Does your vomit bowl have an alternative use?

I'm clearing out my mums house, and I've found the glow in the dark Halloween pumpkin bowl that was dragged out every bug to be used as a vom bowl.

I always thought at Halloween the sweets that went in the big glow in the dark pumpkin bowl went into another one that we just didn't see?

Nope. I asked my dad. They just disinfected the vomit bowl a few times and stuck halloween sweets in it. I've eaten popcorn from that bowl!!

What the fuck? I feel so violated!!

My vomit bowl doubles as the toilet. If I'm honest, it gets used as a toilet daily, and as a vomit bowl very rarely.

KangarooKenny · 27/10/2022 21:52

When I was a kid the metal bowl that was my DM’s cleaning bowl, and she cleaned the whole house using it, was also the vomit bowl. At least it regularly had bleach in when she was cleaning.

dailymailsdrugsrunner · 27/10/2022 21:52

Ours is a Jacob's crackers tub from a few years ago. Like @Fluffluff I also had a fpies-er. You'd find out very quickly if you had given him something he shouldn't have. He's grown out of it now but still has a very low tolerance to being sick, especially if he is unwell.

Even though my kids are well beyond needing a potty now I still have one of those travel potties that uses disposable absorbent bags in the car. Doubles up as a fab sick bowl- DS I'm looking at you here.

postcardpuffin · 27/10/2022 21:53

We have a washing up bowl for it now, after I balked at DP using a stainless steel cake mixing bowl. The sick bowl doubles up for catching leaks.

My parents had a round bright orange 1970s washing up bowl as the sick bowl when I was a kid. For years and years, well into adulthood, I associated the colour orange with feeling violently nauseous. Still feel a bit queasy at the sight of it tbh…

Pixiedust1234 · 27/10/2022 21:53

Oh dear. I was thinking how awesome to have a glow in the dark sick bowl...and then you spoilt it 😱

We have one very old sick bowl and it lives under the bath with the very old bath scales behind its own door panel. Never use it for anything else, not even to give the plants a soak (they have their own special bowl).

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 27/10/2022 21:54

Our vom bowl has XXX NOT TO BE USED FOR FOOD XXX NOT TO BE USED FOR FOOD XXX written around the inside in sharpie just in case anyone mistakes it for a different bowl.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 27/10/2022 21:55

I have plastic bins in every bedroom that can double as a sick bucket.

DuringDinnerMints · 27/10/2022 21:23

When I was a kid it doubled as the cake mixing bowl. Didn't realise until I was an adult.

The one from my childhood was too @DuringDinnerMints ! 😂 As an adult I've found there's a decent hidden section of society who had the same set up growing up. (At this point I will neither confirm or deny whether I have ever used our mixing bowl as a sick bowl now that I'm a mother myself). 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

AltheaVestr1t · 27/10/2022 21:58

We usually use a bin upstairs, but I'm not above using a pan/mixing bowl/whatever comes to hand in an emergency. If it's sterilised, I don't see the issue!

NumberTheory · 27/10/2022 22:01

We don’t have a specific sick bowl. We use whichever container is suitable and convenient. Most often it’s a bucket of some kind, but we have used a saucepan and a cake mixing bowl. After, it gets well washed and put back to it’s original purpose.

But it also is almost always precautionary, I think my kids have thrown up a total of 4 times in their lives. And twice there was no time to get the sick bowl.

Ha ha same here. It’s a rumour

onmywayamarillo · 27/10/2022 22:02

No I wouldn't ever use a cake bowl or and food use bowl for the sick bowl 😱

Mummummummumyyyyy · 27/10/2022 22:03

FangsForTheMemory · 27/10/2022 21:27

I have very large stainless steel bowl that I use for my Christmas cakes and also on occasion for vomming. It’s sterilised I’m the dishwasher in between times.

Same here until my found out and binned it! She was outraged, I was like ‘what?’ I’d it’s sterilised and it’s stainless steel it’s clean right??

Waveacrossabay · 27/10/2022 22:03

@NoWeaponsOnTheTable I like that! Quick get the broom!

Big cast iron pan, which I also use for cooking.

Badnewsoracle · 27/10/2022 22:05

Yes. We don't have a designated sick bowl, just use the most appropriate receptacle for the occasion and it then goes back to being in normal use once washed. Most often we use the small plastic IKEA bin, but I've used mixing bowls, washing up bowls, measuring jugs etc.

MayFlower22 · 27/10/2022 22:05

It was used as a toilet ( just wee) when the actual toilet was broken. So still bodily fluids 😁

23Elfie · 27/10/2022 22:05

Ours was a very old Mothercare stool thing for kids to stand on at the sink - flip it over and voilà one very deep sick bowl! Lasted a good 25 years that thing 🤣🤣

Also learned on a trip to Falaraki aged 20 that when the toilet and sink are in use for puke a saucepan also serves well...

WellTidy · 27/10/2022 22:05

Ours is the washing up bowl from their utility room sink. Also used to put dirty clothes on their way to the washing machine, and occasionally to soak period pants!

PinkiOcelot · 27/10/2022 22:06

We haven’t got a vomiting bowl. I tend to just puke down the loo.

DappledThings · 27/10/2022 22:06

People have specific vomit bowls? This is another brand new insight into the lives of others from MN.

Vomiting has never been so frequent an event in my life I've needed something set to catch it. DC have thrown up about twice each I think. Either made it to the toilet or it was so sudden it was on the floor.

Allmouthnoaction · 27/10/2022 22:07

At my parents house it was the washing up basin 🤪

inthemornin · 27/10/2022 22:07

Ours is the cake mix/meatloaf mix bowl. Not often sick but we do use that when we are (just me and daughter in the house) but it's in the dishwasher so sterilised. It's honestly not something I've ever thought about. However, I think my mum had a separate bowl just for vomiting growing up. It's not something I would advertise to people if they were over for dinner 🤣 but it's sterilised so won't hurt anyone.

MayFlower22 · 27/10/2022 22:07

It's a fepbtstions tub.
