Cheese on toast

saltedpretzel2 · 14/01/2023 20:51

This delicious snack is made by first grilling one side of the bread. Turn it over, cover with cheese and pop back under the grill to melt the cheese yum.

DH thinks you should grill both sides of the bread and then put cheese on the toast and back under the grill to melt. Results in edges being pretty burnt.

AIBU that my way is the correct way to make cheese on toast?

No?! How?! It’s a British classic

Yeah to toast one side.. not both

AllTheYoungGoodyTwoShoes · 14/01/2023 21:40

I agree with you! In fact, you've put me in the mood now for cheese on toast.....

Icantstopthisfeeling · 14/01/2023 21:41

I used to do it like your DH as that’s how my DM did it.

When I got to university and watched how my friends did it I was horrified…then quickly converted. If you stab through the semi melted cheese and add soy sauce it’s extra delicious.

A relative of mine microwaves cheese on a plate then slides/spreads the cheese on

This is the least faff way. But must have Hendersons relish.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 14/01/2023 21:43

You're definitely right.
But you need a layer of horseradish sauce under the cheese.

bobbytorq · 14/01/2023 21:44

Both side of the bread need to be toasted. The cheese then needs to go right to the edges and then the crust doesn;t burn.

Op is correct and I second the hendos (or Worcestershire sauce if you're not near Sheffield).

Your husband is correct. You seem to be making cheese on bread!? If the edges burn you're not using enough cheese...

Exactly.

CrocodilesCry · 14/01/2023 21:46

Bread toasted on one side only. To do it in your toaster (while the grill heats up) toast two slices of bread back to back in the same slot. Put the cheese on both untoasted sides and under the grill.

Team DH on this one.

Toast it, butter, marmite...thick layer of cheese covering to edge with slight hangover...under grill.

If not using marmite add chutney afterwards to top...extra points if homemade chutney

Your DH and my DH obviously had the same, incompetent, culinary training.

Toast one side of the bread, or it is really dry to eat.

Not if it's buttered it isn't. Butter adds to the glorious ooziness.
Cholesterol? Pah! Take statins.
(Actually I top it with kimchi to add to my five a day AND fermented foods intake. )

Caramelsmadfuzzytail · 14/01/2023 21:48

Cheese on toast is: toast one side, while waiting grate some cheese, turn bread over when t'other side is brown, Bury the uncooked side in grated cheese, shove back under the grill (hoping you don't touch the element), wait for the cheese to bubble and remove. If the edges are showing, spread the cheese around more.
Failing that I get my toasty maker out and make cheese and tomato toasties.

Stravaig · 14/01/2023 21:48

Toast one side of the bread, turn.
Very lightly toast the other side, remove.
Add wholegrain mustard, sliced cherry tomatoes & cheese; toast some more.
I really fancy this now, but alas no grill. It's been years.

DILLIGAFQUEEN · 14/01/2023 21:48

Bread goes in toaster for 1 min then under grill with the cheese on till it melts

Interesting split.

Ketchup or onion chutney are the only suitable condiments

I now really want cheese on toast

Interesting splitShockof

That’s the spirit 💪

You either eat cheese on toast properly or you don’t.

I'm almost afraid to admit that I toast the bread in the toaster the put cheese on and microwave for 10 sec intervals until melted....Blush

Same here. I want cheese on toast now, this minute

JoBrodie · 14/01/2023 21:52

Toast both sides first. I use a toaster but under the grill would be fine. I don't usually switch the grill on until I've sliced enough cheese though (which can take a while because I have to slice the cheese faster than I can eat the slices) and microwaved a tin of button mushrooms (drained and patted dry). Those then get sandwiched between the two bits of cheesy toast.

The mushroooms try and ping out of course but it's fun pushing them back in again.

Love this.

Verbena17 · 14/01/2023 21:52

I make ours like this…

Toast the bread in toaster.
Remove from toaster
Add slices of cheese
Whack it in microwave until cheese melts.

NB * this is for us strange people who love non-crunchy cheese on toast.

YANBU. I'm low carb so haven't done this in a while but never toasted on both sides.
