Have you always said it that way @Verbena17

Since living in Germany in the early 2000’s, I’ve also called it Lee-dl…..not
lid-ul.

but surely we always do this to a certain extent. i mean we say Paris not Pa ree (unless you are a dick).

😂

allthelittleangelsriseupriseup · 07/01/2023 19:36

However, if you live in York, Nestle is pronounced Rowntrees.😉

FartWrangler · 07/01/2023 19:28

I don't know why this is such a big deal? Do you say it often OP?

I don't know why, but this tickled me @zurala

You might say it from time to time if you used to have one. At least, our present car is 'the car' but former cars are 'the Nissan' 'the Peugeot' etc.

I swear everyone used to say Pew-jo for Purgeot, then it became Per-jo and now I keep hearing Pew-jo again! And I don't know what I should say!

We just call them Pugs. 😂

PinkButtercups · 07/01/2023 19:45

Not going to lie I pronounce Nestle, Nest-Lay. Always have.

PinkButtercups · 07/01/2023 19:48

Also pronounce Ikea, eye-key-ah.

Also any supermarkets I add an S on so Asda's, Tesco's. I never realised I did until my mum pointed it out as it annoys her. I'm not changing it now. It is what it is, we move 🤣.

allthelittleangelsriseupriseup · 07/01/2023 19:49

We have a Dacia sandero stepway (silly name, brilliant car), The salesman pronounced it Dachya, the manager pronounced it Dachya, we pronounced it Dachya - so it completely threw me when I booked it in for its first service and the service manager pronounced it Dassha!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 07/01/2023 19:50

I have no fecking clue how to pronounce Prius

amicissimma · 07/01/2023 19:52

Bagzzz · 07/01/2023 17:54

In Germany Lidl is pronounced Lee dl not li dl. Given the UK slogan “Lidl on Price” fits better with the pronunciation in UK I don’t they’ll change at the moment

The meedle of Leedl, then?

Or... The Asda

No absolutely it wasn't in the 70s as far as my memory goes (happy to be disproved).

The Milky bar kid is strong and tough, but only the best is good enough, the creamiest milk the somethinist bar, nessals milky bar'.

"The creamiest milk, the whitest bar, the goodness that is Milky Bar. Nestle's Milky Bar"

IIRC

And yes - it was "Ness - uls", not "Nest - uls or "Nest - lay's"

MandaLynn · 07/01/2023 19:57

While we're at it, could you start pronouncing "Nike" correctly? That ones always bugged me since moving to the UK from the US

BarbaraofSeville · 07/01/2023 18:55

And apparently the medium sized hatchback they sell is an Oct ah via not an Oct ay via.

They could have started off teaching us how it's pronounced rather than let everyone get used to the incorrect anglicised version.

This!

We aren't idiots - just very set in our ways . . .

I used to live abroad in a village called Callao Salvaje.

I loved all the pronunciations that were wrong.

But the best were the British people telling me I was pronouncing it wrong ConfusedGrin

Kallay-o Salvage? I'd say it Cah-yow Sal-vakhey

Do you say Tena Reef or Tenneh reefeh?

LookItsMeAgain · 07/01/2023 20:03

@SaintLoy - the other way to pronounce it might be eye-key-yah (run them together).

@ItWasDobbinAtTheMareAndSpare - yes! with Bruce Willis either being stuck at the airport in a snow storm or at the Nakatomi Plaza building while saying it!

Emotionalsupportviper · 07/01/2023 20:04

I've always pronounced it "Nai - key" because it is the Greek goddess of victory

I still haven't got over changing "Marathons" to "Snickers".

I mean Snickers !! If you want a better name then at least find a better one.

Snickers, snickers
Keep a spare one up your knickers....

That’s just going to make a mess………!

LookItsMeAgain · 07/01/2023 20:05

@KirstenBlest - I thought you were discussing a certain female sanitary product there for a moment 😂and not a holiday location! 😆

ItWasDobbinAtTheMareAndSpare · 07/01/2023 20:05

I’ve always pronounced (and heard pronounced by others, aside from their advertising) IKEA as Eye-Keer
