I'm not suggesting it's better. I'm saying the use of the word is incorrect. Neither have I disregarded a 13 year old as a child.

If you think it does make someone a paedophile then you don't understand the definition of the word paedophilia.

I understand the definition. I am arguing that the definition is wrong and it’s important we refer to them as paedophiles regardless of whatever a dictionary says. Language and definitions change with use and context over time. I would imagine the definition was created by the very people who would want everyone to think they’re not paedophiles.

There was a case not all that long ago where a teacher in his 20s ran away to France with his pupil who was 15. He was sent to prison and was labelled a paedophile in every single newspaper.

I don’t think the whole definition of paedophilia is as clear cut as you’re trying to make it out to be, and I think it’s unhelpful to try and highlight the distinction.

Rather than discussing what flavour of pervert they are, shall we just agree that they are nonces.

This.

Awrite · 29/10/2022 09:44

We all watched the film about JLL in the 90's. Dennis Quaid was amazing in it. Anyway, it showed that Britain did not accept it at the time and he had to cancel his tour and leave.

BigFatLiar · 29/10/2022 09:48

It was fairly normal in parts of the States, different social norms.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 29/10/2022 09:50

My parents didn’t ban me from listening to jll, but wouldn’t have him played in the house.
If you read about Elvis and Priscilla, it was very fucked up, with her parents signing her custody over to him.
Also Jimmy Page married an underaged child.
Nonces gotta nonce.

notmyrealmoniker · 29/10/2022 09:54

At the time in that part of the country they were born it was considered quite normal. It wasn't regarded by them as abnormal. It was to the British and a lot of Americans, but it wasn't unusual. Not saying it's right of course

Does it tend to be only the girl that is young in these sort of marriage or do you get 13yo boys getting married too?

FlowerBrooch · 29/10/2022 10:11

Be more outraged that children can still marry in some US states. UNICEF link below. Various stats are out there.

Here is a link to a charity fighting it www.unchainedatlast.org/united-states-child-marriage-problem-study-findings-april-2021/

78 13 year olds were married between 2000 and 2018.

Girls, but boys are often quite young like 17

ForwardRolls · 29/10/2022 10:17

I remember my mum telling me donkeys years ago that she had booked tickets to see him, but the show was cancelled due to the furore it caused here in the UK.

Erm how? He certainly wasn't flying the plane?

His abuse of her! You should read some news articles and see what he put her through! It was disgusting and traumatic to read.

WahineToa · 29/10/2022 10:25

Let’s just say ‘underage’? Regardless of whether they are under 10 or under 16/18 depending on where, it’s revolting and in most cases illegal. It’s also important we don’t make the culture excuse, it implies those girls don’t deserve the same protections and that those cultures don’t understand. They do. FGM could be excused culturally the same way, but we don’t and importantly the girls who it happens to don’t. Many, most, of these so-called legal marriages involving children are not consensual and the girls are not mature enough to understand. Whether it was 1970’s or 1930’s, it was not legal to have sex with or marry them in UK and many other countries. Making it statutory rape regardless of, like in Bowies cases, the girls growing up to say they ‘weren’t harmed’. They were. They were groomed to accept it, and be flattered by it. The adults around them failed them. Priscilla was never going to say she was abused! Of course she won’t, it’s common with groomed children to grow up and think it’s normal and you’re special because he chose you- see Woody Allen’s wife/step daughter too.
Elvis 100% a predatory sexual abuser. So was Bowie, so was Prince, so was Don Johnson, JLL… we can appreciate the art if we want, but I’m personally put off by a lot of it. Certainly R Kelly who sang about it! I don’t watch Polanski movies either. We put artists in elevated positions in society and their industries don’t have the same safeguarding protections other industries do so the young people around them are always vulnerable. If I find out these types of things it does put me off their art, I prefer to not give such a huge world platform to people like that.

Oh on that front I completely agree. He is a depraved, manipulative and abusive individual who believes his own hype. It was more the contributing to her death aspect of your statement. Aaliyah died in a plane accident that was carrying too much weight following a video shoot.

Why was she on the plane? What led up to that moment? Everything that he did to her, every single interaction led to it. Break it down. He certainly is to blame imho, which not everyone has to agree with!

I suppose JLL was only 16 at the time of his own first marriage. So boys often were married quite young. I think the reason they weren’t as young as the girls is that boys would be expected to support their new wives/children somehow - which they’d struggle to do at 13.

Titsflyingsouth · 29/10/2022 10:40

Even then it was considered ikky. When it was revealed lots of U.K. venues cancelled his gigs, his U.K. tour folded early and his sales plummeted.

Errrr, the guy you just made King was 29 when he met his future wife and she was 16 AND he was dating her sister. 32 and 19 when they married. Ick!!!

Who just made him King 👀

SallyWD · 29/10/2022 10:46

Yes it's really awful but was very common in certain American states at that time. Despite being awful it's not really surprising.

WahineToa · 29/10/2022 10:49

We don’t vote the king in! Also, wrong brother… it’s Andy that’s the perve!

Bill Wyman having a sexual relationship with a 14 year old doesn’t seem to have harmed his career.

Indeed not. It's odd that JLL's reputation in the UK was trashed for marrying a 13yo child when he was 22, but Bill Wyman's reputation in the UK was scarcely dented a generation later when (to quote Wikipedia) On 2 June 1989, aged 52, Wyman married 18-year-old Mandy Smith, whom he had "fallen in love with" when she was 13 and, according to Smith, had a sexual relationship with when she was 14. The couple separated two years later and finalised their divorce two years after that.

[One messed up family there - Wyman's son later married Mandy's mother, i.e. his Dad's ex-mother-in-law.]

The difference is presumably the huge change in social attitudes towards sex that got going in the late 1960s - the 'Permissive Society', much talked about when I was growing up (I'm in my early 60s now). A lot of men saw that as a licence to do anything they liked and the media egged them on. Samantha Fox was 16 when she started appearing topless in The Sun (page 3 girl) after her parents gave permission (her mother had sent pictures of her daughter in lingerie to the Sunday People). No shame any more in adult men ogling very young girls. Huge pressure on girls not to be prudes.

I've read any number of threads over the years here about male teachers having sexual relationships with girls from their school. I knew a young woman in that position myself. She was on my course at university and she told me that she was living with a man who had been a teacher at her school. The relationship had started when she was in the sixth form. She had a very messed up relationship with her mother and I suppose moving in with this man, who was decades older than she was, seemed like a better option at the time. I was very relieved when she eventually left him before we graduated. We weren't close so I didn't keep in touch. Hope she's doing OK now.

Different times. I hope very much that someone like BW wouldn't get away with that kind of behaviour now.

waterlego · 29/10/2022 12:57

Agree. Am I right in thinking that Peter Tatchell has claimed that he was engaged in consensual sexual relationships with older boys/men when he himself was a child or teenager? He says that he wasn’t harmed by these ‘relationships’ and this appears to have shaped some of his (unpalatable) views now that he is an adult, allowing him to justify what most of us would see as unhealthy attitudes and interest in grooming and abuse of those below the age of consent. It doesn’t matter whether Tatchell thinks and says that he enjoyed it at the time. What happened to him was wrong. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 29/10/2022 13:19

I'm not sure if he's said it about himself but he's certainly claimed that about at least one friend of his. I agree, wrong. Odd in the extreme that he can't see that.

waterlego · 29/10/2022 14:28

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g, thank you for clarifying; I couldn’t remember exactly what he’d said. I think it’s even worse if he’s speaking on behalf of others and insisting they weren’t harmed. 😡
