"The Magnificent Seven", "What amazing clothes", "What adorable children" - AIBU to think that the Royal Family is just the Truman show for a lot of people

cakeorwine · 26/12/2022 09:56

Except the people actually know they are in it.

Such sycophancy. There is the role of the Head of State that the King fulfills but this is an obsession with them.

Their role just seems to sell newspapers now. To generate clicks in the media. And headlines.

They are just a family. I am sure there are plenty of other families with 'adorable' children, where the mum wears 'amazing clothes' (that people seem to want to to go out and buy)

AIBU to think that some of the headlines and the stories is just pure obsession and is almost putting them on this pedestal?

The Magnificent Seven indeed.

Yes, OK @cakeorwine. Whatever you say. I still think you just want a thread full of republican frothing. And it should still be on the RF board, specifically designed for these threads.

You don't have to post if you don't want to.

But it would be like posting "People are obsessed with their pets" on the pets board.

I don't hate the Royal Family. They are just a family.

I hate the idea of Monarchy. I hate the sycophancy in our media towards them.

There is a very big difference.

Just post your tripe in the Royal Family section, you are no different to the sycophants. You didn’t start a discussion about the idea of monarchy, you specifically started it about the individuals in the royal family in AIBU.

So YABU, the Royal Family section is that way ➡️

What's the Truman show?

The famous film.

No sorry I can’t see why:

  • a thread loving the royal family
  • a thread hating the royal family
  • a thread discussing the media treatment of the royal family

ALL don’t belong in a section titled ROYAL FAMILY

I am really amused by your insistence that you somehow have a superior take on the royal family that is oh so different to the others.

fancyacuppatea · 26/12/2022 12:47

What's the Truman show?

It's a film about someone called Truman
He was born into a massive reality TV set where he is the star
Except he doesn't know it.
He is constantly filmed, his friends are just actors, his life is scripted.
He has choices but when he tries to exercise that, he is stopped by events
People watch him on TV, the media obsess over him.

But when it ends, people just switch channels and get on with their lives.

If people posted AIBU in sections people think they should go, then AIBU would be empty.

The RF section is full of sycophants.

@cakeorwine don't worry - it doesn't appeal to me.

I do like seeing pics of the Royal Family though.

ThreeblackCats · 26/12/2022 13:00

I’ve never, ever posted about the royal family, until now. So to me it seems that you @cakeorwine are the one that’s obsessed with them.
I suppose you think the Kardashian’s or Gemma and Arg are worthy though?
They are the ultimate celebrities.
You don’t like them, then ignore them.

AutumnCrow · 26/12/2022 13:00

I prefer the stuff Sarah Vain writes in Private Eye.

I shall look out for that, thank you Grin

Last time I checked, the Kardashians weren't part of the Monarchy of this country and their children weren't destined to become Head of State.

This media coverage is designed to give them good PR and to put a positive spin on them, - all part of the process of accepting their status.

This

The answer is surely not to read the Daily Mail then…….

maddiemookins16mum · 26/12/2022 13:04

Pretty sure those wains would have preferred to be at home with their presents than dragged out to a formal Church service then having to ‘meet the public’ (and don’t get me started on the idiots who wait out in the cold for hours to see them on Christmas Day).
And I say that as someone who doesn’t mind most of the RF.

Virginiaplain · 26/12/2022 13:05

There’s a pro M&H , anti RF contingent on mumsnet who are constantly trying to do anything royal down - very tedious but so repetitive.

AutumnCrow · 26/12/2022 13:05

cakeorwine · 26/12/2022 12:30

More to post on a section that is not obsessed by the RF.

People on here may or may not agree. But on the RF section, there may be just a bit more bias towards them.

You don't know it very well, then. It has a large share of republicans, posters who loathe Andrew and who want to discuss the Epstein connection, posters picking apart the media, and a richness of frothing one way or the other over all the members of the royal family (for and against).

If you think it's just hundreds of posters who like admiring dress coats then you have very much under-rated the board.

I don't think you need to be pro M and H to think the RF are parasitic cunts. I don't like any vaccuous celebs who make money from selling their dignity but I object a damn sight more when I'm forced to pay towards it.

If that feels repetative with all the other threads on this crap perhaps it's because lots of people want rid of them?

I share your thoughts. The general public who are struggling in a cost of living crisis seem to idolise a family photgraphed looking and behaving like a family from Downton abbey. I watch and wonder what mentality makes people celebrate being underdogs. We are supposed to be grateful he acknowledged public 'servants' in his 15 minute speech. It's utterly ridiculous

This is my view.Truthfully I think Royalists do not have enough self-respect. They are not any better than you and in the case of some members they are a lot worse than you.

MintyFreshOne · 26/12/2022 13:17

You remind me of the trolls on Twitter abusing Blu Ivy for looking like Jay Z

I mean, she does look like Jay Z, which is rather unfortunate given Beyoncé is her mum.

BUT her parents are billionaires so it literally doesn’t matter what anyone thinks 😆

GreenLunchBox · 26/12/2022 13:18

Nepoyeah · 26/12/2022 11:55

I wouldn’t get in a flap about it, all you are doing is watching a massive strategic flex from the papers (especially daily Mail) where they probably very successfully piss off M&H, who very publicly criticise them, by pouring insane levels of praise on the rest of the royal family. The rest of the royal family will accept it probably with sighs of relief that they are not the targets - for now.

It is why I can’t understand why M&H, who I am completely neutral on, went all guns out on the press. It is the living definition of ‘don’t wrestle with a pig, you’ll both get muddy and the pig will enjoy it’ (pig is the press in this scenario!)

The Netflix thing just provided fodder for the DM and mainstream media to post millions of reportage, commentary, analysis, criticism. They cannot survive without a constant stream of material, H&M give that to them in spades.

The DM is gleefully now making William and Kate look like the perfect, vanilla family probably to wind up M&H and also they know the public like a ‘goody’ and ‘baddy’ narrative.

Kate has made a lifelong bet that if she says or does nothing offensive ever she can’t be criticised for anything more than her lifelong passion for coat dresses. She is essentially ‘grey rocking’ the media. She is very smart, she has survived the wilderness years when being young, hot and not royal born puts a target on women’s heads, and in her vague, conservative, non threatening ‘traditional’ values (gardening, childcare, sport, carols) is drifting along to national treasure status by 50. She’s played a blinder.

Good on H&M

Maybe a part of their life's work will be to bring down the press. I hope so.

It's like Harry said in the documentary: if they don't have the means to fight back then who on earth does?

Maximinimalist · 26/12/2022 13:18

The only problem I have with it is how utterly stupid it makes the UK look. I don’t understand why this stupid tabloid makes the whole country look to the rest of the world like imbeciles stuck in 1800s fairytales.

The country is sliding backwards and here we are acting subservient to a dysfunctional family who have done nothing that puts them above any other human. They are no more intelligent, beautiful, stronger, morally superior, taller, etc, etc than the rest of the general population. Apparently God ordained them. It makes no sense and yet here we are, a nation worshipping mediocre people and lying to ourselves that they are better than us.

What’s wrong with our mentality? Why are we so servile? Look at the state of our country and we are grateful that someone who we pay enormous taxes to support, gives us a speech to remind us how much better he and his family are than us.

AutumnCrow · 26/12/2022 13:22

Some of those 'loyal subjects' at Sandringham who were interviewed had apparently been there all night in their chairs in the cold, with their bits of tat to give the royal children. Part of me thinks the RF should now stop it. It's cruel and demeaning.
