Sill want us to buy their cars though . . . .

Yes, but they don't actually care how you say it. They just want you talking about them

EXACTLY!

This is just a clever marketing ploy to keep them in the forefront of our minds when we are next looking to buy something - car, bookcase, finger-of-fudge - doesn't matter. All they want is to be the one we think of first.

(BTW, my original comment was mild sarcasm, just so people know)

No absolutely it wasn't in the 70s as far as my memory goes (happy to be disproved).

The Milky bar kid is strong and tough, but only the best is good enough, the creamiest milk the somethinist bar, nessals milky bar'.

70’s kid too & I always though it said Nest-lay. Even the logo for Nestle shows a bird on the edge of a nest with babies in so Nestlay would work so much better 😂

🤣🤣🤣 helter-skelter you're so funny, stupid, but funny. You'll like this, when in Rome do as the Romans do, or if that's not pushing your buttons, then how about the French government minister who complained about a famous London railway station being named after a famous French defeat, you may need to Google that 🤣.
The response from many Brits was if you don't like that name, then there's a long list of French defeats that we could name it after.
The point that your 2 brain cells don't seem to be able to grasp is that there's a very long list of foreign language words in the British dichotomy which have been adapted to suit our language.
What really annoys me is the failure of anyone born north of London, to pronounce Castle correctly.🤬😉🤣

... but you're the one complaining about foreign language words used in English.

Someone get Tygger a taxi home she's had a rough day

Tygger · 09/01/2023 13:19

Only when I read stupid replies like yours - "have a nice day yer all"🤣

OK

Stewball01 · 09/01/2023 13:38

Nessels. I still call it that. I'm 78 and dislike calling it nestlays. It sounds put on and posh if you see what I mean.

KirstenBlest · 09/01/2023 13:46

The company is Nestlay, the milk is Nessels.
Ikea is Ike-ear, even though I've known that it's Ick-ay-a in Sweden.
Lidl rhymes with Middle - don't care if it's really Leedle
Dacia is a tricky one as I know someone who had a Daysha for a long time, but I try to say Datcha now
Porsche is Porsh not Porsher.
Newcastle is New Cassle not Noo-Car-sul

Befanadi · 09/01/2023 13:48

Nestlé has an accent over the 'e' so it's supposed to be pronounced ending 'lay'. I've never heard anyone say nessels.

butterbible · 09/01/2023 13:53

@Tygger isn't your name Scandinavian?! 🤣 that level of self own.. oh dear

MandyMotherOfBrian · 09/01/2023 14:04

Fraine · 09/01/2023 10:22

By who? It’s never been pronounced ‘Marsails’ in France 😂 Or anywhere.

I’m guessing you’ve never seen or heard of Ron Atkinson then? His pronunciation of ‘Joooventus’ was particularly entertaining 😀

It's only people of a certain age. By the late 80s the marketing people noticed the accent over the e and started pronouncing it correctly

Irked.

It drives me batty when people say croissant wrong, it is not angry!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣

FancyFanny · 10/01/2023 16:39

All the old Nestle adverts are on youtube- they definitely say ness-lay not Nessuls in them

TeenDivided · 10/01/2023 16:47

@FancyFanny An ad was linked to right near the start of the thread which said Nessuls.

TeenDivided · 10/01/2023 17:53

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 07/01/2023 17:59

Not in the Milky Bar ads!

It's only from the 80s onwards, 70s was pronounced wrong

Apart from the ones that do. Examples already posted.

lieselotte · 10/01/2023 21:54

It was definitely Nessels back in the day.

As for Ypres, that's only the French name. The Flemish name is Ieper so Wipers is probably a mash-up of both.

Still, it's not as bad as calling Livorno Leghorn. Like HOW? Livorno isn't exactly hard to say!

jcyclops · 10/01/2023 22:29

5foot5 · 07/01/2023 17:57

I don't know how to break this to you gently, but I just found a recording of the advert from 1961 and they did say Nestlé.

(Nes lay)

The 1961 advert on You Tube does not have the original soundtrack. It is actually the "30th anniversary" advert from 1991 using the 1961 film but 1991 soundtrack - hence the "Nestlé". Somebody has already posted the 1977 advert where it is "Nestles" and here is another "Nestles" from 1973:

Tygger · 11/01/2023 08:35

So is Porsche - porsher or porsh?🤔

Yes, I posted the original version and they say Nessuls.

Re Lidl and Aldi you might like this

oops Spect8 beat me too it!

viques · 11/01/2023 18:43

Re Nessuls and neslay. You can tell if it’s a properly old advert if it is in black and white. Sigh, I can remember the pointless tedium of black and white snooker ( on a black and white tv, it could have been being broadcast in glorious colour but I wouldn’t be any the wiser)
