Does your vomit bowl have an alternative use?

Waveacrossabay · 27/10/2022 21:20

I'm clearing out my mums house, and I've found the glow in the dark Halloween pumpkin bowl that was dragged out every bug to be used as a vom bowl.

I always thought at Halloween the sweets that went in the big glow in the dark pumpkin bowl went into another one that we just didn't see?

Nope. I asked my dad. They just disinfected the vomit bowl a few times and stuck halloween sweets in it. I've eaten popcorn from that bowl!!

What the fuck? I feel so violated!!

Growing up, ours was the old nappy bucket with a squirt of dettol in the bottom. The smell of dettol is enough to make me heave.

Not sure where ours has gone. Have given the big mixing bowl on occasions but has never been used

AriettyHomily · 27/10/2022 22:39

The used to be salad bowl, not anymore 🤮

Tuilpmouse · 27/10/2022 22:40

The cake mix bowl.

Do people who are 🤮 at the thought of this not wash and disinfect their bowl after "use"?

Scotabroad24 · 27/10/2022 22:40

We had a plastic kiddie step type thing in the bathroom as kids, usually used to reach the sink. It was flipped upside down when we had sick bugs and used as the sick bowl!
Recently bought one for ds from IKEA, however this one has legs and a gap between the step itself and the floor so we won't be using it to vomit into in our house Grin

Pandorapitstop · 27/10/2022 21:30

Why is everyone vomiting so frequently that they need special receptacles to be earmarked for the purpose?

This. I can't remember the last time anyone in my house was sick (I have a 9 and 11 year old). We're just not a very vomitty family I suppose.

Dreamingcats · 27/10/2022 22:40

How often do most people throw up?!?

We don't have a vomit bowl. Last time husband and I vomited (norovirus) we just used the toilet. I don't remember vomiting anywhere in my childhood home except the toilet.

If I had HG or something and needed something near my at all times, I'd use either an old washing up bowl I use for bathroom cleaning products, or a pyrex I could clean in the dishwasher. No issues reusing it if it's been cleaned.

Pythonesque · 27/10/2022 22:43

I'm another who has to think hard to work out what gets used here. We've a couple of cleaning bowls that have probably been first choice - but I could probably count on the fingers of one hand how often they've been used, including for nausea / might vomit episodes. Two kids just about grown up now.

Nat6999 · 27/10/2022 22:49

We use the bathroom bin, it always has a carrier bag liner so it can be whipped out in emergencies.

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 27/10/2022 22:50

I have given up scrolling, I am shocked, has no one got a toilet bowl and who is sick enough they need a permanent bowl solution?

ImTheOnlyUpsyOne · 27/10/2022 22:51

Communionmom · 27/10/2022 21:23

Mine is a washing up bowl that I use to hold used cleaning cloths until I wash them! (For some reason I don’t like to put them in a wash with clothes in case they bleach them or something!)

Also used to clean stones or shells collected on walks etc.

Definitely don’t use it to eat from!

Snap...its the dirty dishcloth bowl. But DS had a bug this week and all the dirty dishcloths had nowhere to go...so may need a rethink. It get disinfected after use anyway 😂

Isithotinhere · 27/10/2022 22:52

I used to use any bowl (and did bleach them afterwards!) but switched to plastic bags a few years ago - no cleaning up, just dump in the bin, so so much easier. If there's time I line the bag with toilet paper/kitchen roll to reduce the yuck factor.

SirenSays · 27/10/2022 22:52

No no no. Using sick bowls for food 🤢🤮 this is why you can't eat at everybody's house.
No one in my family has ever had a sick bowl, just do it in the loo and flush.

poweredbyplants · 27/10/2022 22:53

Sick bowl doubles as a bowl for soaking stained Terry cloths in napisan... I think that's acceptable tbh.

Dogtooth · 27/10/2022 22:54

We use IKEA waste bins that are basically buckets. Tip rubbish into another bin and spew away. We have enough to have one each, I'm always afraid of a sickness emergency where we're all spewing or have diarrhoea at once!

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/10/2022 22:54

Mine doubles as the bathroom floor washing bowl. As the bathroom at one time hosted eight of us including three males, two of them teenagers, its seen so many chemicals and bottles of bleach it is probably more a danger to life now than it ever has been after its been puked into!

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/10/2022 22:56

Although over the years I have caught sick in my hands, the fruit bowl and my handbag. All of which survived a good thorough washing and didnt start the plague so I cant get too worked up about a panicked parent grabbing a food recepticle, using that and then disinfecting it for its original use. If sick was so fatal the human race would have died out eons ago.

Usually used for children or in my situation if you're pregnant and share 2 bathrooms between 7 people.

AlwaysLatte · 27/10/2022 22:59

Nope we have a designated sick bowl (a small camping sized washing up bowl). Although I'm sure you could get every last germ off quite easily I'd still feel 🤮 using it for anything else!

megletthesecond · 27/10/2022 23:03

This is what ice cream tubs are for. Always have a few stashed away to be binned after each illness.

mommybear1 · 27/10/2022 23:04

I remember we had two - one was an old yellow massive bucket thing which was only used for sick. One was a potty my Mom repurposed as a sick bowl / soak bowl for stained clothes. We have recently moved to a plastic jug for our sick needs it is only used for vomit 🤮. Surprisingly handy 😉 for car journeys 😬

Ihatemyroad · 27/10/2022 23:04

I’ve used my cake mixing bowl, glass fruit bowl, trick or treat sweet buckets..... I have 3 young children and last time we all had a sick bug at the same time. No bowl/buckets was off limits!

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/10/2022 23:04

As for "who is so sick they need a bowl"

Well me....when I had noro so bad I was put on a drip. Before I went in then DH basically wedged every single towel and sheet around my arse to create a temporary toilet while I threw up over the the side of the bed into the bowl and simutaneously shit myself.

Happy days!

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 27/10/2022 23:06

Meh.

The germophobes on MN a quite an unhealthy breed.

Changechangychange · 27/10/2022 23:06

Windbeneathmybingowings · 27/10/2022 21:25

Mine is the soak the whites bowl

Same - I reckon OxiClean probably kills off most vomit bugs.

Also how much do you guys all vomit? It’s maybe once every 5 years in this house, we don’t really need a special bowl.
