Following on from the petrol price thread (and in true Victor Meldrew style) what do you think shouldn't be allowed......I'll kick off with the following.

Petrol should be the same price from a retailer no matter where you buy it from

Nothing should ever be double taxed (Petrol again....Fuel Duty and VAT!!!)

All displayed prices for anything should be inclusive of VAT

A Council should not be able to get away with paying for damage caused by potholes by saying 'We are aware and it's due to be fixed'

Electricity and Gas prices should be easy to understand

The same goes for Water (who last bought a cubic metre of water from a shop when they wanted a drink?)

If someone is sentenced to life for murder, this should mean for the rest of their life, not to be released after 10, 15, 20 years etc....

Nobody should be allowed to make profit on essential services. Anything that a person needs for the most basic standard of living shouldn't be unattainable because rich people care more about money they don't need.

Came here to say this. Utilities, public transport, communications, health, social care. Most of those now run for profit. Makes my blood boil.

oh and celebs and influencers being given free stuff all the time. not sure how you’d stop that though 😅

Excess package just no need for it all, obviously gives false impression so manufacturer's can obviously charge more and bad for environment too,

Brownfield sites should allways be considered first buildings projects not green field sites as obviously needs for environmental concerns issues,

Town centres development should allways be a balanced of heritage buildings and contemporary modern buildings and how they work in balance harmony together

They should often consult with general public often too like mandatory too.

Harry threads.

Any mention of those two. If I go onto the website of a broadsheet, I don't expect to have to scroll past a load of B list celebrity gossip just to get to the serious news stories.

Yeah cos I'd love to walk 15 miles to hospital with my 3 month old twins and my son on o2 for his check up 🙄

Annoyingwurringnoise · 08/01/2023 23:14

Cities and towns should have a certain number of units reserved for local independent shops, at affordable rents for their owners. Fed up of every high Street and city center having the same old shite chains.

likewise there should only be a limited number of takeaways allowed per square mile. Same with betting shops.

I'm asking how this could be legislated for. Here in Scotland the SNP think 16 year olds have the maturity to vote and can consent to changing their gender identity Hmm So what can 16 year olds do? Here, they can leave school and start full time work, they can vote, they can get married.

So do you want to raise the age of consent or as PP suggested have a staggered age of consent? I can't see how that would work.

I have a few friends who have been with the same person since high school, got married and had children. One was 16 and her boyfriend was 20. They are expecting their second child now. She's 35 and they've only ever been with each other. If someone had told me at 17 that I couldn't be with my partner and had to find someone of a maximum age limit that wouldn't have gone down very well.

If you are not mature til you're 20s then surely you shouldn't be allowed to do any of the above until then.

whatsdiswhatsdat · 08/01/2023 22:24

How could this work? When I was 17 I was in a relationship with a 40 year old man. We stayed together for 10 years. We're no longer together and I'm now married to someone else and madly in love with them but that relationship was a wonderful time in my life. I was very happy and wasn't groomed.

🤮🤮🤮

whatsdiswhatsdat · 08/01/2023 23:17

@YouWithoutEnd

Hmm

Fantastic demonstration of the fact that I was more mature at 17 than you are now.

When you choose to stand for election you are asking people to vote for you as their full time political representative and that is what you should do not do it part time whilst doing another job and being paid for full time hours as an MP plus being paid for the 2nd job. If that means Dr's etc can't keep there licence without some retraining (assuming that they want to go back to there old job) then that should be part of the decision to stand for election.

What about ministers? That's basically a second job that they have to do in addition to their work for their constituency.

I'd prefer it if MPs had current experience of real jobs. Just enough to keep them grounded.

Playgrounds without wheelchair accessible play equipment. Three parks near us have been refurbished in the last 18 months, not one bit of accessible equipment. It’s not that hard.

Whatwhatwhatnow · 08/01/2023 23:28

Disposable swim nappies. Even if you can't be bothered with reusable regular nappies, I really can't see any excuse to use disposable swim nappies.

Shops being able to choose how to size women's clothes. The sizes should be standard so I can shop online and know if I'm a 10 or 16. Also, women's jeans must have proper pockets.

Agree-and all clothes should be available in any size that anyone wants to buy, but the manufacturers should be able to charge a bit more for larger sizes to cover the cost of using more fabric.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/01/2023 23:40

I haven't RTFT but several of yours annoyed me:

Petrol should be the same price from a retailer no matter where you buy it from. That's a monopoly and doesn't work unless it's a state owned resource.

A Council should not be able to get away with paying for damage caused by potholes by saying 'We are aware and it's due to be fixed'
Councils have been destroyed by cuts and if you sue them, it will be worse. Lobby central government to prioritise infrastructure.

If someone is sentenced to life for murder, this should mean for the rest of their life, not to be released after 10, 15, 20 years etc....
There are about 20 reasons this is a terrible idea. I will just mention a few:

  1. Murder has a low recidivism rate meaning reoffending (therefore public safety) is not a motivation for long sentences. That leaves punishment, revenge, discouragement and rehabilitation as justifications for one sentences. Punishment and revenge are really poor things to hang a justice system on. Discouragement would be MASSIVELY better served by dealing with the main causes of murder, for example domestic violence. Rehabilitation is met with a 10 year stint.
  2. Life licences are very useful for control. Everyone sentenced to life is on a licence until they die, which means if they misbehave they can be recalled, ensuring good behaviour.
3..Conversely, if you lock someone up for life there is zero motivation to behave, making prison guards' jobs much more dangerous and meaning that violence in prison will increase.
  1. Longer, harsher sentences make jurors less happy to convict.
  2. There are others, I suspect you aren't interested!

Bags on seats on the bus to stop people sitting down.

People not booking seats on aeroplanes then expecting you to move to accommodate their needs.

Cyclists not adhering the rules (especially deliveroo type services)

Extortionate service charges on apartments

Lying about "Brexit benefits"

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 08/01/2023 23:45

People with drive ways/ parking spaces/ garages should be fined if they do not use them to park their car/van etc etc. (beady eye on several neighbours). Planning permission to convert said spaces should also never be granted.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 08/01/2023 23:56

Controversial, elderly drivers and powerful cars. Urgh! I remember my df driving a powerful car and it was more than he could handle. Took some persuading to get him to drive a smaller slower car. I’ve seen so many elderly having accidents and killing people. There’s a reason why they offer bus passes too.

Fireworks I agree with. These should only be for public displays and never sold to individuals.

Hala bacon is any non-pork meat cured in a similar way to bacon and slaughtered, butchered, and cured according to Islamic guidelines. This ranges from turkey bacon to beef bacon.

A just-as-delicious halal alternative to pork bacon, our quality beef bacon crisps up just as well, offering those well known smoky, salty notes with every bite. With flavourful fat streaks running along the top of the rasher, our halal bacon offers the same wonderful bacon-y flavour that we all know and love.

I disagree about utility bills. The majority of people (without a LD) should be able to carry out the basic arithmetic needed to understand bills with the aid of a calculator. No water isn't sold in a shop in cubic meters. Why would it be?
There are numerous classes for those lacking in financial fluency and functional skills. Most are free
