DD8 is very overweight. We are aware and trying to tackle it.

I'm really struggling to find clothes that fit her. She needs age 9-10 for the length as she's also tall. Her belly is currently huge and out of proportion with the rest of her :( Age 9-10 jeans won't button up, but if I go up a few sizes to fit around the belly, they'll be too long and too big in the thighs, bum etc. She says elastic waistbands dig in and are too uncomfortable. Tops are less of an issue as she can just wear things very oversized, but I would like her to have some clothes that actually fit her properly.

Parents of overweight children, how do you find clothes to fit them?

Thanks those who have shared similar experiences. It's reassuring to know we aren't the only ones dealing with this. It sounds like Tu might work for her, I'm going to try and get over there tomorrow.

@Zedcarz I can't just measure up and go shopping. Have you actually read the thread?

It's not just she has a big belly, but if her belly was in proportion I would be able to buy her clothes to fit her. Her belly is the problem.

I got her to try on a bikini more so I could see how big she is to be honest. She's definitely unhappy with her weight, but she doesn't actually seem too bothered about wanting to cover up. She really doesn't like anything tight over her belly. She's been wearing the leggings she does have under the belly as the waistbands won't go over it and then tops that don't cover down to the leggings, so some belly hanging out and that doesn't seem to bother her 😳I've obviously now bought her some oversized tops that do fit.

Hope you find something suitable op. I’d definitely try and get a gp apt in new year. I was overweight but had gut issues with bloating and ibs type symptoms. I have a photo where I look heavily pregnant. It would be painful so I’d wear waistbands under my tummy, sounds like dc is doing this.
I changed my diet, lost weight and the bloating and pain stopped.
It’s definitely worth getting checked out just in case there is a good intolerance or condition making things worse.

I obviously don’t know your financial situation, but an option may be to find a local seamstress. If you look for someone who makes custom children’s wear they’d be able to make her leggings and tops to her measurements.

This is a brilliant idea

I've taken her to the GP today and been told it's just fat 😔 Her body fat percentage is 33.7, it should be under 25. Unsurprisingly most of that is from her waist measurement. GP can't explain why so much of her fat is on her belly and wasn't particularly interested.

She did tell the GP that she drinks mostly fizzy drinks at her dad's house. I wondered about bloating from that, although I don't think her belly looks any smaller than when he dropped her back here.

Thank you everyone who suggested Tu, we've managed to buy her some leggings that fit today Flowers

My 10yo DD loves big baggy clothes. She is often stealing DH or my clothes for an oversize look. She is very tall too and will happily wear a women’s medium or age 14+ clothing on her top half. She is skinny so trousers aren’t a problem but she favours leggings or baggy cargo style pants. She borrowed and kept an adults size 16 hoody off my sister and it looks really nice on her so don’t worry about size labels too much. I’d love her to wear stuff that fitted properly but my days of choosing her clothes are long gone.

Regarding bottom half if she is tall would elasticated trousers from a women’s petit range fit? You could always take the bottoms up or use some non iron tape?

You are going to have to speak to her dad op. This is surprisingly common. My friends dd had exactly the same thing - her dad and his family would provide limitless poor food choices as a treat and her dd became extremely overweight , - multiple cream cakes and large bars of chocolate etc. . Not to scare you but she took matters into her own hands at 14 and now has very disordered eating and is extremely underweight. He needs to work with you on this for your dd.
