Things that shouldn't be allowed....

Following on from the petrol price thread (and in true Victor Meldrew style) what do you think shouldn't be allowed......I'll kick off with the following.

Petrol should be the same price from a retailer no matter where you buy it from

Nothing should ever be double taxed (Petrol again....Fuel Duty and VAT!!!)

All displayed prices for anything should be inclusive of VAT

A Council should not be able to get away with paying for damage caused by potholes by saying 'We are aware and it's due to be fixed'

Electricity and Gas prices should be easy to understand

The same goes for Water (who last bought a cubic metre of water from a shop when they wanted a drink?)

If someone is sentenced to life for murder, this should mean for the rest of their life, not to be released after 10, 15, 20 years etc....

Netflix shouldn’t be allowed to advertise shows that have already been cancelled after their first season. Sick of spotting something, getting into it and finding out they’ve already decided not to renew!

KimberleyClark · 09/01/2023 09:00

Road tax shouldn't be simply by the size of the vehicle, but rather based on roads you use (city roads & motorways cost more: we would save a lot).

Are you saying people in rural areas should pay less road tax because they live in rural areas, even though they use their cars more because they have fewer facilities within walking distance and poor public transport?

All these bloody threads on the royal family. I’ve no interest in them at all and the vast majority of trending now is about one of them. Is there anyway to get rid?

I've hidden the whole royal family topic. So much better.

How exactly are the government going to monitor and administer that? There’s a system that would cost a lot more than it could possibly bring in, would mean people have to keep checking to see that their charges are correct/have to keep making extra payments if they drive on the wrong road, and would be awash with people challenging charges because they didn’t drive there when the system says they did etc.

Then there’s all the unintended outcomes. All the rat runs that would emerge as people use much less suitable and previously quiet roads to get around having to pay for the motorway/because they’re not allowed to use the motorway.

People who insist on reversing into parking spaces and hold everyone up. I don’t know why but it annoys me soooo much.

@DontStopMeNow7 - reversing in is much safer.

SeatonCarew · 09/01/2023 09:08

Stamp duty. It discourages mobility in the housing market and moving is already expensive enough.

People who drive into a parking space and then take ages pulling out because they can't see if any cars are coming...... Or reverse out anyway regardless and nearly cause a crash. There's a reason you are taught to reverse park and it's part of the test.

110% this! Why should people who move more often get hammered by tax that people sitting in a house for 50 years that is no longer suitable for their needs avoid it? It makes no sense whatsoever.

Does not help with the ones where it’s in AIBU because they want a poll. Or the rash of AIBU ‘to not be interested in Harry’.

If you’re not interested, why are you starting a discussion thread? And putting it where you know loads of people who are actually fed up with this will definitely see it.

But people don’t always move house because they need to. Sometimes they just fancy a different area. And just because people don’t move often doesn,’t mean their house is unsuitable for their needs.

Newspapers telling deliberate lies or having obvious political/ownership bias. They should be held to the same standards as broadcast media. Free press my absolute arse.

You are told to reverse into a parking space when doing lone worker training. Much easier to get away in the event of a problem.
Plus, reversing out holds people up too, so I can’t see the difference

wildseas · 09/01/2023 09:21

School hours should be changed to 9-5 four days a week with a free supervised dropping off/picking up time available between 8-9 and 5-6.

Teacher should be paid for 5 days - 4 days in school on the longer hours and one from home for prep/marking/training etc which would make their jobs more do-able and solve the recruitment crisis.

Older children would still have the same amount of homework and would use the 5th day to complete it instead of having to work in the evenings.

At the same time employers should be obliged to offer all jobs with a 4-day option unless they have a registered exemption.

Any additional costs could be covered by the huge increase in taxes paid by parents being able to afford to go back to work.

Quite! It's far safer to reverse in if you can then drive out. Reversing out of a space in a supermarket car park is pretty hazardous, though it's generally due the dozy pedestrians who suddenly appear behind the car when I'm part way out of the space.

And whose going to look after the kids on the 5th day when the parents are working ?
Plus, kids left without supervision can get into trouble, thus increasing the need for the emergency services and SS.

But presumably every school would need to have the same day off, otherwise you're potentially looking for childcare for several children over different days. In which case tons of parents will want say Friday off which will completely screw over the last person in the team to request it / anyone else ever wanting that day off

blacktreacles · 09/01/2023 09:34

there’s way too much homework for children, especially teenagers. it leaves no time for hobbies or family time.

Either the parent themselves (with my new 4 day rule :-) ) or a childcare provider, the same as eg during holidays etc.

Tony’s Chocalonely - you can pick some up at Sainsbury’s.

Lovely chocolate, and ethical.

I think it tastes worse than kinnerton and is ridiculously expensive.

mummymeister · 09/01/2023 09:44

retrospective planning applications. people where I live just build anything they want. they wait until they are found out, which can be a few months, then they put in a planning application before enforcement action can be taken. it takes months to be determined and meanwhile they just carry on with their build. in my area over 80% of retrospective applications are granted so whats the point of the planning process in the first place.

Yes, every school would be the same days.

This would be the difficulty with some jobs, and is a downside to the system. Although, in my opinion, less of a downside than the current daily 3pm finish.

Other jobs without a public-facing element would just let more people be off on that day of course.

But why do we tax people for moving house? Why not tax all people living in big houses, rather than just the ones that perhaps have jobs which see them moving around often. It’s a very, very weird basis for taxation.

stamp duty is one of the oldest taxes, and it was a charge made by the state for them physically putting an official stamp on the change of deeds, and registering the transfer of ownership. The reasonable cost of amending the deeds ought to be no more than about £200.
