Cheese on toast

saltedpretzel2 · 14/01/2023 20:51

This delicious snack is made by first grilling one side of the bread. Turn it over, cover with cheese and pop back under the grill to melt the cheese yum.

DH thinks you should grill both sides of the bread and then put cheese on the toast and back under the grill to melt. Results in edges being pretty burnt.

AIBU that my way is the correct way to make cheese on toast?

I do it like your dh otherwise it’s a bit soggy. My dh makes it like you though.

AnotherNameChangeYes · 14/01/2023 22:05

You’re right! DH makes it the wrong way.

GrumpyOldBastard · 14/01/2023 22:05

Team DH.
I sometimes put ketchup on the toast before the cheese, if I’m feeling particularly grubby.

jammydodgers93 · 14/01/2023 22:05

You are 100% right.

Mothership4two · 14/01/2023 22:06

No you are right OP and no the bread doesn't go soggy. Turning grill on...

Benjispruce4 · 14/01/2023 22:06

I put the bread in the toaster first but pop it before fully toasted then put cheese on one side then under grill.

Your husband is correct. You seem to be making cheese on bread!? If the edges burn you're not using enough cheese...

seconded. The cheese needs to cover the crust, and then you get the extra delicious dribbled, bubbling cheese that goes thin and crunchy.

CohenTree · 14/01/2023 22:07

One of my secondary school boyfriends would put Dairylea spread on two slices of white bread and then put them in the toaster.
Even in those days I felt for his poor mum.

MrsDoylesApron · 14/01/2023 22:07

Toasting fork*. Damn autocorrect. Although toasting dork also works.

Like some PPs I have an ex who made toast (both sides). Put cheese on. And that was it.
HE DIDN'T TOAST THE CHEESE

He also ate kitkats like a psycho.

That’s just cheese with toast.

Best way to eat a Kit Kat 👇

Cheese on toast
MrsJackRackham · 14/01/2023 22:08

EVERYONE IS WRONG! Cheese on toast is toast with slices of cheese on top.
Roasted cheese, however, is toast one side, add cheese and grill very slowly so the cheese darkens. Add black pepper. <Gavel>

Lougle · 14/01/2023 22:08

The rules are clear:
Bread toasted on one side.
Cheese cut into even slices.
Cheese covering untoasted side right to the very edges.
Under the grill until the cheese is bubbling and has turned slightly orange, but hasn't gone too crispy.

DPotter · 14/01/2023 22:08

You're right

Toasting one side only doesn't give you soggy cheese on toast. At least mine isn't

I don't like the burnt edges when toasted on both sides and if you completely cover the slice in cheese, it all melts and drops off.

PS I put slices of onion under the cheese - lovely and crunchy. Like to sound of Lea & Perrins on top though- might just try that

Nugg · 14/01/2023 20:52

I lightly toast in the toaster then cover every single part of one side with cheese.

When I'm not on low carb 😫

This.

This is correct.

ThatsMsAtomicBob · 14/01/2023 22:10

You are both wrong. You put the cheese on one slice of the bread, edge to edge, and put that under the grill to melt. Then put the second slice of bread on top, buttered, and let that toast. Then turn it over and toast the other side of the bread. Perfectly melted cheese, perfectly toasted bread.

gogohmm · 14/01/2023 22:10

You are correct, your dh is wrong (of course) however the better option is to grate cheese, add an egg, spoonful of whole grain mustard and a little milk then add to the untoasted side!

BoadiceaOverall · 14/01/2023 22:11

I actually toast the bread lightly beforehand in the toaster, then put the toast under the grill with the cheese on only for as long as it takes for the cheese to melt.

MrsDoylesApron · 14/01/2023 22:12

The only acceptable accompaniment is HP sauce. Applied to the top of the bubbling cheese in a 'Z' shape in the manner of Zorro.

CohenTree · 14/01/2023 22:12

Many seem to be confusing grilled cheese with cheese on toast.

A relative of mine microwaves cheese on a plate then slides/spreads the cheese on

This is what I do as I don’t have a grill so I have to melt it in the microwave.

clary · 14/01/2023 22:15

You are right Op. I also like to add mayo, pickle (but not big pickle) or possibly a very fine grade chutney before adding cheese on the soft bread.

Your way brings a delectable contrast of crunchy outer and softer inner. Mmm

VeganStar · 14/01/2023 22:15

With vegan cheese

That's a cheese toasty. Nice, but different from cheese on toast

OnMyWayToSenility · 14/01/2023 22:17

Horseradish
Mustard
I've never heard of such heathens 😱

Grill roast one side
Turn
Put cheese on and grill
Dash of Worcestershire sauce

Done ✅

mumda · 14/01/2023 22:18

Microwave toast with a thin layer of chutney smothered in grated cheese.
Less messy than using the grill.
Or a toasted cheese sandwich with mango chutney.
