16:11

Harrogate is hardly gangster ville.
