Rishi disappearing act

As he is our pm I thought we would have heard more from him considering all the strikes and current mess of the country. I’ve heard one statement from him saying he feels bad for the disruption over Xmas and that’s it. AIBU to think he should be trying to sort this mess out or is he quietly working away in the background?

Also, he was holding up the line with his waffling while that poor bloke's breakfast was getting cold.

Photo opportunity tea. Gotta look good... Xmas Hmm

Blossomtoes · 24/12/2022 15:42

Shame it didn’t.

Woopzies · 24/12/2022 15:44

People don't seem to understand that the most visible prime ministers are the ones who did the most damage 😂

Notonthestairs · 24/12/2022 15:47

"I'm sure a decent PR person would have told Sunak not to go at all."

He was right to visit. It is important that those in powerful positions witness what goes on beyond Cabinet rooms & private dining. We need politicians out of their Westminster bunkers and engaging with people, especially the most vulnerable.

What was missing - at least from that clip - was the sense of empathy and interest in that man's life and how he might ease things.

A wasted opportunity.

MzLucky · 24/12/2022 15:47

Funny op, I've thought the complete opposite to you. He posts a lot daily on Twitter what he's been up to and what's going on. I follow Beth Rigby from Sky on Twitter and she posted a interview with him the other day.

To me he appears to be a busy man.

Twitter? thats hard work!! and will certainly solve the nations problems or is he the UKs next Trump?

He needs to be sorting out the NHS strikes and that means talking to Pat Cullen not Beth Rigby.

I'm not sure if you noticed but this thread is about Rishi Sunak not Macron or anyone else

You could have fooled me. Why are Rishi's father-in-law, Johnson, Truss, Bill Gates, Braverman, Hunt, Rees-Mogg, Starmer (and Macron) mentioned up thread?

Cornettoninja
Either way I don’t really see what relevance Macrons credentials have in British politics

Don't you? You mentioned Macron on this thread before I did.

Anyway, I have last minute shopping to do...
I see some of you have already started on the Christmas sherry...

Now you are 'unfooled'

The clip of Rishi with the homeless chap is awful as was the one where he spoken to the elderly woman in a hospital a few months ago. Both demonstrated how out of touch his is and how he is unable to communicate and empathise with people (outside his tiny, rarified circle)

He needs to understand what's going on

being there for a 10 min photo opp isn't going to make that happen.

it looks like he doesn't even understand where he is!

EmmaAgain22 · 24/12/2022 18:17

Listening to that again, the chap is Dean, apologies, I heard Steve.

I still can't hear what Dean says....something about the economy, then business.

oreste · 24/12/2022 18:52

I reckon he will have some job interviews lined up by Boxing Day. Here's hoping!

Clavinova · 24/12/2022 22:22

Your comparison still has no value and was utterly random. As I’ve clearly missed it, what was your point?

I thought that was obvious - Macron previously worked as an investment banker.

My reference to conversations between him and Sunak at a summit of international leaders that Sunak initially dismissed as not worthy of his time is the same as making CV comparisons?

This trip?

How were the shops Clav? Can we stop the political bickering for 24 hours to enjoy Christmas? 🥂

BigMandysBookClub · 24/12/2022 22:40

He's awkward and out of his depth. He also created a lot of the financial problems we have now (although the constant QE since 2008 was before his time). He is weak and has no answers because you can't put a positive spin on the problems we have now as they are all Tory created. He still mentions Jeremy Corbyn in PMQ's for fucksake. That's not promising is it?

This is all just a gravy train for these people. Not actually ability or inclination to do their jobs unless it benefits them.

willstarttomorrow · 24/12/2022 23:11

He is totally out of his depth as PM. Liz Truss got voted in by Tory party members because she appealed to the right wing, 'we're alright' out of touch, older demographic who voted. We know how well that turned out and we have ended up with a PM who, when chancellor, gave out money to such an extent it would make confirmed socialists blush! However where did that money go? All private business and strangely enough particularly very wealthy people at the end of the day.

The economy is totally fucked after 12 years of these people being in power. I work in the public sector and I am so fed up with the "top down" narrative that is continually peddled but obviously does not happen. I have taken a wage hit of over 20% but more importantly the children and families I work with are unable to survive financially. Many children live in poverty, not just financially, but in aspirations, education and opportunity. This was not the case when this government came into power and - whilst Tony Blair is only remember for Iraq- the difference Sure Start made was incredible.

StoneofDestiny · 24/12/2022 23:24

We've had an incompetent, amoral and divisive government for 12 years. We have a government that won't put themselves before the electorate. We've had a succession of PM's, Chancellors etc etc .
Johnson evaded public scrutiny by refusing to be interrogated by the media. Sunak is doing the same.
The public services are in a critical state. Our government will not resolve the issues. They are just hoping the workers will lose public support.

Good thanks - some nice independent gift shops near me. Waitrose looked very busy at 4pm so we stopped in Caffè Nero for 45 minutes and went back.

oreste · 25/12/2022 09:53

I think Rory S hit the nail on the head when he said that the whole electoral system needs reform to bring it into line with other modern democracies. The Tories are toast, Labour would be same rot, different uniform. It would be hard to let go because of history, nostalgia but go it must...a deepening economic crisis is possibly a good time to plan for this change.

Lanneederniere · 25/12/2022 10:10

This,100% :

I noticed that, when the elderly lady in hospital answered him back in a way which didn't suit his agenda, his face and manner completely changed.

I think he is a snake and totally untrustworthy.

nokidshere · 25/12/2022 13:56

He is invisible because he doesn’t need to be visible. Everyone else is doing the divide and conquer work for him, on social media, on here, on talk shows and radio.

Absolutely this ^ He just needs to do nothing to be doing better than the previous ones.

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 25/12/2022 14:03

MrsMurphyIWish · 24/12/2022 13:23

Rishi also asks the same man what his plans are for the weekend, may as well had asked him what cocktail parties he had lined up!

I’m sure it’s a bad turn of phrase but surely “do you know places where you go to get support this weekend?” is a more empathetic question that just “what are your plans?”. Thoughtless.

??? He was there just before Christmas. That question was quite sensible. What does happen in soup kitchens, homeless centres over the Christmas period?

Many people have no idea. It was the reason both if them were there

Mmm! Suspect he had all of that covered - seriously. This thread prompted me to go an have a look. A tad pompous but busy with a wide range of people.

You think asking a homeless man what his plans are for xmas is "Sensible"

Don't think so, Sunak clearly has no idea how millions of people live.
Sunak is a fraud.

If this were a Labour PM, would be his "Bigoted woman" moment and the press would tear him apart with days of punishing headlines.

Democracy? we don't live one.

jcyclops · 25/12/2022 21:47

I'm amazed that people think he has been "invisible" recently. Maybe they don't have access to news, or only notice those events that can be portrayed as controversial - so many can only recall the awkward interaction at a soup kitchen. Over about a week they seem to have missed a 2-day visit to Northern Ireland, visits to Estonia and Latvia, and hosting a Downing Street Chanukah reception. But then again, the average Brit doesn't care a toss about Ireland, our NATO allies and the British Forces serving there, nor the Jews.

Pretty disingenuous when we are teetering on the brink of a general strike with an economy fairing much worse than other G7 nations.

The point is the that the PM is not visible on the key issues at the moment domestically. He will always be involved in high level diplomacy and hosting people in No 10. That really isn't news unless there is some key deliverable to it.

That said, I see nothing that Sunday would do to improve the situation. There is nothing in the Conservative playbook that will make life better of working people at the moment so it is really irrelevant if it is him or one of the others accusing nurses of supporting Putin's invasion of Ukraine or sabotaging talks with rail workers.

Eleganz · 25/12/2022 22:09

*Sunak thanks autocorrect!
