Cheese on toast

saltedpretzel2 · 14/01/2023 20:51

This delicious snack is made by first grilling one side of the bread. Turn it over, cover with cheese and pop back under the grill to melt the cheese yum.

DH thinks you should grill both sides of the bread and then put cheese on the toast and back under the grill to melt. Results in edges being pretty burnt.

AIBU that my way is the correct way to make cheese on toast?

OP posts:

I'm with your DH. The idea of soggy bread under the cheese makes me feel queasy. The burnt edges around the bubbling cheese are the best bit.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 14/01/2023 21:53

Put the bread in the toaster then top with cheese and grill.

CohenTree · 14/01/2023 21:54

OP your method is called a gum sandwich.
Surely cheese on toast is simply toast... with cheese on it?

TheProvincialLady · 14/01/2023 21:54

Coffeellama · 14/01/2023 21:00

What do you mean?! How do you make it then?

I make it the way of all right thinking people. Toast the bread on one side only before adding grated cheese to the virgin side and lightly grilling. Like God intended.

FlibbertyGibbitt · 14/01/2023 21:54

bread in toaster. Add Red Leicester, melt in microwave. Then cook baked beans and add into cheese on toast. Baked beans, why hasn’t anyone mentioned them ? Food of the gods

Plasmodesmata · 14/01/2023 21:54

I agree with your husband. Lightly toast before applying cheese to avoid burnt edges.

Thighdentitycrisis · 14/01/2023 21:54

You are right
DH is wrong and makes it far too crispy. i put 2 slices of toast together in one slot of the toaster to cook just one side of each, then grilling the cheese on the uncooked side. (Also, put pickle under cheese)

xprincessxjanetx · 14/01/2023 21:55

You are correct, your DH is a weirdo sorry!

Purplecatshopaholic · 14/01/2023 21:57

Team DH here

ChekhovsMum · 14/01/2023 21:58

I will never forget my horror when offered cheese on toast at my ILs house. DP made some toast in the toaster, cut come slices of cheddar, put them on top, and gave me that on a plate.

If yours recognises that the cheese needs to be melted, you’re doing better than me.

Foxglove69 · 14/01/2023 21:59

I once went out with someone who toasted both sides then put the cheese on. He swore that was the only way to do it and just wouldnt have it when I said I dont do it that way. Anyway a few months later I decided to leave him in peace with his cheese on toast 😂

RosesAndHellebores · 14/01/2023 22:00

Grated cheddar, 4 good handfuls
Half top English Mustard powder
Tablespoon of Guinness
Dash worcester sauce
Dollop of butter

Add the above to a heavy based saucepan Over a gentle heat.

Meanwhile toast two slices of thickly sliced white.

When cheese is melted and well stirred, spread over the toast.

Bung under a hot grill until it bubbles.

Alternatively butter two slices of toasted bread, top with thin cheese slices and sliced tomato, bung under grill.

All depends on the washing up.

MrsDoylesApron · 14/01/2023 22:00

I think the abomination that is two toasted sides must date from the introduction of the modern toaster which does both sides simultaneously.

In the olden days surely no sane person in need of cheese on toast waited twice as long for their delicious savoury snack. Faffing around with the grill or toasting dork at half time to do the bread on both sides? Madness.

You are right OP. Your DH is everything that is wrong with our decadent so-called civilization.

CarbsafterMarbs · 14/01/2023 22:01

Ooh, I really want some cheese on toast now. Think I’m going to go and make some 😋

<misses point of post>

diddl · 14/01/2023 22:01

I make it the same as your husband.

I like burnt edges though.

People who don't like my cheese on toast are welcome to make their own!

DahliaMacNamara · 14/01/2023 22:01

No double siding.
No toasters.
Gas grill. One side toasted. Cover other side liberally with cheese. Melt cheese.
Should not be controversial.

imnotwhoyouthinkiam · 14/01/2023 22:02

Like some PPs I have an ex who made toast (both sides). Put cheese on. And that was it.
HE DIDN'T TOAST THE CHEESE

He also ate kitkats like a psycho.

StoneofDestiny · 14/01/2023 22:02

You are right OP, your DH is wrong

Dwrcegin · 14/01/2023 22:02

A relative of mine microwaves cheese on a plate then slides/spreads the cheese on

Good god no, how could anyone do such a thing?!

KangarooKenny · 14/01/2023 22:03

He is right, you are wrong.

DanceCapital · 14/01/2023 22:03

ClementWeatherToday · 14/01/2023 20:52

Your husband is correct. You seem to be making cheese on bread!? If the edges burn you're not using enough cheese...

Exactly this 👆

Sartre · 14/01/2023 22:03

I toast both sides otherwise one side will still be bread and will in turn be soggy so I agree with your DH.

Gemma987 · 14/01/2023 22:04

You are correct!

I saw someone at work so this. I was like, Wtaf is this woman doing!!

Then it all made sense - never gone back to the mess and time of grilling!

missb10 · 14/01/2023 22:05

This is how we have always made cheese on toast in our family - it's a bit more complicated but way more tasty than just putting cheese on toast, we call it savoury cheese on toast. First grate some cheese into a bowl then add brown sauce, mustard and a little milk to moisten. Toast some bread on one side, turn it over and butter the untoasted side and spread the cheese mixture on top. Return to the grilll until the cheese is bubbling and starting to brown.
