Inspired by another thread … I was surprised by the level of atheism professed … as I always though I was in a tiny, tiny minority.
would be interested to see the MN response.

IABU - there is a god
IANBU - there is no god

I would be interested to know how many purported atheists on here actually believe in ghosts/woo/the supernatural. Going by how popular woo threads are on here, I’m sure there are a few.

Educate yourself. Sex is a gift meant to be enjoyed only by married couples, when they are open to the possiblity of new life.

That way, no-one feels used or abused, there are no STD transmissions, there are no unwanted pregnancies and no abortions.

You do realise pregnancies can be unwanted even within marriage?

FrenchOrEnglish · 02/01/2023 23:08

I'm on the app.

But no. There's no god.

But I can totally see why people like to think there is. Same with heaven/afterlife. It makes things a lot easier.

Christianity has always hated women, they even got rid of the divine feminine (Sophia) that exists in judaism and renamed it the Holy Spirit to try and keep women subjugated.

Before Judaism, and even in the early centuries of Judaism even the jewish people often worshipped the variety of gods and goddesses that they worshiped prior to Moses (e.g. Asherah as per the Asherah poles mentioned in the bible).

I read something a long time ago. I think when I was reading about hypnobirthing (worked amazingly for me had an almost 10lber with a big head with only gas and air and no stitches!) and the psychology of childbirth through the ages.

There was something about men’s jealousy of women being able to give forth life, that men came from women’s bodies. Similarly with ‘Mother’ Earth creating and sustaining life. Also men not being to control their dicks around us so to take that power away from us they subjugated us and called us whores in a nutshell. Probably where Eve ‘tempting’ Adam came from and that women sprang from
Adam’s rib or whatever nonsense it is.

I'd assume that the atheists would be the posters on those threads with the cynical voices?

Not necessarily. There was a report indicating that most atheists subscribe to some superstitious beliefs. Unfortunately I can’t find a link that isn’t behind a paywall.

One of the reasons I believe in God is because too many of my prayers have been answered for it to be a coincidence. I have experienced life-saving miracles myself and have seen people (including family members) being healed after prayer - in some cases leaving their hospital doctors confused, unable to explain their patient's sudden, miraculous recovery. I can't pretend to myself that this hasn't happened.

@NestingSparrow

Just a further wee point about Dawkins -

I'm of the opinion that he rubs people up the wrong way because his neurodivergence leaves him a bit lacking in tact, so he often goes straight in with a no-holds-barred dismemberment of a distinct individual's personal testimony which even I find a bit over the top. He doesn't really do 'i respectfully disagree, and here's why...', but also on top of that I've long suspected that he is not, in fact, merely an atheist and verges more toward aggressive antitheism.

I have absolutely no issue with most of his contentions because I agree with him for the most part, but I do accept that he really doesn't do atheism much of a favour in the way he presents it because his stridence does play to accusations that atheism is about persecution of religiosity when it absolutely is not.

One other observation about your post - Big Bang theory does not suggest that 'all those atoms' are created 'out of nothing'. That is a misrepresentation. When the theory was first presented in an embryonic state, it was only concerned with the origin of the universe, not the cause of the 'big bang' itself. This has given rise to the notion that the big bang 'creates matter', when in reality it was originally nothing more than a hypothesis to explain how the universe expanded from it's origin point. This hypothesis has since expanded to explain how the big bang came about in itself, and this includes covering the part regarding where the matter that constitutes the universe came from.

What neurodiversity does Dawkins have?

It's always confused me that Stephen Fry quote about if God is real then he's evil...surely its the Devil causing all the children's cancer and God helping the cure?

When I was younger several children at my school got leukemia and it was found to have been caused by radiation from the smelting plant down the road. If I wasn't atheist, I would say the businessmen who built a radioactive waste centre near a school because it was cheap land near poor people fell to temptation, and maybe God inspired something in the person who spearheaded the campaign to getting it shut down.

But, I'm an atheist, so maybe that's overly simplified

The Christian representation of the Devil does not have him with creative powers, which is what cancer is. He's all about getting humans to do things: Jesus in the wilderness is good example.

Where do you live and who do you associate with that you thought you’re in a « tiny, tiny, majority » as an atheist?! IRL or cyber.
That’s really surprising tbh

An somehow theists think it makes more sense for a god to come being without having some cause or source?

Inventing a solution that's far more complicated than the problem it purports to solve isn't very convincing.

To me religion is just a method of control.
Usually men controlling women.

I can understand why people find comfort in their faith but it's not for me.

Op asked about God not religion. Two different things.

Im fairly spirtual but a little bit on the fence about god/no god.

However, as far is religion is concerned, it’s about some people yes usually men, controlling EVERYONE else.

Some religions have the alter/crosses at the back, so you symbolically you HAVE to go through the priest/clergy to get to god. Control!!

SoShallINever · 02/01/2023 23:39

There is no proof either way.

I couldn’t have made a better case for not believing in God.
Well done, you’ve just confirmed that religion is a mendacious cult.

Mañanarama · 03/01/2023 00:00

I don’t believe in any God but I do appreciate that it’s very comforting for many people; it must be quite nice to believe.

Yes, I’ve wondered the same. Maybe we should start a thread asking? :)

LanceandBecky · 03/01/2023 00:22

Religion is so out dated now, I do find it strange that anyone believes the bible is 'real'. But I don't have issue with anyone believing what they want to - I wonder if it's an unwillingness to accept that death is the end of life and we don't waft up to heaven.

Everything can be explained by science now, we have answers.
