Things that shouldn't be allowed....

Following on from the petrol price thread (and in true Victor Meldrew style) what do you think shouldn't be allowed......I'll kick off with the following.

Petrol should be the same price from a retailer no matter where you buy it from

Nothing should ever be double taxed (Petrol again....Fuel Duty and VAT!!!)

All displayed prices for anything should be inclusive of VAT

A Council should not be able to get away with paying for damage caused by potholes by saying 'We are aware and it's due to be fixed'

Electricity and Gas prices should be easy to understand

The same goes for Water (who last bought a cubic metre of water from a shop when they wanted a drink?)

If someone is sentenced to life for murder, this should mean for the rest of their life, not to be released after 10, 15, 20 years etc....

Homework
Supermarket shelves still being full of single-use plastic bottles , eg detergents, spray cleaners, laundry wash, shampoos, conditioners.
supply and demand pricing including artificial supply issues
ticket touts/ resellers/price gougers.
tax avoidance

You should be able to buy foods/drinks with sugar in if you choose to. Forcing sweeteners on people shouldn’t be allowed.

Oh, definitely. Whatever the government's reason - whether a desire to cash in or just an innate hatred of people with diabetes - it's ridiculous that you can buy 20 B&H or a bottle of Glenfiddich, as long as you're willing to pay the tax penalty on something that is/could be dangerous for your health; but the amount of drinks you can now buy that don't have nasty sweeteners in is so very tiny in supermarkets and non-existent in corner shops.

Expanding on the petrol/diesel theme, I think that fuel stations should be made by law to also display the price of the super/premium options, visible from the roadside. There was a time when fuel wasn't ridiculously expensive and normal drivers just used normal fuel - so I suppose the reckoning was that people with Ferraris didn't overly care about the higher price for greater performance. However, that has now all changed, since the shrinkflation-par-excellance perpetrated by the government in 'watering' down petrol by law for highly spurious environmental 'reasons'.

Now, lots of people buy the 'super' petrol as a replacement for what normal petrol used to be like; and ironically, some of the oldest, cheapest cars - owned by the poorest people - now simply cannot use so-called 'ordinary' petrol; so somebody in a 25yo Polo is in the same position as the owner of a brand new Lamborghini, with neither of them having a clue what their fuel is going to cost them until they've removed the filler cap and already started to pump.

That as soon as a girl turns 16 she is fair game for any dirty old man/ groomer.

There should be a staggered age of consent so that older men can’t prey on teenagers who are still in school and it’s perfectly legal.

We had a family friend whose daughter went off with a man in his late 30s as soon as she turned 16.

There was absolutely nothing that social services could do as she wasn’t considered vulnerable and no complaint was being made by her. They suspected she had been groomed (he was a “friend of a friend”) but without any proof there was no way of protecting her unless she made a complaint that the relationship wasn’t consensual.

This is both ridiculous and inaccurate.

The legal age is 16 for a reason. If anything it should be increased to an age where coercion isn’t a thing- but that’s kind of the point because it can happen to anyone at any age.

If parents suspect/feel their daughter is at risk or vulnerable, they can in fact make her a ward of court and the police /the authorities can then step in. A court will decide if that can be done, therefore there are systems in place to determine vulnerability. If a 16 year old is not deemed vulnerable enough by a court and a judge, then she should be allowed to have a relationship with whomever she chooses.

It’s laughable that there are some parents who complain to everyone endlessly about such a situation, but at the same time don’t have the backbone/can’t be bothered to go through this process. Hypocrites.

Driving with loose animal (e.g. dog/cat)in the car.

It’s already illegal to not have your dog restrained. I don’t know about cats.

“The Highway Code states in Rule 57: “When in a vehicle, make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.”

So cats too. Maybe they should start prosecuting people more.

All these bloody threads on the royal family. I’ve no interest in them at all and the vast majority of trending now is about one of them. Is there anyway to get rid?

DontStopMeNow7 · 09/01/2023 02:37

People who insist on reversing into parking spaces and hold everyone up. I don’t know why but it annoys me soooo much.

MissTakenForAnother · 09/01/2023 03:16

Inheritance tax should be banned.

The deceased has already paid tax on their income!

MissTakenForAnother · 09/01/2023 03:23

An accepted offer on a house should be legally binding by both parties (unless something is seriously wrong with the survey).

I've wasted a lot of time and money because a seller changed their mind.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/01/2023 03:30

They're going to take longer one way, though - either reversing in or reversing out. Unless they're one of those strange people who will insist on reversing into one side of a 'throughy', instead of driving straight through!

BlusteryLake · 09/01/2023 03:51

People should not be allowed to tear down and re-build homes that are less than a set number of years old and have nothing wrong with them, just because they can afford to and they fancy it. It happens all the time where I live and is so wasteful.

whatthefactuall · 09/01/2023 04:03

The BBC demanding we pay for a TV license, regardless of whether we actually want to receive BBC channels or not.

CanadianJohn · 09/01/2023 04:09

Ads for gambling on TV, especially during sports events. Ice hockey is almost unwatchable now, with non-stop gambling ads.

FeelingwearyFeeelingsmall · 09/01/2023 04:49

I couldn't agree more about sugar free drinks. My mum currently has a BMI of 15. She is completely off her food and the only thing she wants to drink is cola. But our local hospital only sells sugar free Coke and the care home where she spends a lot of time will only give her her sugar free Coke.

Also calories on menus shouldn't happen. People who care about healthy eating make healthy choices without seeing the calories. People like my sister who has a history of anorexia might be triggered by seeing the numbers. I doubt anyone who habitually eats too much or makes unhealthy choices will be influenced by them.

DeFacto · 09/01/2023 04:59

Blimey.

I think second properties are problematic.

Morally, it's not ok.

secretrugbyfan · 09/01/2023 04:59

If you have a passport and it is valid on the date you intend to travel back home you should be allowed to use it...none of this 'it's got to have three months/six months etc. left to expiry' nonsense.

Why shouldn’t reading with intrigue be allowed?

Bags on seats on the bus to stop people sitting down.

People not booking seats on aeroplanes then expecting you to move to accommodate their needs.

Cyclists not adhering the rules (especially deliveroo type services)

Extortionate service charges on apartments

Lying about "Brexit benefits"

To be fair, I would argue that charging people travelling together on the same booking to sit together shouldn’t be allowed.

Also, don’t see the appeal of priority boarding. It doesn’t help you get to your destination any faster!

PopsicleHustler · 09/01/2023 05:35

Here here @iliketartan

Cannot stand them and the people who buy them clearly don't care about animals. My husband hates them too and said they don't mind cowering and petrified animals for the sake of a few bright sparks in the sky.
