Family member wants presents for all the children

I have a family member that has 6 children. Every year she expects that she will buy for my 3 and I will buy for her 6. We have tried in the last few years to stop this but she is refuses.
We have suggested that we take the kids out for a special day near Christmas and make it a tradition to do this, or else but one larger family present.

The budget is about €10/15 per child. As they are getting older it is much more difficult to buy anything decent for this amount so I end up spending more. Every year we end up receiving and buying plastic tat for the children. Its a waste of money and so bad for the planet.
She is very much into Christmas and birthdays and thinks its very important to buy each child a present. I honestly cant think of a single present for them as they are just into computer games. They dont read, play board games, sports, etc.
I am at a loss, does anyone have any suggestions please?

I dont want to offend her, she is already pi**ed as us for forgetting one of her kids birthdays earlier this year so dont want to rock the boat anymore.

Nintendo, PlayStation, Roblox etc etc vouchers

WorldLeaderPretend · 03/12/2022 10:27

My sister gets Amazon vouchers for my kids. Always spent. Dead easy.

MoanySloney · 03/12/2022 10:27

£10 Nintendo/Xbox/PlayStation vouchers in cards. Job done.

ShandaLear · 03/12/2022 10:27

Get them a big Toblerone each. They’re about £3.50 in Home Bargains. Seriously. They will LOVE a big Toblerone far more than any plastic tat.

dementedpixie · 03/12/2022 10:29

Tub of sweets
Money in a card
Amazon gift card
Big selection box

gaf · 03/12/2022 10:29

They sell X box vouchers etc in Tesco, it’s quite literally the easiest present.

I buy them for my DS’s friends birthday presents now.

ThreeblackCats · 03/12/2022 10:30

In your situation I’d be tempted to buy one big gift between the family. Maybe a sweetie hamper. Debenhams (when they still had a physical shop) used to sell big jars of sweeties, including big jars of retro sweeties.

It’s up to you what you buy, it’s not for her to tell you!

Big Toblerone is an excellent suggestion. My kids think it's an item of awe and wonder. Not sure if it's the size or the shape ........

The people who have suggested board game or books tokens when OP says in her original post the children do not play board games or read books.

I'd do this because I'm petty as fuck

That’s not petty - it’s sensible. Why should OP be shorter of money because her sister decides to overpopulate the planet only to let her kids play on videogames all day.

Cherrysoup · 03/12/2022 10:40

Tenner each in a card. It’s so pointless buying them stuff they might not like. Kids really do love cash. I do Amazon vouchers for my cousins’ 7 dc (2 cousins). At least they can then get something they want. I don’t have dc so it isn’t even, but I don’t mind it, i can afford it, plus they get the same for birthdays.

Janieread · 03/12/2022 10:42

I'd enjoy buying fun little things for them. Or a game to share - surely they can't all be into gaming all day?

A tenner in a card is miserable at xmas.

Bananarama21 · 03/12/2022 10:45

I think your being unfair she buys for yours so why wouldn't you buy for all hers. There's plenty of options out there such a gift cards. If a sibling and more dc than me I wouldn't give it a thought.

Cuddlywuddlies · 03/12/2022 10:45

Are any of them your godchildren? Could you say that this year you are buying for godchildren only??

Colourinsidethelines · 03/12/2022 10:47

I would definitely go with the cinema voucher. Someone did this for my boys last year and they loved it. Either that or consumables if you are worried about plastic tat. Bath bombs, selection boxes, crayons, play doh etc things that will be used and helps stick to the budget as well.

AppleandSpice · 03/12/2022 10:49

Id have to disagree. I used to get money from both Sets of Grandparents for Christmas and Birthdays (Birthday quite close to Christmas) and used to love it when mum would take us shopping to spend it.

My own dc were the same when they were given money.

Id rather someone get to choose what they actually want rather than trying to find something you think they might like which is so easy to get wrong.

Hobbesmanc · 03/12/2022 10:50

Amazon vouchers. Easy

DS would have been happier with a tenner or a big Toblerone than a £10 toy.

Schnooze · 03/12/2022 10:53

If you want to do an experience then print out home made vouchers and wrap those individually. Then they unwrap something but it’s your day out.

RandomPerson42 · 03/12/2022 10:54

You are being very unreasonable - you buy for the kids - simple.

I spent over 20 years buying presents for all 9 of my nieces and nephews - then they all became adults and when I had one child my sister stopped buying when my DC was 2 - as far as I’m concerned she can rot in hell for that - so if you want to destroy the relationship with your sister keep being a tight fisted grinch.

Cash or a voucher is my vote.

Yes These we’re only ever given at Christmas when both I and my dcs were young, so was regarded as something special!

DuchessOfDisco · 03/12/2022 10:59

£10 gift card and a £1 bag of Haribo. It will probably be the kids favourite present

TheCurseOfBoris · 03/12/2022 10:59

A shoe box/gift box/bag with a £10 voucher and a couple of sweet treats. HMV is good for gaming merchandise. Boots for smellies.
Wrap each item individually.

Well we have four nieces and nephews but don’t have any children ourselves. So it is always a one way street and we don’t mind, they exist and we are happy to buy for them regardless of it not being a one gift for one gift exchange scenario.

Ours are teens now and we go for vouchers, which I would never get for an adult but I think suits teenagers.

We have 1 DC. 6 nieces and nephews on DH’s side. We stopped buying gifts for them about 6 years ago when we realised they hadn’t given DD so much as an ice cream or colouring book since she was 2 and we’d been spending on thoughtful gifts for theirs (the 6 children are split across 3 families).

Just one very young nephew on my side and we buy him token gifts as my sister is pretty thoughtful when it comes to DD.

It’s about intention rather than cost.

And Xmas is a load of old sh1t anyway.

Topseyt123 · 03/12/2022 11:00

Either just tell her you can't afford to do this anymore so it is stopping or just put whatever money you are willing to give into an envelope for each of her children.

If she kicks off over it then ignore her. She is an entitled brat.

Grassisbluer · 03/12/2022 11:00

If they are gamers just get £10 playstation/xbox/whatever vouchers (you will need to check which setup they use first). They are handy for use within games. Maybe a chocolate Santa to bulk out the gift?
Cinema a great idea too. I think a trip with their cousins is something to look forward to and remember.
