Things that shouldn't be allowed....

Following on from the petrol price thread (and in true Victor Meldrew style) what do you think shouldn't be allowed......I'll kick off with the following.

Petrol should be the same price from a retailer no matter where you buy it from

Nothing should ever be double taxed (Petrol again....Fuel Duty and VAT!!!)

All displayed prices for anything should be inclusive of VAT

A Council should not be able to get away with paying for damage caused by potholes by saying 'We are aware and it's due to be fixed'

Electricity and Gas prices should be easy to understand

The same goes for Water (who last bought a cubic metre of water from a shop when they wanted a drink?)

If someone is sentenced to life for murder, this should mean for the rest of their life, not to be released after 10, 15, 20 years etc....

This might sound petty, but websites requiring information or passwords to be entered should not be allowed to tell you you've made an error (basically calling you a big thick thicky) all the time whilst you're doing it.

If I have to input a standard 16-digit debit card number, I get infuriated when it 'informs' me by flashing up a big red error message 15 times that I haven't entered a valid card number. By all means have a progress bar, if you must, but do not patronise and repeatedly lie to me that I've done it wrongly, when I just haven't finished doing it yet.

Parking spaces should be made bigger for modern cars. Too many spaces aren't fit for purpose any more

Do you realise that f2f contact 9-5 with children 4 days a week almost makes up a teachers TOTAL yearly contracted hours (sparing just 25 minutes a week).

So this means that any work completed outside the classroom will be unpaid labour by the teacher.

This has obviously touched a nerve and the last thing I want to do is upset you, on a silly thread about what we would change if we could wave a magic wand.

Both in the countries which do this pattern as standard, and in my made up scenario above, teachers would be paid for the fifth day working.

The UK is very much an outlier in not paying teachers for time outside the classroom and I agree with you that this isn't fair.

Yes, this. It enrages me. Surely most people will try to do something online in the first place?

Of course they will. 99% of people who call helpdesks have done so because the website is completely useless.

BellaCiao1 · 09/01/2023 11:34

@wildseas thanks. I don't disagree with some of your plan. I think f2f hours should be reduced in schools and would have a really good knock on for children's attainment as teaching and resources would be much better.

JudyLemon · 09/01/2023 11:38

I think children should not be allowed to become famous. I'm not sure on the logistics of this but I don't think parents should be able to push their children onto the path to stardom and paparazzi should not be able to take photos of children for a start.

On this note, people who are insta famous posting every intimate detail of their children's lives should be a crime. It's complete violation of privacy plus it is really dangerous.

Cyclists in bus lanes - I rarely use the peasant wagon, but when I do it seems to crawl along stuck behind a cyclist.

Middle class, kept yummy mummies should be forced into labour and forced to use public transport to get there 😂

Mabelface · 09/01/2023 11:51

Meanderthals, especially at train stations
Not using headphones in public places
Mushrooms. I'm veggie and loathe them and they seem to have become a staple for veggie or vegan meals.

whatthefactuall · 09/01/2023 11:55

Stopping in a doorway when there’s a line of people walking behind you trying to also walk through that doorway. Supermarket is a prime example of this. Huge line of people behind them and as soon as they get through the doors, they stop, blocking the entrance, whilst they dig around in their handbag for their shopping list, or stop to gawp around looking bewildered at what their next move should be. Just move to one side!

Absolutely! Posting every aspect of their child’s life - from the first scan down to posing pictures of them eating their dinner , these parents violate their child’s privacy, who is not able to consent. Had it been my mum and dad doing that I would have been utterly livid. They can make memories in private without having to post every second of their life online.

Men having those stupid tufts of hair just below their bottom lip, with no other facial hair.

Yes! Also men wearing skinny jeans that are so tight you can see if they’re circumcised or not, and also the skinny jeans with the shoes and no socks combo 🤮

Thepeopleversuswork · 09/01/2023 12:10

People who spray out inane and spiteful comments on Mumsnet about the "damage" done to children from working mothers need mandatory life sentences.

"I didn't have children just to farm them out to a childminder" and "You'll never get the time back" are the two most serious offences. 30 years minimum.
I'd also give long custodial sentences to people who post: "No one ever said on their deathbed they wish they'd worked more."

High crimes against intelligence.

Dreamsoffreedomjoyandpeace · 09/01/2023 12:20

Chopping down trees unless there is proof they’re damaging foundations etc. That includes chopping them down to make way for building houses.

Plastic grass.

Ugly shopfronts. All shopfronts should be clean, painted in tasteful colours and have fairy lights.

Any dog that is capable of seriously injuring a child (or smaller dogs).

Far more severe penalties for not picking up dog poo.

Dreamsoffreedomjoyandpeace · 09/01/2023 12:22

Oh and white socks, pants and face masks.

People who insist on reversing into parking spaces and hold everyone up. I don’t know why but it annoys me soooo much.

It's safer. Your convenience does not trump the safety of others.

Flaunch · 09/01/2023 12:29

Allowing foreign investors to
own our energy infrastructure or buy property which they intend to leave empty.

louderthan · 09/01/2023 12:30

The cost of a train ticket should be the same regardless of when you buy it (ie get rid of advance fares).
The cost of a train ticket should be roughly equivalent to average petrol cost per mile for length of journey.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 09/01/2023 12:34

Brownfield sites before green space
Second homes and empty building assessed for housing use before just throwing another 100 odd houses up
Electric cars being forced on people with no thought to rural areas and those with no space to charge at home or those with jobs who require high car use e.g. community nurses/carers
green agenda being forced down the throats of those with the least power to make change
Cats being allowed free roam
dogs defecating in public spaces without being picked up
every tom dick and Harry who want a dog being allowed one even if unable to care for them

yes to the food related ones I remember things like Cadbury, Dr Pepper etc being so much nicer when I was younger, it all just tastes artificial. Thank god for
lindt their chocolate bars are
divine.

Second homes-until everyone who wants a first home has got one.

So where do I live until I can afford one as my landlord can't own my house to rent it to me?

Harrysarseinthedogbowl · 09/01/2023 12:49

Wind chimes.

erikbloodaxe · 09/01/2023 12:52

Undertakers.

Death shouldn't be profitable to anyone.

Burial/Cremation should be state funded.

eurochick · 09/01/2023 12:55

Being permitted to build homes that are not carbon neutral.

Being permitted to build on greenfield sites.
