Following on from the petrol price thread (and in true Victor Meldrew style) what do you think shouldn't be allowed......I'll kick off with the following.

Petrol should be the same price from a retailer no matter where you buy it from

Nothing should ever be double taxed (Petrol again....Fuel Duty and VAT!!!)

All displayed prices for anything should be inclusive of VAT

A Council should not be able to get away with paying for damage caused by potholes by saying 'We are aware and it's due to be fixed'

Electricity and Gas prices should be easy to understand

The same goes for Water (who last bought a cubic metre of water from a shop when they wanted a drink?)

If someone is sentenced to life for murder, this should mean for the rest of their life, not to be released after 10, 15, 20 years etc....

Going to people's houses when they have an uncontrollable dog.
I'm trying to sit having a coffee when your annoying excitable dog is jumping up on me on the sofa trying to knock said coffee out my hands. Please don't do the annoying head tilt whilst saying "I think he likes you/he's happy to see you/aww bless him" whilst feebly telling him to get down and he's ignoring you. It's fucking annoying.
Not everyone thinks the sun shines out your dogs bum like you do.
He's not cute, he's badly trained.
He doesn't like me, he has FOMO as he's not getting any attention for 30 seconds and wants to be in my face.
It's not funny either, as one of us could get scolded from the hot drink whilst he's trying to mount me.
And no we're not 'dancing', I'm trying to stop your dog ripping my clothes and scratching at me with his too sharp claws.

But house price inflation is about the only capital gain which is not taxed in any way in the UK! Inheritance tax on house price gains is 100% fair!

Alcohol at the airport or on a plane.

I'm saying this as someone who had a very unpleasant (and frightening) flight because of a drunk!

Following on from a recent post about Londoners commuting to work ...

It was suggested that tourists be banned on public transport during rush hour!

Wheelie bins left outside houses.

They are such an eye sore!

So where do I live until I can afford one as my landlord can't own my house to rent it to me?

Your landlord should not use you to pay his mortgage. If he wants to own more than one property he should buy it outright!!

Men having those stupid tufts of hair just below their bottom lip, with no other facial hair.

Bald men with a very long beard, that has those rings clamped around it.

Urgh yes agree.

People should be breathalysed before being allowed to fly.

Parking spaces should be made bigger for modern cars. Too many spaces aren't fit for purpose any more

I’d like to see the parking spaces painted diagonally, like in America, as they’re easier to get in and out of.

I disagree about utility bills. The majority of people (without a LD) should be able to carry out the basic arithmetic needed to understand bills with the aid of a calculator. No water isn't sold in a shop in cubic meters. Why would it be?
There are numerous classes for those lacking in financial fluency and functional skills. Most are free

Please tell me where these classes are?

Many local authorities have been forced to make swathing cuts to informal education courses as well as formal education.

Just because you find it easy doesn't mean it is easy for everyone.
Simplifying utility bills would be really useful as would clear explanations of where the money we pay goes.
I doubt that this government wants the public to see how much profit is made from the bare necessities of life.

Celebrity game shows. They have enough privilege in their bloody lives, let us have a go! I really want to have a go at Tipping Point and would happily give any winnings to charity - I just want a go!! Ditto almost any game show!!

I agree. The only problems I have ever experienced on a flight have been from passengers who have had too much to drink. I'm sure it would make life easier for staff as well as other passengers if they didn't have to deal with this.

Second homes-until everyone who wants a first home has got one.

How would you know when this was?
Where do people on temporary contracts live? I live near a very big hospital and a lot of the doctors are on rotation etc. Where do they live under your idea?
Not everyone who rents actually wants to buy

RainbowCat26 · 09/01/2023 16:00

There should be some kind of incentive offered for old (closed) derelict pubs to be converted into something. Even flats would be better than looking at a crumbling old building that will be very unlikely to ever become a pub again.

MugginsOverEre · 09/01/2023 16:05

Fake pockets in trousers for women.

DH's eyes were well and truly opened when we went shopping for some work trousers for me. For my job they need to be black, not tight fitting and must have at least two pockets.

The huge selection of 30+ trousers in a big clothes shop, all slightly differing styles (but still black) had maybe two or three with pockets that weren't fake. He'd hold one up to ask what I thought and then scratch his head at the stupid fake pockets before putting them back with a defeated sigh.

JudgeRudy · 09/01/2023 16:35

These classes are free. skillsforlife.campaign.gov.uk/?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=AdultSkills23_202301_0_All Most HE colleges offer free functional skills classes.
I understand a lot of people don't understand them....that's because they've don't been taught and many people have a real fear of Maths. I just think it's better to unskill people.

job adverts that say 'competitive salary and benefits'
NO tell me in ££.

The bedrooms in new builds, should have to have inbuilt wardrobes to a minimum size. It's appalling that builders can get away with calling a room a bedroom, when if a bed is put in it, there is no room for any other furniture.

headache · 09/01/2023 16:55

I would make school open 8-5pm, 8-9pm would be breakfast club every child would get a free breakfast then time to play and relax with friends before school, 3-5pm would be hobbies and sports clubs, all children would be given the opportunity to participate in sports. This would provide childcare and help the obesity crisis. Parents would pay a very small fee for this or it would be free for low income families.

fitzwilliamdarcy · 09/01/2023 16:57

Having kids without a licence. I realise it's extremely contentious and everyone will get very upset with me but there are so, so many people who are just lowkey bad at it, lowkey fucking their kids up, lowkey creating all sorts of problems for the future.

The fact that you have to basically be near-enough perfect to adopt but any old arsehole can decide to bring a dependent, vulnerable human being into the world that is entirely reliant on them, and nobody even monitors the situation unless there's a lucky break and someone spots that the kid's being abused (and sometimes even that doesn't work) - it drives me mad.

I have no way of enforcing any of it but I hate it.

And dogs. If you have a dog your number 1 job is to ensure it never - ever - comes within 10 metres of anyone else. They should always be on a lead on footpaths too.

None of the pavements here are 10m wide. How would I be able to walk my (on the lead, under control) small dog?

fitzwilliamdarcy · 09/01/2023 16:59

Also, there should be some recognition from some political party that single people are "hard-working families" and might actually need some help from time to time even if they don't have kids. They don't need not to starve or have a roof over their head less because they're on their own.
