Ikea is supposed to be pronounced as follows:

ick-kay-yah (run together)

That’s a new one on me. I know it’s pronounced like that in France. But I remember the advert ‘Come to Ikeeeyaah’…. And the Nessles Milky bar ad.

Manufacturers change pronunciation eg Ford KA.

Falalalafel · 07/01/2023 18:30

First time I heard Eye-key-ah I thought it was a bit weird. IK is for Ingvar Kamprad so the I is pronounced as the I in his name, E is for Elmtaryd where he grew up and A is for Agunnaryd which is close to Elmtaryd. In the middle of nowhere basically. 🌲🪵🌲

Butchyrestingface · 07/01/2023 18:31

Is this about Harry and Meghan?

whynotwhatknot · 07/01/2023 18:36

why did it take so long to change jif to cif if it was so rude

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 07/01/2023 18:36

What irked me slightly about this is that Hyundai have used the old pronunciation - the one that is so entirely unrecognisable in their new advert - in their own previous adverts! So it seems pretty rude to criticise people for using the pronunciation they have been using.

barbrahunter · 07/01/2023 18:36

Re the Milky Bar ad, when I was a kid I never understood what the kid meant when he said the Milky Bars were (sic) 'on me'. I think it's quite a sophisticated phrase for an idea that he's going to give everyone a free bar because he won at the fruit machine. At least for a small child in the 1960s it was. I had never heard the phrase, at that age.

MummBRaaarrrTheEverLeaking · 07/01/2023 18:38

How do you say Hyundai now then? I say Hi-Un-Die, is that wrong now? I still say Eye-Kia, although it's Eee-Kia on the ads.

I don't know but a hypothesis would be that at the point of change manufacturing moved to somewhere central and they no longer wanted to make two different designs.

Tulipomania · 07/01/2023 18:38

It's Nessuls.

Hyun - day - 'hyun' as one syllable.

Not really , I am more annoyed at the assumption made that I am unable to pronounce something properly in the first place.

I’m genuinely interested

are you actually annoyed by this?

While we are at it can someone call the Belfast Peugeot dealership and tell them it's not Pew Joe

Do you mean you've always pronounced it the correct way?

TugboatAnnie · 07/01/2023 18:43

I remember hearing Beijing for the first time and thought China had a new capital city.

No. I have pronounced in the way the company wanted me to. I would have , and could have, pronounced it correctly if that was what they wanted.

In Dublin my dad drove a Pew Joe, I in England drove a Purr zho (while mainly not relinquishing my Irish accent)

They’re clearly not working and you need to up the dose / quantity!

I see what you mean; yes, the Japanese pronunciation isn't difficult really.

Skoda as well , it’s now Shkoda 😂

And apparently the medium sized hatchback they sell is an Oct ah via not an Oct ay via.

They could have started off teaching us how it's pronounced rather than let everyone get used to the incorrect anglicised version.
