To find adults that don’t swear …

Kind of odd?

I’m not sayinh you have to swear every sentence because that’s cringe, I’m just saying it’s ok to say “I’ve had a shit day today” or “fuck sake” if you’re annoyed.

I had dinner today with a friend and her friend and they spoke about a “fuck it list” but only said “f it list” … like we’re all adults who shouldn’t be offended by moderate swearing.

(And yes I understand not swearing in front of children, at work or elderly relatives)

Life would be boring if we were all the same. No reason why people should use words they aren't comfortable with.

StoneofDestiny · 17/12/2022 22:02

Many people can say everything they need to say without swearing.

Grendalsmum · 17/12/2022 22:02

I used to work with someone who said "sugar" and "fudge" - what's the point? It's so mimsy!

RampantIvy · 17/12/2022 22:03

A lot of my friends don't swear, and the only person in the family I have heard swearing is DD. I guess it depends on who you spend time with. I do say the odd swear words when particularly annoyed, but it is generally part of my daily vocabulary.

Shecrazy · 17/12/2022 22:04

Why does it bother you? I'm almost 50 and can honestly say I've never uttered a swear word in my life. I just don't like it. I was brought up in a household of no swearing and it stuck with me.

Yes, I'm aware this puts me in a very small minority, but I don't see why it would bother anyone else. I don't comment about other people swearing because that's up to them, but I'm also not going to join in just to please someone else.

It's quite an odd thing to question tbh, no one's ever been bothered about my lack of swearing before 🤷‍♀️

WimpoleHat · 17/12/2022 22:05

I think it’s a real class marker. And it’s a subtle knife, funnily enough! Middle middle class people are often horrified by swearing and look down on it as “common”. Yet it then flips when you get to very highly educated people (particularly in City/commercial circles), for whom it’s almost a sign of personal confidence. I think it’s particularly true when it comes to women as well. One of those “tribal markers”.

Angelofthenortheast · 17/12/2022 22:08

Yeah I agree, it weirds me out. I think it might end up a generationap thing though as it becomes more socially acceptable to express yourself and not be so constrained by the jane austeny way of life.

Ackity · 17/12/2022 22:08

I wish I didn’t swear. I swear too much and I think it is incredibly common and sounds so vulgar when I hear it in other women. So why can’t I stop?!

WeWereInParis · 17/12/2022 22:09

I think it's odd when adults in the company of other adults censor themselves in that way. In this situation everyone knew the word was fuck, so why not say it. Or, if you don't like the word, why call it an "f it list" at all, why not another name.

I get not swearing at all, but why saying "effing" - is it really less offensive when everyone knows you really mean "fucking".

(Obviously if you're with children I can understand more that kind of language, but even then presumably you don't want the child to copy the word "effing" either)

I do swear and love a good sweary rant but I hate hate hate people swearing out in public during the day around kids. I was on the bus with my 8 yr old the other week and the man in front was on his phone having a really loud conversation with every other word being 'fuck'. It was completely unnecessary and unpleasant to have to listen to.

Mumuser124 · 17/12/2022 22:11

I recently found out that adults who swear more tend to be more intelligent than those who dont.

I knew there was a reason I couldn’t go a day without utterering ‘for fucks sake’!

-Genius.

ShutUpBaggyTits · 17/12/2022 22:13

I love swearing!

Hated when the DC were small and I had to mind my language! 🤣

I don't swear, don't feel the need to, but again I know I'm in the minority.
Obviously did swear when I was younger 😂 but I did grow up in a house where it was frowned upon.

ironingboredrefusal · 17/12/2022 22:15

My parents would never swear and spend a lot of their time telling me not to swear because I love a good swear.

Florenz · 17/12/2022 22:15

People who swear in front of children are disgusting.

I try to swear as little as possible.

notfeelingChristmassy · 17/12/2022 22:16

I used to work with someone who kept saying "Excuse my French!". In a City bank. A traditional gentleman / public school boy he was. Bloody annoying.

City traders swear a lot. It's part of their language. And the calls are recorded but nobody cares.

housemaus · 17/12/2022 22:18

I know someone who says "oh it's so fluffing cold outside!"

I find it deeply, deeply annoying. Either swear, or just say "it's so cold" - don't make up some twee appropriation of swearing if you're clearly not happy to swear 😒

Same here, would let rip sometimes but it was unusual. My late husband never swore but others we knew did and it wasn't bothersome.

Atmywitsend29 · 17/12/2022 22:18

I'm common as fuck. I swear in front of my child and everything. My DH is very sweaty, swears in front of his mother all the time. She swears back.

That’s exceptionally weird that you’ve never once said a swear word. Have you lived a very sheltered life?

I swear a lot. But I don't find others not swearing to be problematic. We are all different. It's a bit odd to think it's odd.

LuciferRising · 17/12/2022 22:21

Swearing is part of a rich tapestry of language. Be wrong not to make use of it.

Agreed.

And in my example it’s called “Fuck It” so why not just say that? If you’re offended by swearing then it’s not for you anyway.

I swear and my husband tells me off. Ironic because he’s usually the one making me bloody swear
