You do love displaying your ignorance. Colonel in chief of a regiment is a ceremonial role traditionally held by a member of the RF. The Queen, Princess Royal, Duchess of Kent, Princess Alexandra have all done it. The regiments who have got Kate and Camilla regard it as a great honour.

Both the queen and Prince Philip were very good looking people and the only one of their four children who wasn't conventionally good looking when young was Charles. Marrying Diana ensured that Charles was the last one.

There is an older guy, a cousin of the queen's who is shocking looking but he's one person. Not his fault anyway.
William also married somebody extremely attractive by any conventional measure so gone are the days when the royals are ugly! you're about 50 years out of date with that quip, maybe 75!
