Rishi disappearing act

As he is our pm I thought we would have heard more from him considering all the strikes and current mess of the country. I’ve heard one statement from him saying he feels bad for the disruption over Xmas and that’s it. AIBU to think he should be trying to sort this mess out or is he quietly working away in the background?

Why does the UK prime minister have to be impoverished? Is Biden impoverished? Macron? Blair?

Clavinova · 24/12/2022 12:30

He is the consummate banker-turned-career politician

Just like Macron.

DomesticShortHair · 24/12/2022 12:31

Personality wise, he’s a technocrat, not a leader. He doesn’t have the charismatic personality of one. Liz Truss had neither attribute. Boris was engaging, but had no moral compass, ideology or character.

For the job of Prime Minister of the country, charisma, character and integrity should be minimum pre-requisites. Airline pilots have to have good eyesight and hand to eye co-ordination or they’re allowed nowhere near a cockpit. Firefighters have to be comfortable working at heights, or else they can’t be firefighters. Leaders of the country should, at a minimum, be able to lead, inspire and engage.

fancyacuppatea · 24/12/2022 12:32

Not seen him for weeks until he popped up yesterday.

I'd almost forgotten that Boris wasn't still running the shit-show that this country has become.

sst1234 · 24/12/2022 12:33

The Tories have given up. They have accepted that they are going to get annihilated at the next GE.

They don’t need to be impoverished but they do need to be in touch. Trying to discuss business with a homeless man couldn’t have proved more how out of touch he is.

torquewench · 24/12/2022 12:13

He's turned up at a homeless shelter, asked someone if he works "in business" 🤦🏼‍♀️

I saw that and then his follow up question was "do you have any plans for the weekend?"

Finger on the fucking pulse of the people...

BringBackCoffeeCreams · 24/12/2022 12:38

He's doing photo ops serving food in a homeless shelter. It's so cringe I almost feel sorry for him. Serving food to a homeless man and attempting 'connecting to the peasants' small talk by asking him what business he's in.

Starmer is comfortable with legal process - hence plans to get us stuck in it for a while with plans for reform, also he is dull but Labour supporters say they don’t mind

Sunak got the economics right when he predicted what would happen, shame he wasn’t in earlier

I prefer economics background to legal. Others prefer Boris as on this thread - I can see why but he spent too much for popularity, and it was hard to see such spending. Not sure many fit the bill of all round

LaffTaff · 24/12/2022 12:44

I had high hopes for Rishi, but he's been incredibly disappointing thus far.

I've just listened to the video clip and the other man definitely mentions 'business' first, although you have to listen carefully;

I've just seen that

this can't be accidental can it? It must be a deliberate plan to make people feel as shitty as possible.

Why does the UK prime minister have to be impoverished? Is Biden impoverished? Macron? Blair?

He doesn't need to be impoverished but this is a man worth an estimated £720 million (net) who has benefited financially from the non-dom status of his wife despite it being his literal job to collect taxes, who made millions during the trading that triggered the 2008 financial crash, donated £100k to his former (private) school at a time when state schools are facing financial ruin, renovated one of his four homes to add a heated pool during a cost of living crisis, has various offshore investments in the Caymen Islands, and is suspiciously vague about his conflicts of interest.

He is so out of touch with ordinary are people and has no idea what their issues could possibly be, he not willing or able to expand his knowledge either because when they do trot him out for video calls and photo ops he comes out with shit like "do you work on finance?" (to a homeless person).

He's basically just a placeholder because the Tories can't afford the embarrassment of yet another leadership contest. He'll be hidden away as much as possible to minimise scrutiny.

I can’t figure out whether you’re making a positive or negative comparison? Either way I don’t really see what relevance Macrons credentials have in British politics.

Forever42 · 24/12/2022 13:00

What evidence is there that he's got his head down and is beavering away quietly? Have there been any results from this supposed hard work?

He also presided over the extension of IR35 that has driven a lot of IT work towards offshore outsourcers - like Infosys which his wife just happens to have a large interest in as it was founded by her father.

He has amply demonstrated he isn't that interested in the UK - he seems to be part of that cohort of people who continually warn us not to make them pay taxes of they'll fuck off somewhere else. I think it would be good riddance frankly.

notsorich · 24/12/2022 13:03

Honestly, I was momentarily confused by the OP, given he stepped down as Chancellor ages ago. I actually forgot he'd become PM.

Boris was a waste of space, but you certainly couldn't forget he was in charge. I hope Rishi is busy doing something sensible.

the80sweregreat · 24/12/2022 13:06

The daily Mail have photos of Rishi Sunak cooking in a homeless center today
Can't do links on here.
Apparently he asked the cook if he was in business .. he said no , I'm homeless. Awkward

Clavinova · 24/12/2022 13:07

Blossomtoes
He also mentions he’s homeless

Not at first. He says to Rishi;
'... sorting the economy out?'
'... ... business'

How would you answer?
'What do you care about business and the economy, you pathetic homeless person?'

Iam4eels · 24/12/2022 13:15

Clav, we all know that the Tories could literally dropkick a poor person into a shark tank and you'd find a way to justify it.

He could have answered with "I'm doing my best to sort the economy... more toast?" and left it there or, if he really needed a follow up, he could have asked "what would you like to see in terms of support?" so then it would look like he cared (I say look like because we all know he doesn't).

Clavinova · 24/12/2022 13:15

I've already linked to the clip. I can't see anything wrong with Sunak's answer to the question.

Iam4eels · 24/12/2022 13:19

What was wrong with his answer is that it was utterly tone-deaf and showed he has no understanding of the service users despite being there to show that he has an understanding of the issues facing vulnerable people. He's so out of touch, he's on another planet.

Clavinova · 24/12/2022 13:23

Iam4eels

Oh - so when the man said; 'I am interested in business - I like finance, it's good for the city' you decided he wasn't really worth having a conversation with - he was just a 'poor person' who needed to be processed as quickly as possible? Next please!

MrsMurphyIWish · 24/12/2022 13:23

Rishi also asks the same man what his plans are for the weekend, may as well had asked him what cocktail parties he had lined up!

I’m sure it’s a bad turn of phrase but surely “do you know places where you go to get support this weekend?” is a more empathetic question that just “what are your plans?”. Thoughtless.
