I’m in my late thirties with one child and I’ve been asked out by a guy I know who’s 22. I like him, and find him attractive (and all the usual blah about him being mature for his age etc) but it’s quite the age gap.

Would it give you the ick, or would you give it a go? Can age gaps like that work out?

OP posts:

It's weird. I'm in my early 30s and would no way date someone in their early 20s.

Feef83 · 27/11/2022 15:49

I so want @ChristmasisRuined is come back and answer our questions!!

Nevermind31 · 27/11/2022 15:59

Could you imagine going out with his friends? I think I would just feel like their mum on a night out…

@ComfortablyDazed Not it's called being judgmental, fat shaming & ableist. I mean, it's fine but at least own it!

😂

So I need to put aside all sense of self-preservation, and be open to relationships with ALL men - no matter how sub-standard and unsuitable they are - because they’re more entitled to a relationship (and sex) with me; than I am entitled to say ‘no’ to them?

As I say, you’re funny. Grin

ComfortablyDazed · 27/11/2022 17:21

Oh and yes @ChristmasisRuined - I am very judgmental, I do own it. And nowhere am I more judgmental than the men who cross my threshold.

It’s meant I’ve ended up with a good-looking, solvent husband in good physical and mental shape, who’s an amazing husband and father and all round good person.

I highly recommend it. Life is a lot easier with such a man by my side. Wink

Sorry for the derail, OP. 22? Christ, no.

Well some people your age have twenty two year old sons....

Having said that, it doesn't stop late thirties men having flings with twenty two year olds rather frequently.
But that's all it's likely to be, a fling so there's no harm in it. You're both adults. Crack on, have fun.

At 17?

LadyWithLapdog · 27/11/2022 21:31

OP, I’d like to take back what I said. Or at least partially. I said I don’t know what you’d be talking about as there’s be so little in common. But now I think that people from different continents and cultures can find things to talk about, you don’t need the exact same cultural references etc.

strivingtosucceed · 27/11/2022 23:04

No I think this is weird whichever way you split the genders. A 22 year is young adult, but the "young" is doing a lot of work. I would be genuinely concerned if my son/daughter was with someone that much older and would be wary of their partner's intentions.

Also, it feels super weird for middle-aged adults to be telling people to use younger people "for fun". It's just not for me at all.

At 17?

Yes? Some people have babies at 17. I was pregnant at 17 and had a baby when I was 18. I've just had my 33rd birthday and my DS will be 15 in February.

ComfortablyDazed · 28/11/2022 07:32

Believe it or not - having babies at 16/17 is highly unusual in some people’s world.

Me and my partner have 3 older children and a 9 month old baby.

September 2022 - with partner of 6 years and 3 children and a 9 month old baby.

November 2023 - engaged to 19 year old and pregnant with fifth baby

Better?

Yes actually,
I split up with my ex the day after I made that thread.
Met the 19 year old at work. I did say we haven't been together long.

Believe it or not - having babies at 16/17 is highly unusual in some people’s world.

And believe it or not, some people still do it.

Which is what I stated originally. Your experience does not, I'm afraid trump facts.
