To find adults that don’t swear …

Kind of odd?

I’m not sayinh you have to swear every sentence because that’s cringe, I’m just saying it’s ok to say “I’ve had a shit day today” or “fuck sake” if you’re annoyed.

I had dinner today with a friend and her friend and they spoke about a “fuck it list” but only said “f it list” … like we’re all adults who shouldn’t be offended by moderate swearing.

(And yes I understand not swearing in front of children, at work or elderly relatives)

Swearing is part of a rich tapestry of language. Be wrong not to make use of it.

This.

Why does it bother you? I'm almost 50 and can honestly say I've never uttered a swear word in my life. I just don't like it. I was brought up in a household of no swearing and it stuck with me.

Yes, I'm aware this puts me in a very small minority, but I don't see why it would bother anyone else. I don't comment about other people swearing because that's up to them, but I'm also not going to join in just to please someone else.

It's quite an odd thing to question tbh, no one's ever been bothered about my lack of swearing before 🤷‍♀️

I don't swear either. It's a generational thing.
Decent women didn't swear back in the day.

I rarely swear. I had my children young and consciously didn't swear around them and still don't do it now. Nothing to do with intelligence.... My IQ is 147, or it was when last tested.

I totally agree with you. I find people who say things like 'sugar' or 'fudge' instead of 'shit' or 'fuck' deeply irritating. Just say it,for fucks sake! I love a good swear when I'm really pissed off or I've hurt myself. But I don't pepper my everyday conversation with swear words, like some people I've encountered. You know the sort, fucking this, fucking that. I pick my moments!

I think it’s a real class marker. And it’s a subtle knife, funnily enough! Middle middle class people are often horrified by swearing and look down on it as “common”. Yet it then flips when you get to very highly educated people (particularly in City/commercial circles), for whom it’s almost a sign of personal confidence. I think it’s particularly true when it comes to women as well. One of those “tribal markers”.

Oh here we are again, everything on MN related to class 🙄

I find adults who comment on how other adults speak a bit odd.

Yes. It is rude to comment/take the mick out of people's accents. As long as you can understand what is said, it's fine. Regional accents can be quite charming. However we cannot hear each other on Miumsnet :-).

As for swearing, people swear across the board. You either do or you don't, class doesn't enter into it.
