To want a PM who is actually going to address Covid?

We all know whoever wins, they will not speak about covid and the havoc it is causing on society still. Cases rising, hospitals bringing back social distancing, deaths going up. Measures such as mask wearing on public transport should have never ended.

OP posts:
UnmentionedElephantDildo · 23/10/2022 12:17

We need Evusheld

We need to prevent large peaks - people don't seem to care about lives any more (which is such an indictment), but don't seem to get the economic impact of each wave of the disease.

And proper discussion of both health and economic impact of long covid seems to be almost entirely absent

Covid isn't over

There will be new variants that will mean previous immunity is largely evaded. But it cannot mutate to evade masks and ventilation.

Harebrain · 23/10/2022 12:17

🙄

SheilaSazs · 23/10/2022 12:17

Good God no, seek help for your own anxiety if you feel overwhelmed but don't impose it on the rest of us.

Well we cant afford any more lockdowns that's for sure. People have to act sensibly, get booster vaccines, stay at home if you feel unwell. Wear a mask if you think it helps.

gamerchick · 23/10/2022 12:21

I'm not going back to all that OP. If you're that obsessed with masks and SD then crack on with it. Stay in the house and have no life if you want. It's a no from me.

Bzzz · 23/10/2022 12:21

Any party that spoke of covid restrictions would loose significant votes, and rightly so. We cannot afford mote lockdowns. If you want to hibenate/wear a mask then do so but most the country don't. Furthermore, the majority of the country would not listen to any restrictions

Berrylina · 23/10/2022 12:22

Noviembre · 23/10/2022 12:02

I don't think any of them, in any party, are going to mention it again.

Hospitals are fucked because of staffing and funding. Covid's making it worse but it's not the cause.

I agree - these issues existed before. Covid just makes it significantly worse because you aren't allowed into the hospital for work if positive.
I am not quite sure how they would change things short of telling people to attend work if positive but well.

Another issue is Brexit. More than 44% of staff on the NHS are foreign. Brexit means Europeans who worked here before have gone home - at least quite a good number. If they have to get visas for their families to accompany them - the process and requirements are too complex, they don't get paid enough to satisfy visa requirements.

IR35 - Many who worked as self employed will be working elsewhere in Europe because IR35 effectively cut income by close to 50%. These are people who work 1-2 weeks a month so are not employed and do not have the same rights as employed people. Yet the Tories think it's fair to treat them as employed people for tax purposes but deny them the same rights. In any case - many have left and work in other countries, this is the same thing affecting truck drivers etc.
I also personally know many people in healthcare who just refuse to work many hours because of high taxes.

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 23/10/2022 12:22

No masks.... never again

Sorry but nope

MithrilCostsMore · 23/10/2022 12:23

Only on Mumsnet are there people banging on about covid still. In real life it's treated like Flu.

ThinkingForEveryone · 23/10/2022 12:24

Absolutely not, one way of guaranteeing you won't get my vote is mentioning more measures against bloody covid🙄

CaronPoivre · 23/10/2022 12:25

It's not about managing Covid per se. Its about ensuring that our healthcare system is revitalised and the damage wreaked by ten years of Tory cuts and Brexit is remedied.
Covid isn't disappearing and there will be future pandemics of other pathogens. Increasingly so, probably, but with a well resourced health and social care system, with a welcome for European staff and adequate beds per capita we'd be ab6to manage far better.

Sindonym · 23/10/2022 12:26

I think this thread demonstrates the problems OP. Unless it gets so bad that the increased rate of heart attacks/strokes etc starts to affect everyone then people will always crap on about masks and freedom. And see wanting to avoid that as ‘anxiety’.

Clearly the impact that pretending covid doesn’t exist has on those who are CEV doesn’t matter one jot to a large proportion of the country.

As I said earlier it is now political and tied up I. Libertarian crap, so there is no chance of any Party touching it.

sst1234 · 23/10/2022 12:27

OP, did you type this in March 2020 and then forgot to press post?

Or maybe you have deep rooted issues around Covid obsession and you are struggling to let go of being babied.

Or maybe you are bored and thought this would be a fun wind up.

thelobsterquadrille · 23/10/2022 12:27

What do you think they should be doing address it?

We already vaccines and a booster system and you can wear masks if you like.

Is the correct answer. 😆

TheyreOnlyNoodlesMichael · 23/10/2022 12:29

Oh don't be so bloody ridiculous. Put yourself into your own lockdown, wear as many masks as you want, but piss off trying to impose restrictions on anyone else for fear of a bloody virus.

sst1234 · 23/10/2022 12:29

MithrilCostsMore · 23/10/2022 12:23

Only on Mumsnet are there people banging on about covid still. In real life it's treated like Flu.

These zealots are clearly mentally unwell. They need help of some kind to let go of this hysteria and obsession.

balalake · 23/10/2022 12:32

I agree with the OP, but it is not going to happen. Remember one of the candidates is the man whose inactions cost 20,000 avoidable deaths or more, the others were in government with him.

I'd start with proper sick pay and isolation (or at least not going into a place of work) for those who have Covid 19.

Hbh17 · 23/10/2022 12:34

Spectacularly unreasonable! I think all politicians, from all parties, have now learned how much damage was caused by prolonged and unnecessary lockdowns, not to mention the resulting economic issues which are the reason why we are where we are now.
I don't really care who is PM, provided that they understand that there was a major over-reaction in 2020 and 2021.
The vaccination programme is still being funded, so just get up to date on your jabs and crack on. Covid is NOT a serious illness.

NeedAHoliday2021 · 23/10/2022 12:35

@PinkiOcelot where are you in the country? In the south west our hospital has reintroduced masks - it’s due to covid and flu outbreaks (more flu than we’ve seen in my 8 year career).

gogohmm · 23/10/2022 12:36

Address it how, there's nothing to address. Just like flu you can catch it and most recover fully

IndigoC · 23/10/2022 12:36

Almost 800 people died of Covid in the latest week (to 15th October) and that is no doubt an understatement given the fudging of cause of death these days. In my region hospitalisations recently reached a peak that was second only to the terrible Alpha wave in January 2021.

ilovesooty · 23/10/2022 12:36

I think appropriate sick pay so that people who are clearly symptomatic didn't have to attend work would be helpful.

It would be considerate if people who had symptoms took themselves out of social situations but not everyone does and no government can make them.

Topgub · 23/10/2022 12:38

@IndigoC

Died of or died with?

Admitted with or because of?
