Indeed not. It's odd that JLL's reputation in the UK was trashed for marrying a 13yo child when he was 22, but Bill Wyman's reputation in the UK was scarcely dented a generation later when (to quote Wikipedia) On 2 June 1989, aged 52, Wyman married 18-year-old Mandy Smith, whom he had "fallen in love with" when she was 13 and, according to Smith, had a sexual relationship with when she was 14. The couple separated two years later and finalised their divorce two years after that.
[One messed up family there - Wyman's son later married Mandy's mother, i.e. his Dad's ex-mother-in-law.]
The difference is presumably the huge change in social attitudes towards sex that got going in the late 1960s - the 'Permissive Society', much talked about when I was growing up (I'm in my early 60s now). A lot of men saw that as a licence to do anything they liked and the media egged them on. Samantha Fox was 16 when she started appearing topless in The Sun (page 3 girl) after her parents gave permission (her mother had sent pictures of her daughter in lingerie to the Sunday People). No shame any more in adult men ogling very young girls. Huge pressure on girls not to be prudes.
I've read any number of threads over the years here about male teachers having sexual relationships with girls from their school. I knew a young woman in that position myself. She was on my course at university and she told me that she was living with a man who had been a teacher at her school. The relationship had started when she was in the sixth form. She had a very messed up relationship with her mother and I suppose moving in with this man, who was decades older than she was, seemed like a better option at the time. I was very relieved when she eventually left him before we graduated. We weren't close so I didn't keep in touch. Hope she's doing OK now.
Different times. I hope very much that someone like BW wouldn't get away with that kind of behaviour now.
