Things that shouldn't be allowed....

Following on from the petrol price thread (and in true Victor Meldrew style) what do you think shouldn't be allowed......I'll kick off with the following.

Petrol should be the same price from a retailer no matter where you buy it from

Nothing should ever be double taxed (Petrol again....Fuel Duty and VAT!!!)

All displayed prices for anything should be inclusive of VAT

A Council should not be able to get away with paying for damage caused by potholes by saying 'We are aware and it's due to be fixed'

Electricity and Gas prices should be easy to understand

The same goes for Water (who last bought a cubic metre of water from a shop when they wanted a drink?)

If someone is sentenced to life for murder, this should mean for the rest of their life, not to be released after 10, 15, 20 years etc....

Hard working families is noxious. Just tells you who is cared about nominally.

IcakethereforeIam · 09/01/2023 18:43

Women should not be told we are bigots if we want same sex care when we are vulnerable. Single sex wards should be single sex.

Apologies for sounding like a stuck record, but please follow the link to sign and share the petition. Thank you if you have already signed it.

Celebrity game shows. They have enough privilege in their bloody lives, let us have a go! I really want to have a go at Tipping Point and would happily give any winnings to charity - I just want a go!! Ditto almost any game show!!

Get in touch and tell them you're the neighbour of the auntie of the milkman whose wife once bought a cream bun in the cafe that was run by the brother of somebody who went to the same school as somebody who auditioned (sadly unsuccessfully) to go on Love Island. They'll be biting your hand off - they can't normally secure anybody of that calibre of celebrity Grin

@StalkedByASpider - Early mental health care and diagnosis of ASD, ADD, dyslexia, depression, anxiety, and other things would save money in the long run. Giving a child tools and strategies to cope leads to better outcomes. Building a comprehensive mental health system that offered shorter waits, early therapy, and real help in emergencies would be great. More impatient beds and respite for children with severe difficulties would be helpful as well.

job adverts that say 'competitive salary and benefits'
NO tell me in ££.

Totally agree with this. No job should be advertised without a pay range. I've applied for these jobs then found the wage far below the market rate. They are just trying to get staff for the lowest price possible.

Don't get me started on those companies that advertise great amounts of holiday that are in fact the legal minimum ...

Ericaequites · 09/01/2023 19:21

@RampantIvy Santa Claus is a myth that creates unrealistic expectations for young children. It’s illogical, and losing the belief is sad for many children. Besides, parents, relatives, and friends should get full credit for giving gifts and making Christmas special.

I got to the stage of being offered a job then they told me the holiday was the statutory minimum. It was a total no brainier to me - I immediately turned it down. Statutory minimum is very unusual in my industry. Why didn’t they outline the package in full? It would have saved my time and theirs.

But house price inflation is about the only capital gain which is not taxed in any way in the UK! Inheritance tax on house price gains is 100% fair!

IHT isn't on house price "gains" though, it's on the value of the house, not how much it's gone up in value, so it's nothing like capital gains tax.

Re CGT on homes, you can't really charge it when moving up the property ladder as you need the full proceeds to be able to afford the fees and cost of the higher priced home. BUT, I think there is merit on charging CGT (at a lower rate) on your home if you're downsizing or selling up. I also think the rules need tightening up as a huge number of people "play the game" by moving into a house they've just done up for a short period and then selling it as their home, when the reality is that it's their business to buy "doer uppers" and sell them. The law (and enforcement) is very lax in that area - we know a guy who's done it every couple of years for about 20 years now - it's basically his "job", but he doesn't pay any tax as he claims each is his "home" so exempt.

It's safer. Your convenience does not trump the safety of others.

I agree. People who can’t reverse park should have their license revoked until they learn how to drive properly.

Santaswingman · 09/01/2023 20:07

Places that don’t accept cash payments. The banks make enough money without creaming the top off every transaction.

Kazzyhoward · 09/01/2023 20:09

Knuckle-dragging neanderthal tradesmen! The ones who are barely house-trained, incapable of working without a ghetto blaster at full volume, traipse mud and dog crap all over your carpet (can't be bothered to even try to wipe their feet on the doormat), spill the coffee/tea you've made for them (with 10 spoons of sugar) all over your new sofa/carpet but don't tell you, smoke in your home then lie and say they didn't, disappear "for materials" every morning at 10.30 and come back an hour later smelling of bacon buns, loudly sing the "mission impossible" theme tune whenever doing something vaguely difficult, argue that something which should be level is in fact level, when it's clear with the naked eye it's not and then claim your spirit level is wrong when you try to prove it's not level! I could go on. But basically, these days, I try to avoid having any work done that I can't do myself!

But if he lives there as his principal private residence then it is actually his home. The fact that he makes a profit is fine as he is living there while he does it up.

people complain about IHT cause they say that it’s a tax on earned income, but house price inflation isn’t earned at all, and makes up the bulk of most people’s estates.

I agree. When I was a child and when DD was small Santa brought the stockings not the big presents.

People who turn every thread into an anti-trans conversation.

I think every driver over the age of 65 should have to retake their test regularly. I see so much unsafe driving from older people it's just ridiculous that they're allowed on the roads without any oversight.

Back door privatisation of the NHS. I don't live in the UK anymore but all my family do and it's in such an atrocious state. It needs proper legislation over the number of private companies providing NHS services and making an absolute fortune. And while I'm at it pay the fucking nurses a decent wage and fund the whole thing properly.

Yes, when you're asked what things you think shouldn't be allowed, and your main thought is 'for women not to be allowed safe single-sex spaces'; but because somebody else may be upset at having to live by the same rules as everybody else, you think you'd better change it to something slightly less concerning and controversial, like 'scissors coming in packaging that you can't open without a pair of scissors'.

If you're concentrating so carefully on the facial features of who is driving every car, rather than the cars themselves, that's also not the safest practice....

IcakethereforeIam · 10/01/2023 16:57

Anti-trans threads and posts, quite rightly get deleted pretty quickly on these boards. Perhaps you've got MN mixed up with somewhere else?

People who think women's rights are anti-trans.

People who don't neuter their pets.

People who leave shopping trolleys cluttering up car parks.

People who change their minds about buying something perishable and just leave it on a shelf.

There's plenty of people who I could say this about who are well below the age of 65.
They are in a hurry to get somewhere so tailgate when if they just set off earlier they wouldn't need to rush.
People who cut off the corner when making a right turn causing approaching cars to slam on their brakes.
Don't enter the yellow box when they obviously can't exit the same said box without blocking traffic.
Jump amber lights because they don't want to wait for the next light change!
Drivers who throw a three point turn because they won't wait to make a safe turn further along the road.
Drivers who reverse out onto a main road

On second thoughts maybe everyone should retake their test every 10 years!!
