I read an article on BBC a few years ago, it was about states in the USA were there is no age limit for marriage and lots of men marrying children. Can’t remember which states now but most were in the south. Some politicians in Washington were trying to put a stop to it.

Underage marriage was not even surprising in certain US states then, it was very common, in some places it still is. I read an article not that long ago, might have been in the old Independent weekend magazine, about young teen couples being encouraged to marry as an alternative to going to hell for pre marital sex in the deeply religious deep south. There were interviews with couples between 13 and 16. I agree it isnt right but in JLL case, he may not have realised that this wasnt a "thing that is ok" the world over.

In 'honour cultures', there is often an acceptance that where sex occurs without marriage, getting married limits the damage to the girl's family. The lack of legislation to ensure the brides age or consent enables parents and relatives to resolve matters to their satisfaction. The children rarely get a say in the matter.

To be fair, my husband could be my third cousin and I wouldn't have a clue- I barely know the names of my great grandparents, let alone their siblings grand children!

Erm, no. I already pointed this out in an earlier post - it caused outcry and scandal publicly at the time. It wasn’t considered appropriate for a man in his twenties to marry a little girl even then. That’s why the newspapers referred to her as a ‘child bride’ and him as a ‘baby snatcher.’ That’s why he met with hostility and had to cancel part of his tour etc.

Some sources claim that Myra might even been 12 when he shacked up with her. Two of his wives died in strange circumstances. One drowned in her pool soon after her divorce. The other 'officially' died from an edema but there was blood spotted on his clothing but it was all ignored and hushed up. He was an abusive, nasty man.

At least, in his case it had consequences. He was set to become one of the largest Rockabilly stars, seriously rivalling Elvis, after his initial recording success but the scandal over his underage wife did actually kill his career for quite a while and he was dropped by the Sun label. He was totally broke then. He eventually moved over to Country Music where he had more moderate success after appearing to be contrite. He only just got inducted to the Country Music Hall of Fame a couple of years ago.
