Cheese on toast

saltedpretzel2 · 14/01/2023 20:51

This delicious snack is made by first grilling one side of the bread. Turn it over, cover with cheese and pop back under the grill to melt the cheese yum.

DH thinks you should grill both sides of the bread and then put cheese on the toast and back under the grill to melt. Results in edges being pretty burnt.

AIBU that my way is the correct way to make cheese on toast?

I also do this, it's the most efficient way

Glitterblue · 14/01/2023 22:19

I used to do it your DH's way, then a few years ago when I had the flu, my brother had come over to look after DD when DH had to go to work, and he made her some cheese on toast for lunch, your way, which I only found out after DD kept asking me to make it the same way her uncle did. I had to ask him what he'd done differently and I always make it his way now.

Skyliner1 · 14/01/2023 22:19

My quote failed. I was supposed to be replying about using the toaster followed by the microwave.

NotMeNoNo · 14/01/2023 22:22

Lightly toast bread in toaster
Butter and add Slices of cheese (sliced from block not plastic)
Grill until bubbling
Black edges add to experience

RosesAndHellebores · 14/01/2023 22:23

I have read that it's perfectly possible to turn the toaster on it's side, add cheese to the upside of the bread, slide it in and switch it on. Never tried it.

Trixiefirecracker · 14/01/2023 22:23

We were taught ( and marked) on making cheese on toast in Domestic Science. I got an A grade so feel absolutely qualified to categorically state the correct way, which is the Op’s way. We also had to do it in Brownies too for some badge or other. Anyone straying from this path is incorrect and would have failed ‘O’ level DS in the 80s 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 14/01/2023 22:24

I think my first method is properly called Welsh rarebit. Buck rarebit has a poached egg added.

I toast both sides, one lighter than the other then cover in cheese on the lightest side. With a dash of Lea & Perrins on top. I love cheese on toast.

This Is The Way

LincolnshireYellowBelly · 14/01/2023 22:30

You are completely right, and he is wrong.
Your method makes ‘cheese-on-toast’, his method is for cheese… on toast. 2 very different things.

I had to re-educate my husband too 🙄

Fuckitydoodah · 14/01/2023 22:30

I'm firmly in the it has to be toasted on both sides camp.

Cheese in the microwave and spread over toast. Eaten while cheese is soft.

Moonshine86 · 14/01/2023 22:32

I’m with dh but each to their own

Me too - half way through, I get a knife and spread half melted cheese out to the sides if needed to not get burnt edges 😁

ShandaLear · 14/01/2023 22:33

I’m taking bets on the number of people on this thread having cheese on toast tonight. I’m going with 80%.

Mine is very well toasted on one side, then cheese and thinly sliced beef tomato and black pepper on the other, then BLASTED, under the grill.

WildCherryBlossom · 14/01/2023 22:33

OP I do it your way. I firmly believe in this method. DH does it the same way as your DH. He firmly believes in that method.

I cannot brining him around to my way of thinking on this subject, After about 20 years together he is finally making a drinkable cup of coffee. I live in hope of a decent slice of cheese on toast one day 😂

Yep I did straight after I read the thread! Yum!

Going back to our Domestic Science Lessons when I was 12, we were taught that you lightly toasted one side then turned over and then buttered before adding the cheese. That way the cheese stayed evenly on the bread and the whole thing remained flat.
All this along with the science bit of the lesson explaining why the bread turned brown under the grill!! In case you don't the heat draws the moisture out of the bread and in the process of doing so changes the colour of the bread!!
That was lesson two - lesson one was how to make a Jam Sandwich and a pot of tea!! 😀

Thursa · 14/01/2023 22:36

Toast bread in toaster. Cheese on one side. Stick it under the grill till the cheese melts.

or, toast, add thinly sliced tomato, top with cheese, grill till melted.

PartySock · 14/01/2023 22:37

Very lightly toast. Then add cheese and grill until melted.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 14/01/2023 22:37

Both ways are acceptable and delicious.

Thinly sliced onion under the cheese is v nice, as is mango chutney.

Am going to try the melting cheese in the microwave method! Exciting!

Catchtwentyone · 14/01/2023 22:40

You’re all wrong!
Easiest and best tasting way is not to toast or grill but to cover bread with grated cheese and pop it in the oven.
Cheese melts and bubbles without burning and bread gets totally crisp all the way through.

eurochick · 14/01/2023 22:41

You have to toast both sides! Otherwise it is just cheese on sogginess, not cheese on toast.

Jaxhog · 14/01/2023 22:42

I'm with you Op. Toast one side, spread the other side with a little English mustard, cover with cheese, then finish with a few drops of Worcester sauce. Alternatly, replace the topping with properly made Welsh Rarebit sauce made with cheese and beer. Yum!

AnnieSnap · 14/01/2023 22:43

I’ve always done it like your DH and hated the singed edges. Your way has opened my eyes to the sensible way 👍
