"The Magnificent Seven", "What amazing clothes", "What adorable children" - AIBU to think that the Royal Family is just the Truman show for a lot of people

cakeorwine · 26/12/2022 09:56

Except the people actually know they are in it.

Such sycophancy. There is the role of the Head of State that the King fulfills but this is an obsession with them.

Their role just seems to sell newspapers now. To generate clicks in the media. And headlines.

They are just a family. I am sure there are plenty of other families with 'adorable' children, where the mum wears 'amazing clothes' (that people seem to want to to go out and buy)

AIBU to think that some of the headlines and the stories is just pure obsession and is almost putting them on this pedestal?

The Magnificent Seven indeed.

a bunch of people who have not done or achieved much in their lives
credit where credit's due, they've been EXTREMELY successful in enriching themselves, worked VERY hard to hold onto thier wealth

Blossomtoes · 26/12/2022 22:57

It was announced that Kate and Camilla were given some military commander role of some sort.

You do love displaying your ignorance. Colonel in chief of a regiment is a ceremonial role traditionally held by a member of the RF. The Queen, Princess Royal, Duchess of Kent, Princess Alexandra have all done it. The regiments who have got Kate and Camilla regard it as a great honour.

donquixotedelamancha · 26/12/2022 23:41

Such jealousy of a beautiful family from the usual lot.

They do look better than the average middle aged couples where I live.

How bizarre to think that a) Charles and Camilla are good looking b) their supposed physical attractiveness is some kind of moral good entitling them to be looked up to c) people objecting to monarchy do so bases on jealousy of their looks.

I don't even know how to respond to stuff that bonkers. The lizard people conspiracy theorists make more sense.

They do look better than the average middle aged couples where I live. And since I've become a mum I find all children cute.

They're the representatives of your country, surely it's good if they look nice?

Kate does, but I really can't think who else you're talking about

Just like handing out titles to their children

From birth, William was a British prince with the style of Royal Highness and the territorial designation "of Wales". On his wedding day, 29 April 2011, his grandmother Elizabeth II created him Duke of Cambridge, Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus. The letters patent granting these titles were issued on 26 May that year.[4][5] Between his marriage and his father's accession to the throne, he was referred to as the Duke of Cambridge outside Scotland, and as the Earl of Strathearn within Scotland.[6][7][8]
On the demise of Elizabeth II and the accession of his father on 8 September 2022, as the eldest son of the monarch, he automatically became in England the Duke of Cornwall and in Scotland the Duke of Rothesay, Earl of Carrick, Baron of Renfrew, Lord of the Isles, and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland.[9][10] On 9 September 2022, the King announced the appointment of William as Prince of Wales and Earl of Chester.[citation needed] He is now referred to as the Prince of Wales outside Scotland, and as the Duke of Rothesay within Scotland.

He also has a whole load of honorary fellowships etc

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_titles_and_honours_of_William,_Prince_of_Wales

All well deserved, no doubt.

Yes

Having a member of the RF as a Commander in Chief is seen as a great honour by the military.

Until things happen....Looking at you, Andrew

Why do an AIBU without enabling the voting? Pretty pointless posting without it.

AIBU existed for years on just discussion without any polls.

Do they get a salary for these roles or are they just in name only?

Name only

They might get to wear a special uniform and hat as well for certain occasions. And medals. Lots of medals

They come with decorations. Like a little Christmas tree

YANBU, it is the Truman Show.

The only reason they put up with it is they’re brainwashed from birth that it’s their “duty”.

I feel so sorry for children raised in it and I think the whole idea of royals should be abolished, as a kindness to those involved.

Coxspurplepippin · 27/12/2022 00:11

'They come with decorations. Like a little Christmas tree.'

I imagined that said in the voice of the Princess of Lichtenstein.

You’re simply reinforcing my point.

Ceremonial role. Can’t you see the nonsense of it all? You don’t get it do you? You think others don’t understand it’s a ceremonial this and that. It is you, who can’t grasp the stupidity of it all.

Maximinimalist · 27/12/2022 00:27

It must be nice to make up and dish out titles to oneself and one!s family. Only ceremonial of course. It’s extremely important to note that it is only ceremonial ie, playing dress up.

It’s not stupidity or nonsense to the armed forces. Can’t you see the stupidity of refusing to accept that other people - quite a lot of them - don’t think the same as you? It might not be the RF that brings the tourists in but the ceremony certainly does.

The stupidity is not accepting that this nonsense is in decline. That it is ridiculous in today’s world.

I’ve never said or implied that some people do not believe in fairytales. In fact, as I’ve said earlier, it is apparently because the Royal Family make some people who buy into being lesser, happy that I must pay taxes towards their existence.

Murdoch1949 · 27/12/2022 08:01

This is all the right wing press having another pop at the Sussexes. How wonderful the Wales' are, such perfect children (Louis is obviously going to be trouble!). Kate was laughed at in the same papers for not working just waiting for Will, even after he dumped her to see wild oats. Now they're all over her because they think it will annoy H & M.

And this is the sad, pathetic nonsense we are supposed to be proud of? This is what makes some people happy.

The right wing press here is trying its best to influence the US. The problem is the US believes in social mobility, the American Dream. The idea of bowing and scraping before ordinary folk is simply ridiculous. It’s quaint though and worthy of being just a curiosity of a former great country now reduced to hanging on to a laughable “tradition” for it to feel like it’s still important.

The media is especially sycophantic this year to try and spite H&M. It's infantile

Exactly.

cakeorwine · 27/12/2022 09:13

I am sure they all look amazing and so smart in their uniforms.
Kate will take a picture and it will look brilliant because she is such a natural photographer.

I wonder if the RF ever speak to people who aren't sycophantic. Who don't act subservient.

I wonder if they have ever had a chat with a Republican about the Monarchy. Would it go something like this?

Are you trying to be funny?! @lollipoprainbow
Both the queen and Prince Philip were very good looking people and the only one of their four children who wasn't conventionally good looking when young was Charles. Marrying Diana ensured that Charles was the last one.

There is an older guy, a cousin of the queen's who is shocking looking but he's one person. Not his fault anyway.
William also married somebody extremely attractive by any conventional measure so gone are the days when the royals are ugly! you're about 50 years out of date with that quip, maybe 75!
