Cheese on toast

saltedpretzel2 · 14/01/2023 20:51

This delicious snack is made by first grilling one side of the bread. Turn it over, cover with cheese and pop back under the grill to melt the cheese yum.

DH thinks you should grill both sides of the bread and then put cheese on the toast and back under the grill to melt. Results in edges being pretty burnt.

AIBU that my way is the correct way to make cheese on toast?

You're all wrong. There's no place for unmelted cheese on toast. Cheese must be grated, mixed with mustard, butter, and a drop of beer, melted gently in a saucepan, then spread onto lightly toasted bread and grilled until bubbling.

You’d hate me - bugger grilling 😄

Bread in toaster. Once done, add cheese to one side then whack in microwave for 60 seconds.

Et voila: perfect cheese on toast 😊

I've always wondered if that would work.
Does the bread not go a bit soggy though?

Urmmm you are so wrong OP. Also how does the butter go on if you arent lightly toasting first. Come on now people.

Butter? Are you INSANE??

This sounds grim 😂

I toast both sides, one lighter than the other then cover in cheese on the lightest side. With a dash of Lea & Perrins on top. I love cheese on toast.

This!

Nope! It really doesn’t. I was unsure myself at first but a friend showed me the magic and I will never return to the dark side of grilling 😄

ChristmasCakeAndStilton · 14/01/2023 21:26

Your DH and my DH obviously had the same, incompetent, culinary training.

Toast one side of the bread, or it is really dry to eat.

Orangebadger · 14/01/2023 21:27

Pop on the toaster, lightly toasted then with cheese on top under the grill, so both side. Never tried it your way though.

saltedpretzel2 · 14/01/2023 21:27

Interesting split.

Ketchup or onion chutney are the only suitable condiments

I now really want cheese on toast

Melting cheese in a plate in the microwave and then spreading it on the toast is actually delicious too. The cheese gets really strong as the fat oozes out.

Pretty sure it’s legal to hang someone for this.

Oh no. Tabasco is the best on melted cheese!

Stevie6 · 14/01/2023 21:30

You grate the cheese and mix with a dash of milk, first side of toast is properly toasted, second side is lightly toasted then cheese added and melted into gloopy goodness

LuluBlakey1 · 14/01/2023 21:31

YABU and your husband is right. No question. Toasted both sides then covered in cheese and grilled to melt.

BettyOBarley · 14/01/2023 21:31

Team DH I'm afraid.

I've tried it your way and it's soggy as hell.

Just make sure there's loooads of cheese right to the edges and then it doesn't burn the bread 👍

Tamarindtree · 14/01/2023 21:32

I like to add a tablespoon of milk and some black pepper to grated cheese before adding it to toast. I only toast one side.

WandaWonder · 14/01/2023 21:32

I say you are right

But as side thing I love sticking cheese in between two slices of bread and frying it both sides

stopringingme · 14/01/2023 21:34

Your husband is correct.

Bread in the toaster, lightly toasted, spread butter on, marmite or Worcester sauce if you fancy it, maybe a slice of ham, some sliced tomato or onion and then grated cheese on the top then under the grill until done to your preference.

Clevs · 14/01/2023 21:35

I toast completely on one side. Then turn it over and half toast the other side, sprinkle on grated cheese then grill again until melted.

I find if you put the cheese on without toasting the second side slightly it's a bit too soft. But it doesn't need a full toast because as you've mentioned the edges get burnt.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 14/01/2023 21:36

I make it like you do, OP. Lovely soft bread under the cheese.

RethinkingLife · 14/01/2023 21:37

AutumnIsMyFavouriteSeason · 14/01/2023 20:58

I toast both sides on a pan (gas hob) with butter. Then cheese loaded.

I was brought up to do it the same way as OP's DH.

However, I recently discovered that your way is much better. (Possibly because I no longer have a gas grill.)

WonderingWanda · 14/01/2023 21:37

He is correct

Beginningless · 14/01/2023 21:37

I’m team you and am rather shocked at this camp of both side toasters, I’ve never heard such a thing (love mn for these revelations about how others live). I’m going to try it now and report back. But those saying that our way is cheese on bread, it’s not, one side is toasted and the cheesy side is then toasted!

HelloCanYouHearMe · 14/01/2023 21:37

Toast the bread, cover one side in cheese and then airfry for 2 - 3 minutes

AnonWeeMouse · 14/01/2023 21:39

Golden toasted in the toaster.
Buttered, Cheddar grated on to one side.
Under grill until melted but not browned.
Thin string of BBQ sauce in an S shape.
