Things that shouldn't be allowed....

Following on from the petrol price thread (and in true Victor Meldrew style) what do you think shouldn't be allowed......I'll kick off with the following.

Petrol should be the same price from a retailer no matter where you buy it from

Nothing should ever be double taxed (Petrol again....Fuel Duty and VAT!!!)

All displayed prices for anything should be inclusive of VAT

A Council should not be able to get away with paying for damage caused by potholes by saying 'We are aware and it's due to be fixed'

Electricity and Gas prices should be easy to understand

The same goes for Water (who last bought a cubic metre of water from a shop when they wanted a drink?)

If someone is sentenced to life for murder, this should mean for the rest of their life, not to be released after 10, 15, 20 years etc....

Patents not paying child maintenance to support their child/children, regardless of whether they are self employed, unemployed, living in a property with other dependants etc etc etc. You had the child, now pay up. The system in the UK is a disgrace.

Definitely. Nearly every time I see a mum on a TV clip who is struggling with poverty, it's a single woman. Where are the fathers who should be helping with child care and maintenance? It takes 2 to make a baby and to finance its upbringing.

That would be amazing! Sizing names L, XL, XXL should be adapted too - size 14 being 'large' doesn't sit right with me.

Don't buy chinese stuff on Amazon then! I was horrified when I bought some cycling shorts recently that a 14 translated to XXL!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 09/01/2023 09:59

Re water, OP, I just checked with dh, who worked for some time in the water sector, and the current cost here* of a cubic meter (1000 litres) - including the cost of waste water, sewage, etc. - is £4. So half a litre from the cold tap costs you 0.002p.

*Thames Water area, I know it’s not the same everywhere.

Having economic growth as the only priority. Quality of life for people should be a priority as well. We are not robots, we need to live well.

Badger1970 · 09/01/2023 10:05

Rural development.

Fuck off with your toddler designed housing estates that were formerly green fields, with the 4 extra cars for each house, driven by people who can't drive down country lanes or understand what passing places are, and people who then start kicking off at farm smells/tractors and no takeaways that deliver out here on the local FB page. And don't even start me on the dog owners who "dress" their dogs in fully waterproof suits so that they can't get dirty and have to go to the groomers Hmm Stick to the towns where you belong. Thanks.

That hard plastic packaging that you have to cut open with scissors then (literally) tear into with your hands to get to the product.

Piercings on babies.

Almost all skincare brands - more specifically, the ones who sell perfume/alcohol filled gunk at ridiculously marked up prices. There are about 3 products in Boots that a decent dermatologist would actually recommend (out of hundreds of pointless, or often even damaging, alternatives.)

Face2facet · 09/01/2023 10:10

Why do councils let developers get away with big housing projects with no infrastructure to go alongside. How about granting planning permission only if they agree to build enough schools, libraries, GPs and play parks to go with the increased population. Also get some council housing out of them at the same time.

You are told to reverse into a parking space when doing lone worker training. Much easier to get away in the event of a problem.
Plus, reversing out holds people up too, so I can’t see the difference

People who don't like it when drivers reverse into a space are just jealous because they are shit at reverse parking!

Other than the recovery from surgery ones.

I'm with Marmite on the Tony's chocolony. It might be ethical but it's revolting.

Cat haters. That crop up on everyone of these threads.

Intolerance and getting worked up over such minor things as parking, bins, animals etc. Sweating small stuff like it matters.

onyttig · 09/01/2023 10:30

Are teachers supposed to be working 7.45-6.15, 4 days a week and then 9-5 on a Friday?

Or just 9-5 every day with contact time continuous for 4 of them?

I don’t think that’s going to make teaching more appealing.

Nor is the nationwide lack of school as childcare on a Friday going to be popular with employers.

zingally · 09/01/2023 10:37

Lorries over-taking each other on motorways.

Fuckin' MOVE.

HyggeTygge · 09/01/2023 10:45

Not displaying prices in shops. I hardly ever buy from department store beauty counters now because I hate asking what everything costs. Far easier to go online but I know some beauty counter staff depend on commission.

School hours should be changed to 9-5 four days a week with a free supervised dropping off/picking up time available between 8-9 and 5-6.

Teacher should be paid for 5 days - 4 days in school on the longer hours and one from home for prep/marking/training etc which would make their jobs more do-able and solve the recruitment crisis.

Older children would still have the same amount of homework and would use the 5th day to complete it instead of having to work in the evenings.

At the same time employers should be obliged to offer all jobs with a 4-day option unless they have a registered exemption.

Any additional costs could be covered by the huge increase in taxes paid by parents being able to afford to go back to work.

School or childcare is it?

An idea from someone who has presumably never worked in a school. First of all, it is almost impossible to get much out of children on an average day after lunchtime, I can only imagine how it would be extending that for another 2 hours.

I notice you say that teachers can work 4 days but get paid for 5, then use their Friday (or day off) to catch up on planning and marking to alleviate the work pressures. So teachers aren't actually getting a day off then? As last time I checked marking and planning constitutes work.

Recorded messages when you call a customer service line saying: "Have you thought of trying our website?"

Yes, this. It enrages me. Surely most people will try to do something online in the first place?

wildseas · 09/01/2023 10:55

I haven't worked in a school, so no I'm in no ways an expert on the UK school system.

But, I have lived and sent my kids to school in a country where this pattern is the norm and it is so so so much easier both for teachers (as they have a full day mid week for planning, making, training etc); for schools (because they aren't continually trying to find cover for teachers to do prep when kids are in school) and for working parents.

I haven't said that teachers would work for 4 days and be paid for 5 - I've said they'd work 4 days in school and one from home which would be for planning/marking etc (ie part of their job not something they have to fit in on the evenings/weekends)

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/01/2023 11:03

Restaurants should have to provide a vegetarian and a vegan option, not just use a vegan option to cover both bases. I love cheese and find restaurant vegan food so often stodgy and boring

Even steakhouses and vegan restaurants?!

onyttig · 09/01/2023 11:05

Is cheese an absolutely requirement of all vegetarian meals?

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 09/01/2023 11:10

MPs should also have to have lived for a minimum of 5 years in the constituency they hope to win. Being airlifted into a 'safe' seat to which you have no connection at all is ridiculous - almost as ridiculous as the unthinking people who actually vote you in to it en masse.

If we must have stamp duty, it should only be payable on the difference of the house prices - potentially with a refund if you downsize. Why should you be penalised for moving to a near-identical house in a different town (or indeed in the same one); and why on earth should somebody having to downsize owing to personal financial circumstances have to pay a tax for the 'privilege'? Nobody would ever suggest that people having had four equally-paid jobs in 20 years should pay a lot more in income tax than somebody who has just had one job (also paying the same amount as theirs) in that time. Same principle.

Do you realise that f2f contact 9-5 with children 4 days a week almost makes up a teachers TOTAL yearly contracted hours (sparing just 25 minutes a week).

So this means that any work completed outside the classroom will be unpaid labour by the teacher.

QuertyGirl · 09/01/2023 11:11

@thesnow

Parking is big stuff though.

People parking on pavements, cycle lanes and back streets forces vulnerable people into the traffic.
