Errrr, the guy you just made King was 29 when he met his future wife and she was 16 AND he was dating her sister. 32 and 19 when they married. Ick!!!

Actually that’s not a bad ‘snapshot’ of a commonly held attitude of those years.

Coincidently, the builders were working next door to my place yesterday. A song came on their radio from the 70s or 80s- one of the lines of the song is about ‘cheap wine and a teenage girl’ . Lovely. (Sarcasm) I felt a bit sick.

The soundtrack to my youth is made up of misogynistic melodies.

The song is Cheap Wine by Cold Chisel and the line is Cheap Wine and a three day growth. Absolutely no mention of a teenage girl anywhere in the song.

I believe it was/ is legal in some American states to marry at 13.

disgusting to us obviously but ‘normal’ to them
not sure about the cousin thing being that bad after all you are currently legally allowed to marry your first cousin in the U.K.
I work with someone in their 30’s who did just that.

TheLassWiADelicateAir · 29/10/2022 05:42

JoanOfAllTrades · 29/10/2022 02:32

I thought everyone knew that!

Mind you, I’m probably quite a bit older than the “everyone” on MN, unless you’re all older parents!

Yeah it was a big thing, I remember about maybe 40 years ago.

I don’t remember all the exact details, but it was put out in a tabloid paper, front page news.

If I’m remembering it right, it was around the time Elvis Presley died, which yes, I also remember! So maybe between 1975 and 1978? Elvis died in 77, that was absolutely huge news. I was staying with an uncle and he used to get the FT and Times delivered and it was even front page on the FT, along with about 6/7 pages of write up inside.

I remember the JLL thing because apparently the state that they got married in allowed these young marriages and when it hit the tabloids, the brouhaha was huge and I believe that the state government was pressured to change the law.

I don’t think it was the first time though that people found out about it, as I remember my dad saying something to my uncle which translates to something like “Ha, that son of a mad man finally might have to do something. The b-word dog” and my uncle said “yes, that sister f-word-er should go to prison” and I must of lost interest at the point because I don’t really remember much after that. My father wouldn’t allow me to play my JLL 45’s though, I do remember that! Had to wait till he went out!!!

The scandal about Jerry Lee Lewis was in 1958, not 40 years ago.

autienotnaughty · 29/10/2022 06:01

I'm in my forties and I knew about Jerry Lee Lewis!! There's a film about it called Great Balls of Fire staring Dennis Quiad and Winona Ryder, I remember watching it in the nineties.

Yes it's horrifying, but surely more shocking is the fact it was totally legal at the time.

Sorry. You are right. I had to go and look, I was so convinced I had the lyrics right. So I also looked at ‘ are you old enough’ by another band - title mentioned by the other poster -can see why other poster thought it was that title.

@Paris2023
@JoanOfAllTrades

In his state it wasn’t that weird. Funnily enough she was Jerry Lee Lewis’s second wife. He married his first wife when he was 16 lol.

He also had multiple other wives and mistresses who weren’t super young or even younger than him so I don’t think it’s fair to call him a pedophile, it was just normalised to him as it has been to a lot of people through history.

Absolutely agree, hence I did not call him a paedophile!

I was just a bit shocked that some people didn’t know about his marriage to his cousin. You know what it’s like when you think everyone just knows but it turns out not lol

JettyJoan50 · 29/10/2022 06:12

@JoanOfAllTrades

I mean a lot of people probably don’t even know who he is if they’re young. Or even if they’re older not everyone is going to know much about him aside from him being the piano guy who sand great balls of fire

Try “In the summertime” by Mungo Jerry!

Apparently if her daddy is rich, take her out for a meal, if her daddy is poor, just do what you feel!

It really is classic thinking! Things were different then, the thinking was different, especially around sex.

Longtimelurkerfinallyposts · 29/10/2022 06:17

I hate to break it to you all, but Myra might not even have been 13 yet when they married, according to this 1993 interview with Aspel:

"well she was 12 when i married her but she turned 13 about 3 days later"

It might be that he was confused about the dates, as according to Wikipedia their wedding was in December 1957, 5 months after her 13th birthday, but they married again in June 1958, about a month before her 14th birthday - after he'd finalized his divorce to Wife number 2, Jane Mitcham. It also says that Jerry was the cousin of Myra's dad, Jay, and had moved in with him and his family in 1956. Yuk.

I read somewhere else that she still believed in Santa Claus at the time.

Meant to continue-

In 1945 my Mum was 13. In the time leading up to the D Day landings her Dad got chummy with 3 American GI's. They came for dinner a few times.

One of them was from Tennessee, about 20. After a couple of visits he told Grandad that he was really taken with my mum and would "sure like to marry her".

When GD (aghast) spluttered that she was only 13 the GI said that's the age they get married back home..... I presume he was from the sticks.

Not true. The law in Tennessee is currently 16 years minimum age with parental consent. 18 without. It used to be 15. Never 13.

Interestingly enough, New Hampshire and Massachusetts currently have the lowest age for marriage at 13 and 12. Hardly “the sticks”. Kentucky, West Virginia, and Louisiana (which are more likely to be considered “the sticks”) require you to be 18.

But, cool story, bro.

In 2 of the 50 states. New Hampshire and Massachusetts. Many more require you to be older than you can be married in the UK.

This is very true! And what a shame that his life has been reduced to “he married his 13 y.o second cousin”.

As I posted previously, Bill Wyman was nearly 50 I think when he started having sex with 13 y.o. Mandy Smith with her mother’s consent and approval!

I was referring to when the tabloids in UK picked it up again! I can’t remember the exact date (damn this getting old, your memory just gets filled with so much!) but it was a thing in the second half of the 70’s. I just wish I could remember why now!

Bit nasty isn't it? Legal in some states though. (As horrific as it is!)

Didn't R Kelly marry Aaliyah when she was 15 and he was nearly 30?! And that wasn't the dark ages, that was the mid 1990s!

Yes and R Kelly also allegedly contributed to her death!

He’s a disgusting piece of work for sure!

And Pricilla was 14 when Elvis married her, child brides must have been en vogue then. Sickening

Rubbish

Melanie Griffith was 14 when she moved in with Don Johnson, he was 22. The photos of them together then are disturbing, she’s just a little girl!!

That's absolutely disgusting. What is wrong with people that they would want to marry children?! Fucking wrong

WahineToa · 29/10/2022 07:01

There’s been several women who say they were 14, 15 & 16, different women and different times, who slept with an older David Bowie, he was in his 20’s and even with one, in his 40’s

ivykaty44 · 29/10/2022 07:12

Have they changed the legal age for marriage now?

different states in USA have different legal ages for marriage Here

uk the legal age for marriage was changed in 1928 from 12 for females and 14 for-males to 16

IhearyouClemFandango · 29/10/2022 07:46

That's not all he got up to looking at that gospel that is Wiki. Amazing he was still feted really.

Their marriage was the result of a "relationship" that started while he stayed with their family. Cute way of saying abuse I guess.

Paris2023 · 29/10/2022 07:46

Sorry folks - I went to sleep! Just catching up. What is it with men and wanting to marry such young girls? It’s like their fame lets them get away with it but it’s the commonality of it that is frightening.
