Cheese on toast

saltedpretzel2 · 14/01/2023 20:51

This delicious snack is made by first grilling one side of the bread. Turn it over, cover with cheese and pop back under the grill to melt the cheese yum.

DH thinks you should grill both sides of the bread and then put cheese on the toast and back under the grill to melt. Results in edges being pretty burnt.

AIBU that my way is the correct way to make cheese on toast?

She is correct but obviously you make sure it's not too toasted, cover well with cheese, the odd more well done bit adds to the flavour

Raspberry290 · 14/01/2023 21:08

I‘m with your husband! If the edges are going black, turn the grill down

ChatSamosa · 14/01/2023 21:09

Grill both sides, butter then top with cheese and back under.

I'm with you op, especially if you smear some marmite on the bread side, layer cheese on top. Cheddar and marmite is an amazing combo.

Deeandra · 14/01/2023 21:10

A relative of mine microwaves cheese on a plate then slides/spreads the cheese on

Your relative is a monster

LetsDoThis2023 · 14/01/2023 21:10

Marmite UNDER cheese though folks c'mon! I

Minniem2020 · 14/01/2023 21:10

Toaster first then the cheese on and put under the grill.
My dad doesn't even melt the cheese, savage.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 14/01/2023 21:10

Team DH

Otherwise it half toast half bread and it's a bit claggy

If you want to avoid the burnt then do the cheese to the edges or toast it in the oven rather than grill

BertaHoon · 14/01/2023 21:12

YANBU OP because I don't have any cheese 😭

Also of course you toast both sides, one less so, granted.
Avoid burnt edges by ensuring the cheese covers the entire slice.

You're welcome. 🤣

My DH makes amazing cheese on toast and he does what you said NOT what your DH does

StillWeRise · 14/01/2023 21:14

OP you have the correct method and your DH needs some sort of remedial support.
To make cheese on toast even more delicious, I recommend marmalade under the cheese. I know it sounds mad but don't knock it till you've tried it.
You will thank me, I promise.

Margo34 · 14/01/2023 21:16

You are right. Don't forget to splash liberally with Worcestershire Sauce before eating. 😍

Wilkolampshade · 14/01/2023 21:16

Deffo both sides toasted. Cheese overhanging edges slightly. Sometimes Colmans mustard under cheese. Sometimes Worcestershire sauce after. Always a shit-tonne of tabasco.

Team DH here.

TwoMonthsOff · 14/01/2023 21:17

@ClarissaParry
i do this the cheats cheese on toast it’s amazing lightly toast the brad in the toaster and I use the slices of cheddar melt in microwave on a plate and scrape it onto the buttered toast it’s very successful and it’s t all dried up - only thing is the plate is quite greasy but fine if you are lucky enough to have a dishwasher 🐷

BCBird · 14/01/2023 21:17

Mate told me toast is nicer under the grill than in the toaster. I didn't believe her. I stand corrected

Lost123454 · 14/01/2023 21:18

People should do it how they want and not bother about what anybody else thinks or does

Why do people always have to look for clarity in everything they do?

IAmAlreadyRegrettingMyGreyColourScheme · 14/01/2023 21:18

I'm with your DH I'm afraid.

TwoMonthsOff · 14/01/2023 21:18

@ClarissaParry that’s more of a method for a toastie tbh rather thats traditional cheese on toast but you should give it a try it’s yum

Summerfun54321 · 14/01/2023 21:19

OP you are making what can only be described as a poor man's croque monsieur or "cheese on bread". For God's sake at least pop a slice of ham in there if you must use that technique.

HRTQueen · 14/01/2023 20:54

You are right

your dh is wrong

and best cheese on toast is made under a gas grill sadly it’s not the same under an electric grill so rarely make it now though it’s the best snack/tea every

I like cheddar or Cheshire

All of this. I love Cheshire cheese. Definitely the best for melting purposes

Mincedpies · 14/01/2023 21:21

You’d hate me - bugger grilling 😄

Bread in toaster. Once done, add cheese to one side then whack in microwave for 60 seconds.

Et voila: perfect cheese on toast 😊
