to ask for non-judgy advice? Buying clothes for obese DD

DD8 is very overweight. We are aware and trying to tackle it.

I'm really struggling to find clothes that fit her. She needs age 9-10 for the length as she's also tall. Her belly is currently huge and out of proportion with the rest of her :( Age 9-10 jeans won't button up, but if I go up a few sizes to fit around the belly, they'll be too long and too big in the thighs, bum etc. She says elastic waistbands dig in and are too uncomfortable. Tops are less of an issue as she can just wear things very oversized, but I would like her to have some clothes that actually fit her properly.

Parents of overweight children, how do you find clothes to fit them?

Marks do a good range with varying lengths . Might be worth a try .

Fallin · 27/12/2022 18:15

What about trying womens clothes in the petite range

upfucked · 27/12/2022 18:16

I’ve seen ‘comfort range’ for school clothes maybe this exists for other children clothes. I’m assuming you’ve googled obese children s+ clothes.

KillerRobotCompetition · 27/12/2022 18:17

H & M do plus size kids clothes called ‘generous fit’

mamabear715 · 27/12/2022 18:17

Oh, I thought your DD might be older.. I buy my grown up DD lots of mens' clothes, SO fortunate that hoodies etc are unisex, as are joggers!
Bless your DD, I don't know what to suggest other than have things made for her, at least for special occasions..

BoxerMam · 27/12/2022 18:18

H&m do a wife fit children's range

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 27/12/2022 18:19

My DSC were both obese and the H&M generous fit range online was perfect.

PeekAtYou · 27/12/2022 18:20

Would wearing a dress help so there's nothing touching the belly area ?
Some shops do a plus fit as well as different lengths for kids who are taller or shorter than average.
It might be worth asking a local seamstress about costs to change lengths on trousers too.

NoSquirrels · 27/12/2022 18:21

Can you get the length etc altered on one’s that fit at the waist. Jeans are never the easiest clothing item to get a good fit on anyway, so maybe just give them a swerve for now?

Polik · 27/12/2022 18:22

Wear skirts/dresses/shorts rather than trousers. She may well manage just skirts/dresses and socks. If not, team with tights (you dont notice the extra height needed to fit waist so much).

MilkyWaytoday · 27/12/2022 18:23

Maybe dresses or long tops with leggings as a larger size leggings could be folded up at the ankle or taken up easily with wonder web.

Sceptre86 · 27/12/2022 18:25

I was an overweight kid. My mum would buy me bigger sized clothes and my dad would take the trousers up etc. I would suggest shopping only at stores that have a more generous fit so for example people have already suggested h&m generous fit, places like Asda too. I'd avoid shops like Zara, the regular range at h&m and River Island as their clothes are better for slimmer children. If you can sew that's great, if not maybe find someone local who does tailoring so they can help out with takeing up hems and shorting sleeves.

Sceptre86 · 27/12/2022 18:26

*taking even.

Phineyj · 27/12/2022 18:26

Try Popsy clothing online. Everything's stretchy and they alter lengths without an extra charge. My daughter (10) and I both look good in their stuff - I'm tubby and she's skinny!

goldsparklyChocolate · 27/12/2022 18:28

My 2 year old is very big over 99th centile we got leggings aged 5-6 and just took them up which worked well

WaltonOnNaze · 27/12/2022 18:29

My son is 7 and wears aged 11. He is also the height of an 11 Yr old so is both chunky and in proportion.

I get bigger trousers and get them taken up. He found elastic waist cargo pants good but now happy with joggers (which don’t get taken up but he is v tall so it is ok).

Next good for tops as long arms etc.

sports direct for t shirts and sports wear.

buy women’s clothes but check style as some are shaped differently for boobs etc.

sainsburys tu is generous fit too.

44PumpLane · 27/12/2022 18:30

Next do some of their leggings in slum fit, generous fit or long leg. Worth a look.

Phineyj · 27/12/2022 18:30

That's a good point re Next - their leggings are generous around the waist.

Favouritefruits · 27/12/2022 18:31

M&S do plus fit for children

christmassedout · 27/12/2022 18:31

She's only 8- women's petite clothing is far too grown up for her and wouldn't fit her right anyway.

I can't find anything in the H and M generous fit range that's in stock, it all just says stock coming soon :(

Dresses can still be very tight because of her shape atm. Most of her weight is belly so if we go up too many sizes it falls off her shoulders, is down to her knees etc and looks ridiculous.

I will have a look at Popsy @Phineyj they sound great thank you.

vertbaudet do varying hip widths which could help with buying trousers - I have the opposite problem trying to buy for a skinny child. Their trousers are lovely quality would recommend if you think the wide hip trouser fit would work.

Zedcarz · 27/12/2022 18:33

You can get really nice clothes in new look for different sizes, probably already been said but you might fair better looking at women's clothes and new look likely to have styles kids will like.
I sometimes get adult clothes for my kids as they're v tall , if you haven't already maybe do measurements so you can have adult's size in mind and choose a load online to try in the comfort of home and return if no good.
Once you've ascertained size and tried a few then will be a more pleasurable shopping trip with a size in mind rather than the possible stress of changing rooms and things not fitting which can be upsetting for someone who might be self conscious, even if not self conscious changing rooms can get kids hot and bothered v fast!

ThinWomansBrain · 27/12/2022 18:34

I was an overweight child - my mum made most of my clothes, and I made my own from about 12 onwards. I still recall the embarrassment of clothes she purchased - school summer dresses (the uniform only specified the colour) from a maternity range.

LivIoe · 27/12/2022 18:35

For trousers can you just get a waist and hip that fits and have the length taken up?
