Does your vomit bowl have an alternative use?

I'm clearing out my mums house, and I've found the glow in the dark Halloween pumpkin bowl that was dragged out every bug to be used as a vom bowl.

I always thought at Halloween the sweets that went in the big glow in the dark pumpkin bowl went into another one that we just didn't see?

Nope. I asked my dad. They just disinfected the vomit bowl a few times and stuck halloween sweets in it. I've eaten popcorn from that bowl!!

What the fuck? I feel so violated!!

Mine is a washing up bowl that is only ever used for things like soaking dishcloths in bleach.

We have a collapsible one too, can't remember where we got it from but it slides easily under the bed. Not because we're sick a lot, it's more a "just in case".

Mostly we get to the loo in time but maybe the time will come when someone is ill and unable to get out of bed let alone race to the loo. Plus there is the risk that someone will need to dispel diarrhoea and need to vomit at the same time. AND that we currently have one loo upstairs and the other accessible only from outside.

We also have a "mucky jug" for containing radiator water and collecting drips under the sink where there's a leak.

Neither of these items get used for food use, even if they get thoroughly cleaned afterwards they are not expected to diversify! They know their roles.

We used to use our vomit bowl for cooking and such until my eldest daughter pointed out it was disgusting

We had a washing up bowl for that purpose; I never use a washing up bowl in the sink, so ours was mainly used for cleaning paintbrushes and steeping rollers in temporarily.

For some reason the dc rechristened it (and vomming) as "limpo," so it was known as the Limpo Bowl usually in hushed tones

These days it's usually the Manky Jug from under the bathroom sink, which is used for dirty tasks. The old limpo bowl has now vanished, so we have to clean paintbrushes out in the sink.

The sick bowl of my childhood was a pale blue oval washing up bowl, the memory of it makes me feel slightly nauseous...

@bloodynamechangethe3rd When someone is feeling increasingly nauseous and it looks like a puke is on the cards, does the cry go up "Get DES!" ("And hurry!")

Normally it's "oh god where's DES?! Fetch him, get him, oh bloody hell why did you use DES to wash the car?!"

TheNoodlesIncident · 31/10/2022 12:09

DES is clearly an all-rounder... 😆

I have never had a vom bowl but sounds like a normal thing!?

Meggie2008 · 31/10/2022 12:26

I'm absolutely petrified of being sick, and have only been sick twice in my adult life. Once I was staying at my parents, tried to make the toilet, didn't quite get there, barfed on the bathroom floor and my poor mum had to clean it up because I was traumatised,. Second time it was the trusty mop bucket.

As a kid it was an old red basin that the cleaning products lived in

SlouchingTowardsBethlehemAgain · 31/10/2022 12:42

Salad bowl.

MrsDThomas · 31/10/2022 12:46

Can’t recall a bowl so it must have been a bucket or something with a bag in it

but i do recall the sick blanket. Very 70’s and the type of material that caught on fingernails. I instantly felt better and comforted when it came out

LeFeu · 31/10/2022 12:48

Nope we have a particular old bowl that lives in the airing cupboard that is for puke only. My kids tend to respond to most types of viruses by throwing up even if they don’t have a stomach bug per se so it does get the use and there’s no way I’d use it for food after, that’s rough!

LeFeu · 31/10/2022 12:49

I do also remember puking in an ice cream tub in the car which could then have the lid put on….
