Wouldn’t it be great if we could all settle the fuck down now

…and give this government a chance to sort out this huge bastard mess

We are where we are. Nothing can change it. We are not having a general election for at least 2 years. Yes, there have been some monumental fuck ups whipped up by the media so that we don’t know our arse from our elbow

It’s a sound bite, yes but it’s true that what we need now is stability

I am not a Tory by nature. I have been appalled by many things over the last few months and years.

We are on our knees is so many ways. Constant agitation and chaos just prolongs it. There is no credible opposition in my view.

Yeah- I’ve come full circle on this and inclined to agree with you @AnyFucker. I like KS. I think he’s a decent man. I don’t think he has control of the party and labour is too broad a church to be effective IMO. They get in, they’ll tear themselves apart in weeks. By contrast I’m not a massive Rishi fan especially over the whole non dom thing, but I think he’s a pragmatist rather than driven by ideology and I can live with it.

You think the major concern in British politics is that the Labour party will tear itself apart in office. The Labour Party? Do you not watch the news?

DogInATent · 24/10/2022 17:53

The country peaked in 2012, started a slow decline, and then jumped off a cliff in 2016. I have a great deal of difficulty "getting behind" the present government when it's done so much damage to me personally over the last 12 years. It's not as if it's going to get any rest from within its own ranks either - Boris's Fan Club, the ERG, and whatever faction decides now is the time to emerge, are all going to be sniping him from the back benches.

We haven't got the A team on the pitch from any of the major parties at the moment. It feels like the majority of the adults in the room left in the post-Brexit Purge Of The Moderates that both parties went through (for admittedly different reasons).

I'd like to see a GE rather than have the Tories keep playing spin the bottle until they can get a leader they agree on. But I fear a Tory electoral wipe out and a Labour landslide would only be a little better, and only for as long as it took the various Judean Fronts to collapse them into an ungodly mess.

Umbrellabee · 24/10/2022 17:54

This would be a better message to the tory MPs, they need to settle down themselves first. They are a fractured party, doesn’t matter who is in charge. All the arguing and fighting and pettiness. Everyone else will settle down when they are conducting themselves in an appropriate manner.

FlossMeg · 24/10/2022 17:55

No I’m sorry I don’t agree with you. This government has been in power for some time now and we haven’t had ANY kind of stability for the best part of 8 years.

It gets increasingly worse and I want a general election.

PerfectlyPreservedQuagaarWarrior · 24/10/2022 17:55

It’s a sound bite, yes but it’s true that what we need now is stability

Yes. However, that doesn't mean the Tories are now in a position to offer it. If we knew that they were, you'd have a point.

But Sunak is inheriting a hugely divided party who are polling appallingly, and who thanks to the extreme right wing haven't actually been able to unite behind a PM whilst in government for any sustained period for 30 years. 2010-15 is different because the fact that they were in coalition neutered the loons somewhat. There's no reason to suppose they're suddenly going to fall in line.

To that end, your framing of this issue is wrong. Unless by 'we all' you just mean any Conservative MPs who might be reading. Because if Rishi isn't able to hold it together and govern, it'll be because of them. Not because those of us ordinary people who are correctly identifying a shitshow as a shitshow.

YABU.

Sistanotcista · 24/10/2022 17:56

@Readaboutyourself - very good! 😀😀

Blossomtoes · 24/10/2022 17:56

sashagabadon · 24/10/2022 17:23

I think that is complete and utter fantasy. Most of my colleagues at work like Sunak, they liked Boris too and they mostly think Keir is a wally.
i can’t see what Keir could do between now and 2024 to change their minds?

Fortunately the polls indicate that it’s far from fantasy. Sorry you work with blind, out of touch idiots, it must be tough.

ElspethTascioni · 24/10/2022 17:56

Nah

Loics · 24/10/2022 17:58

Nope, happy with a little more instability while the Tories are kicked out of power if it meant we would be rid of them.

Rafting2022 · 24/10/2022 17:58

What a depressing thread - we need more people need to be more angry.

the80sweregreat · 24/10/2022 17:59

I'm done with being angry
I understand why people are.

gwenneh · 24/10/2022 17:59

I'm sure it would be great if we all just "settled down" and accepted the rest of the shit sandwich we're already swallowing.

I don't think I will, though.

Cuck00soup · 24/10/2022 17:59

I want to agree with you. My head says it's the right thing to do for now. My heart isn't feeling it though.

It's like expecting an abusive partner to change.

BasiliskStare · 24/10/2022 18:00

@Anyfucker - I agree . & I am cross with what has happened over the last few weeks - but I do feel like saying - Shall we all calm down now and use our inside voices & just think how we can not spoil things for everyone. ( can you tell I missing having v small children ) 😁

Spudina · 24/10/2022 18:00

I can’t get behind this party ran by absolutely incompetent fuckwits. Rishi was chancellor and the rich got richer whilst the poor got poorer. But it’s the others I really worried about. JRM and TC, health secretary are actually dangerous. She wants to do away with antibiotic prescribing guidance which is the only thing standing between us and total antibiotic resistance. The woman’s a loon.

AnyFucker · 24/10/2022 18:02

they need to settle down themselves first

oh yes, it starts them. And the fucking media.

OP posts:
skippy67 · 24/10/2022 18:03

Are you seriously saying this government is credible??
Bloody hell. And no, I won't be getting behind them. Bunch of lying self serving hypocrites.

stuntbubbles · 24/10/2022 18:04

Settle down, proles. Just let the rich carry on destroying your lives. And in fact it’s not the government’s fault: it’s yours, prole, for agitating.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/10/2022 18:04

the80sweregreat · 24/10/2022 17:32

Most people i know are conservatives and are not keen on Kier Starmer
It's not my point of view , but you'd be surprised how many are wary of Labour

Most people l know are Labour and are not keen on any Tory leader….

It IS my point of view but many l know think the Tories are shite.

LikeAStar1994 · 24/10/2022 18:05

Exactly. Well said! Just wish people would shut up about it.

Bretonbear · 24/10/2022 18:05

CuriousCatfish · 24/10/2022 17:27

The Tories have had too many chances and fucked up too many times. The sooner the self serving twats are out of power the better.

This 👆

AnyFucker · 24/10/2022 17:36

Don’t get me wrong. I am angry, so very angry. Truss was a monumental mistake that has cost the country greatly. It started with Brexit and has gone downhill since. I voted to remain and I am incandescent at how it has fucked us up.

Then Covid, don’t get me started on that but no government could have got that right.

Energy crisis. Climate change.

Now a global downturn and we have handled it appallingly so far.

Give us all a chance, I say. We have to get behind what we have.

I agree

midgetastic · 24/10/2022 18:08

No we don't

Why should I be happy that they can mess things up even more ?

BanditoShipman · 24/10/2022 18:09

Withdrawn at poster's request.

Embarrassed for you 🙄

Quitelikeit · 24/10/2022 18:09

I’m with you.

I do not agree with posters who are demanding a general election because there is no one good enough to take over.

it is the media who keep stirring and stirring - they will have a massive hand in whether Rishi gets a decent run at this
