To find adults that don’t swear …

Kind of odd?

I’m not sayinh you have to swear every sentence because that’s cringe, I’m just saying it’s ok to say “I’ve had a shit day today” or “fuck sake” if you’re annoyed.

I had dinner today with a friend and her friend and they spoke about a “fuck it list” but only said “f it list” … like we’re all adults who shouldn’t be offended by moderate swearing.

(And yes I understand not swearing in front of children, at work or elderly relatives)

Perhaps saying ‘f’ is a little odd, but otherwise it’s normal.
I heard that the astronauts on Apollo 13 objected to the film representation saying ‘we didn’t swear’. It’s not compulsory.

Grew up in a very non sweary household - I grew up thinking 'fart' was the F word - and I don't swear as an adult. The worst I've said out loud is bloody hell. I think it sounds incredibly rough, especially where it's used around children. I went to visit a friend and her DM was there and called one of the dc a greedy cunt and I nearly had a fit of the vapours. I consider this sort of language abusive wrt children and would never continue a friendship with someone who routinely spoke this way.
I really don't get why people say they love swearing? There are so many non offensive words out there to convey intense emotions.

XenoBitch · 17/12/2022 22:38

I used to work in a kid's hospital so we had to train ourselves to limit swear words. "Hedgehog" and " hairbrush" were alternatives we used.
We did swear like troopers out of the view of the public and patients though.

LolaSmiles · 17/12/2022 22:38

I don't care if someone swears or not, as long as it isn't every other word and it's appropriate to the context. To be honest I'd probably not notice if someone didn't swear either.

What mildly annoys me is when adults use twee substitute words like 'oh sugar/fudge' in adult company. Either swear or don't, but spare us the pretence of golly gosh I'm far too polite to use those words.

winteresting · 17/12/2022 22:39

I love a good swear!

I agree with a pp though who said about swearing in front of kids.

I know someone who taught their 3 year old to say “fuck off” if anyone tried to take them. I found that very common and chavvy.

I used to work with someone who said "sugar" and "fudge" - what's the point? It's so mimsy!

exactly 😂

I find cunt offensive but in some places it wouldn’t be considered one of the worst swears and would be pretty normal.

And what exactly do you mean by incredibly rough?

raspberrytinsel · 17/12/2022 22:41

what about 'feck it' kind of halfway to a swear but kind of anaemic as swears go?

CheesenCrackersmm · 17/12/2022 22:41

Justaminutetakeanhour · 17/12/2022 22:43

I think you just get used to not swearing in front of your kids/parents/boss and that carries over to other conversations? I mean why call it an f-it list? You would call it something else if you didn't want to swear? When my kids were young I said all sorts of things, but I got the piss taken out of me for months when I shouted "Oh crikey" when I dropped a kettle full of (thankfully cold) water. Everyone started saying that. It got boring fast!

lanthanum · 17/12/2022 22:43

I don't swear, and it makes it a whole lot easier not to let swear words slip out in front of children, etc. I once dropped something on my toe in a classroom, and a kid nearby said "I can't believe you didn't swear then" - it was definitely the sort of situation where anyone would have been forgiven for doing so!

I think a lot depends on who you spend time with. DH definitely had a period when he swore significantly more (although still fairly little by most people's standards) than before or since, and I think this is probably down to colleagues at the time.

Luredbyapomegranate · 17/12/2022 22:44

I don’t care if people swear or not, but saying f it list is weird - you are essentially bleeping yourself. either say fuck it or use a different word.

senua · 17/12/2022 22:44

I love a good swear!
Why?

melchim · 17/12/2022 22:44

I don't swear and nor do any of my friends. It just depends on the circles you move in I think. Not necessarily class based, there can be other sub-culture factors.

notacooldad · 17/12/2022 22:45

Could be out of habit. I'm around young people all day ( and they could make a saint swear at times!) so swearing is not allowed.

WandaWonder · 17/12/2022 22:45

I think I swore once maybe 20 years possibly

I just don't feel the need

I have nothing against what I think is appropriate occasionally swearing but I don't get people who can't have any conversation without every second word being a swear word

I am perfectly fine with being thought of as odd

Jellycats4life · 17/12/2022 22:45

I think swearing can be hilarious and therapeutic and fits a situation where no other type of word would. Sometimes it’s just needed.

I’ve never uttered a swear word in front of my parents though.

BellePeppa · 17/12/2022 22:46

I must admit I drop the f word quite a lot. Not in an aggressive way but just things like fuck it or what the fuck etc. i even find I use the c word far more than I ever used to. I quite like swearing but I don’t approve of people swearing in public.

LubaLuca · 17/12/2022 22:48

Krakenwakes · 17/12/2022 22:33

Swearing makes me feel scared -it’s like flashing knives and daggers. It’s completely alien to me.

So if I said 'Mind, there's dog shit there,' you'd feel threatened and frightened? I find that very hard to believe, nobody is that sensitive to profanity.

Spiderboy · 17/12/2022 22:49

Adults that don’t swear are fine. Adults that use substitute swear words are embarrassing

Twoscotcheggsandajarofmarmite · 17/12/2022 22:50

I never used to swear, we were brought up not to. My dad had a conniption one day when I said “knackered”, I was about sixteen at the time. I just never got into the habit of it and when the children came along it was easy to carry on minding my language.
Then I moved to Ireland and within a fucking year I sounded like a fucking docker. Love a good curse now!

That’s not a profanity, though, or a swear word. It’s what it actually is. It’s not a word I’d use, but it’s fine in that context.

Same here. Who has decided that cunt is so offensive anyway? It only refers to female genitalia. I love a good swear, but am never aggressive with it and always choose my audience, though I don’t know many people that are offended by it nowadays. As PP said, it’s only words used to enhance our conversations.
