@viques

I said that the other day!

Irritating

5foot5 · 07/01/2023 17:57

I don't know how to break this to you gently, but I just found a recording of the advert from 1961 and they did say Nestlé.

Hadjab · 07/01/2023 17:58

You’re bored, aren’t you?

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 07/01/2023 17:58

I was coming on to say 'Nessles' Milky Bar.

Lidl once had a go at pronouncing themselves Leedle (I assume the original German rendering) but it seemed to die a death.

Not quite the same but I remember when Cif was Jif - apparently Jif meant something rude in many countries where it was sold.

But fair enough for Hyundai and others to stop dumbing down on some notion that Brits can't cope with a 'forrin' name.

Oh I meant to quote @TeenDivided but quote didn't work.

Not in the Milky Bar ads!

QueenOfThorns · 07/01/2023 18:01

I wasn’t around in 1961, but it was definitely pronounced Nessels about 20 years later!

mum2jakie · 07/01/2023 18:03

Thanks for proving it @PlaitBilledDuckyPuss ! I was trying to sing the words in my head.

I think the OP refers to the current Hyundai advert which is pointing out how the brand should be pronounced. They were happy for us to spend our money and mispronounce the brand name for all these years!

Hidingawaytoday · 07/01/2023 18:03

I'm not fussed about most of these... but if Cadbury's ever change the pronunciation of Creme Egg from Cream Egg to Crem Egg, it will probably result in me leaving my husband. His smugness will be unbearable.

@PlaitBilledDuckyPuss What? Is it not still Jif? Does it still come in a little lemon?

Ah, no I mean the kitchen cleaning product Grin. Jif lemons as far as I know still exist although the lemons are less realistic than they used to be.

You’re thinking of the actual lemon juice that we squirt on our pancakes. That’s still the same. The Jif/Cif that’s being talked about is the cleaning product.

GrouchyKiwi · 07/01/2023 18:06

Cif is still Jif in NZ. Took me ages to get used to Cif over here. Grin

Spanielsarepainless · 07/01/2023 18:06

I remember when Marseilles was pronounced Marsails not Marsay.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 07/01/2023 18:06

Cif when it was Jif

5foot5 · 07/01/2023 18:11

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 07/01/2023 18:06

Cif when it was Jif

So presumably Jif lemon is only sold in the UK then otherwise it would still be offending people in all the same countries where the cleaning product is used.

DoNotGetADog · 07/01/2023 18:12

I remember a Hyundai advert a few years ago where they did pronounce it correctly (as in the new advert) so I already knew how to pronounce it, but then they seemed to go back to the anglicised version??

DoNotGetADog · 07/01/2023 18:13

And yes, they 100% definitely used to say “Nessles Milky Bar!”

We're probably the only country with such terrible palates that we use those things in preference to readily available and easily squeezed real lemons Grin

And, yes, I include myself in that.

stopthebarking · 07/01/2023 18:17

Just go on pronouncing it as you choose. I very much doubt anyone really cares one way or the other. And if they do, so what?

Yes, I doubt that if you went into your local dealership and enquired about buying a 'high und die' the salesperson's reply would be 'You what?'

Ninjapot · 07/01/2023 18:24

Question me and a mate were pondering a couple of days ago - were Dacias (Datcha) ever Dayseah?

Isn't that how captain slow pronounces it (I forgot his real name)

Theunamedcat · 07/01/2023 18:28

We can't even agree on aldi pronunciation my mom calls it "all"di we call it "al"di

No clue

DappledThings · 07/01/2023 18:28

It is really weird this bothers anyone.

Someone mentioned Skoda. Which my Czech speaking mother has had me pronouncing correctly for years. Nice others are catching up!
