Cheese on toast

saltedpretzel2 · 14/01/2023 20:51

This delicious snack is made by first grilling one side of the bread. Turn it over, cover with cheese and pop back under the grill to melt the cheese yum.

DH thinks you should grill both sides of the bread and then put cheese on the toast and back under the grill to melt. Results in edges being pretty burnt.

AIBU that my way is the correct way to make cheese on toast?

You are both wrong as neither of you have added Worcestershire sauce.

Never in all my born days have I heard of anyone making toast and then putting cheese on it and toasting it again.

No?! How?! It’s a British classic

TinySaltLick · 14/01/2023 20:59

You are making cheese on bread so are completely wrong. Your husband should be applauded for his culinary excellence

MalbecMakesMeHappy · 14/01/2023 21:00

You're right apart from missing out the dash of Worcestershire sauce

honeylou42 · 14/01/2023 21:00

You are right

purpledalmation · 14/01/2023 21:00

Melting cheese in a plate in the microwave and then spreading it on the toast is actually delicious too. The cheese gets really strong as the fat oozes out.

ColdHandsHotHead · 14/01/2023 21:00

He is evil.

purpledalmation · 14/01/2023 21:00

God help me I've even fried cheese first in a frying pan!

What do you mean?! How do you make it then?

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 14/01/2023 21:01

Urmmm you are so wrong OP. Also how does the butter go on if you arent lightly toasting first. Come on now people.

pavillion1 · 14/01/2023 21:02

you are right .

BCBird · 14/01/2023 21:02

Your husband is right, however I make the toast then put cheese on but don't even melt it🙄

So you just melt cheese on bread?
It's cheese on toast not cheese on bread.

TrainspottingWelsh · 14/01/2023 21:02

Ya both bu. He is mainly right, in that you toast both sides, but he’s doing it wrong if the edges are burning. The cheese should go right to the edges so it melts over them.
Can’t decide if you are most warped for your half arsed toasting effort, or he is for skimping on the cheese. This is ltb territory for both of you.

There is a group on Facebook dedicated to this amazing delicacy. It is called cheese toast love

its a very friendly accepting group so some MNetters may not fit in.

sandwich cage of the dualit.

Glittertwins · 14/01/2023 21:05

Team DH...I put the bread in the toaster whilst grill is warming up. Toast buttered, cheese on then under the grill to melt it down.

AlisonDonut · 14/01/2023 21:06

When you toast one side, it dries the other out slightly so that the sides don't burn and it isn't soggy, it is lovely. You are right. He is wrong.

Add tabasco and some ketchup and you've got it.

I once had a boyfriend whose version of cheese on toast was, toast out of the toaster with cheese on top and then served. We didn't last much longer than that to be honest.

ThinWomansBrain · 14/01/2023 21:06

& add mayonnaise

Lightly toasted on both sides, then cheese and back in. Your way is passable but soggy, if he burns the edges then I’d LTB.

This.

DilemmaDelilah · 14/01/2023 21:08

The correct way to make it is to put the bread in the toaster until it is very lightly toasted, then put under the grill so that one side is properly toasted, turn over and cover with cheese. Grill until starting to go brown and crispy - delicious! Having said all that I am currently having air fryer cheese on toast for breakfast most days. It isn't toast at all, but it does go slightly crispy. It is nice, even if it isn't proper cheese on toast. Apparently it does good grilled cheese sandwiches, but as I'm limiting myself to only 2 slices of wholemeal bread a day I'm not going to waste them both on breakfast.
