Wouldn’t it be great if we could all settle the fuck down now

…and give this government a chance to sort out this huge bastard mess

We are where we are. Nothing can change it. We are not having a general election for at least 2 years. Yes, there have been some monumental fuck ups whipped up by the media so that we don’t know our arse from our elbow

It’s a sound bite, yes but it’s true that what we need now is stability

I am not a Tory by nature. I have been appalled by many things over the last few months and years.

We are on our knees is so many ways. Constant agitation and chaos just prolongs it. There is no credible opposition in my view.

Bring it on 😊

the second the tories can offer stability then you’d have a point

Pixiedust1234 · 24/10/2022 17:12

I agree with you. We need to get balanced enough to see what needs to be dealt with as a priority, and what can wait a little. And more importantly, how to fund it.

midgetastic · 24/10/2022 17:12

There is more credibility in the opposition than in the government even if you doubt how much

I mean the opposition haven't managed to string together a series of disasters - it was pretty incomprehensible what this government have achieved - logic dictates that there are very few such complete incompetents in the world ergo the opposition is likely to be better

Timeforabiscuit · 24/10/2022 17:14

@AnyFucker I respect you hugely, but honestly, a different name on the boat makes sod all difference. Its the SAME government, at a stretch its a different leadership, but I can't see the in fighting stopping when you have MPs all desperate for their own seats and internal battle lines hastily drawn and redrawn, the only positive is the speed at which they've got Sunac in place.

I don't think stability is something this government has in its gift to bestow.

Fairislefandango · 24/10/2022 17:15

Yep, YANBU. Sunak seems like the least worst option in the circumstances. At least he doesn't give the impression of being an utterly incompetent, bumbling dimwit. I wouldn't vote Tory, but atm I wouldn't vote for anyone else either. I'll just have to hope that by the time there's a GE, one of the parties will be in a fit state for me to change my mind.

HiveBee · 24/10/2022 17:15

They have had the chance. Settle down is the absolute last thing we should do at this stage.

minipie · 24/10/2022 17:16

I’m reluctantly with you. In theory I’d like nothing more than to see this pack of bastards booted out ignominiously. In practice however: a) as you say, it’s not going to happen, so 2 years of crying “election now” will be distracting and just push the govt towards populist politics, rather than helpful; b) I think a couple of years might provide a chance for a proper alternative party to form - whether that’s an improved Labour, Lib Dem (do they still exist?) or a new party.

illiterato · 24/10/2022 17:16

Yeah- I’ve come full circle on this and inclined to agree with you @AnyFucker. I like KS. I think he’s a decent man. I don’t think he has control of the party and labour is too broad a church to be effective IMO. They get in, they’ll tear themselves apart in weeks. By contrast I’m not a massive Rishi fan especially over the whole non dom thing, but I think he’s a pragmatist rather than driven by ideology and I can live with it.

This. All day long. The anger Johnson and Truss have stirred up will continue for a long, long time. The damage the pair of them have done is irreparable.

the80sweregreat · 24/10/2022 17:17

I agree that we need to give him a chance and I say this as someone who doesn't vote conservative.
I'd love a GE , but as that isn't looking likely, it's best to try and make the best of it.
It's not perfect though

What a strange way to start a post.

It's OK to have a differing opinion without having to state that you do or don't respect someone.

sashagabadon · 24/10/2022 17:20

Completely and utterly agree. From being a news junkie I now can’t bear to listen to any of the “ commentators “ and their generally rubbish and biased opinions so I switch it all off and generally listen to history podcasts or audiobooks these days. So much nicer!
It’s all just copy to most journalists. They all need content for their podcasts and sub stacks now however and are addicted to likes on their Twitter feeds however and being top of the podcast charts and so artificially create the drama to drive people to listen, read etc. it’s all just theatre imo.

SimonaRazowska · 24/10/2022 17:20

I think the long term damage for the Tories will be huge

It'll be a Labour landslide in 2 yrs, like in 97

Nothing they can do. They fucked it up, then truss and kwarteng fucked it up even bigger

It's beyond redemption

LaurieFairyCake · 24/10/2022 17:21

They are TERRIFYINGLY unstable

I agree. I think the Conservatives will be wary now, having seen just how far the cult of personality / ERG were prepared to take us down the plughole.
It’s going to be tough, but it would be tough under Labour too.

Have a long memory, vote how you feel is appropriate when the next GE comes along.

I think that is complete and utter fantasy. Most of my colleagues at work like Sunak, they liked Boris too and they mostly think Keir is a wally.
i can’t see what Keir could do between now and 2024 to change their minds?

CuriousCatfish · 24/10/2022 17:27

The Tories have had too many chances and fucked up too many times. The sooner the self serving twats are out of power the better.

StoneofDestiny · 24/10/2022 17:28

😂yeh - because we've had such credible government these last 12 years😂😂

Timeforabiscuit · 24/10/2022 17:30

My mil has an equal vote to me, and she was gutted Boris wasn't returning.

I asked what difference she thought Boris would make.

"Well he's got to sort the mortgage rate out!" - he can't, that's the market, and the conservatives are better off this way anyway.

"Well, food is through the roof, and the shelves in aldi are half empty! Butter has doubled!" - Yes, there's a war in Ukraine, price of cattle feed has gone up, so butter and milk has gone up. Europe will get first pick of what's grown and made in the EU, so it's not a surprise we're struggling.

"But we're part of Europe!" No we're not, you voted for brexit!

"Yeah, but that was just for immigration, I didn't think it meant everything else"

DH thought I did very well to be civil.

the80sweregreat · 24/10/2022 17:32

Most people i know are conservatives and are not keen on Kier Starmer
It's not my point of view , but you'd be surprised how many are wary of Labour

Threadkillacilla · 24/10/2022 17:32

Too many people suffer with Tory government, I'm not saying Labour are great, far from it but we can't keep watching while our government grids folk in to dust.

I don't like the suggestion that we need to settle down as if this is the public fault.

Stable government stems from stable & united political parties.

I'm not taking responsibility for the divisions within the Conservatives.
