Ooops meant JLL was inducted in the Country Music Hall of Fame a couple of weeks ago. Weird, I love Rockabilly music but was never keen on him. He always gave off such nasty vibes. I never thought his music was as great, compared to other, less high profile musicians. Janis Martin was so much better and had a far greater catalogue of great songs, ditto for Ruth Brown.

Yeah it was a big thing, I remember about maybe 40 years ago.

I don’t remember all the exact details, but it was put out in a tabloid paper, front page news.

If I’m remembering it right, it was around the time Elvis Presley died, which yes, I also remember! So maybe between 1975 and 1978? Elvis died in 77, that was absolutely huge news. I was staying with an uncle and he used to get the FT and Times delivered and it was even front page on the FT, along with about 6/7 pages of write up inside.

I remember the JLL thing because apparently the state that they got married in allowed these young marriages and when it hit the tabloids, the brouhaha was huge and I believe that the state government was pressured to change the law.

I don’t think it was the first time though that people found out about it, as I remember my dad saying something to my uncle which translates to something like “Ha, that son of a mad man finally might have to do something. The b-word dog” and my uncle said “yes, that sister f-word-er should go to prison” and I must of lost interest at the point because I don’t really remember much after that. My father wouldn’t allow me to play my JLL 45’s though, I do remember that! Had to wait till he went out!!!

I’m not sure that is was ever en vogue, but I clearly remember Bill Wyman and Mandy Smith. Mandy was 13, 14 when they started having sex. This was in the 1980’s and a lot of young girls used to go to London to party in the clubs and hopefully get noticed! I think Bill Wyman was well in to his 40’s at the time!

As for Priscilla and Elvis, I think there’s was about a 10 year age gap and I do believe that Priscilla has said on occasion that he waited for sex because she was too young.

They still are, a number of US states have no minimum age for marriage.

In fact it can get you off a statutory rape charge because some states have a minimum age of consent, unless you are married.

1. she fell for him is the big difference. They didn't start courting for many years after that. I had my first 'crush' on a man and would go around saying I fancied him when I was 7/8 but the big difference is he didn't even remotely reciprocate because he wasn't a creep. It was just silly kid stuff obviously

2. Lots of us might be 3rd cousins without realising it and once you get to 2nd cousin once removed you're no more genetically similar than a random pairing so tbh this isn't that icky

An ex colleague is from one of the Republican state. Her family own a farm. Her mum and grandma gave birth when they were 14 and 12 respectively. It puts my friend off from getting married and having kids. She is only in her late 30s. It is still happening. Her cousins got married young too.

Priscilla Presley was 14 when she first met Elvis. They dated/saw each other on and off until she was 17 (he was stationed in the army during that time or in the US). At 17 yo she moved onto the Graceland residence, finished school etc. They married when she was 22. She has stated categorically that they didn’t have intercourse until the wedding night which he insisted on.

In his state it wasn’t that weird. Funnily enough she was Jerry Lee Lewis’s second wife. He married his first wife when he was 16 lol.

He also had multiple other wives and mistresses who weren’t super young or even younger than him so I don’t think it’s fair to call him a pedophile, it was just normalised to him as it has been to a lot of people through history.

On top of all this as normal as it was to Jerry Lee Lewis - it was a huge scandal at the time. The reason it didn’t totally ruin him is because at that time RocknRoll had such a bad public image as “devil” and kids music (and worse racially charged descriptions) that nobody expected much from rock stars.
Chuck Berry also went to prison around that time for transporting a 15 year old across state lines to have sex with her.

Jerry Lee became mainstream and acceptable later, at the time he wasn’t anyway. Even Elvis was hugely controversial back then.
